I believe that Montgomery's essay is far more convincing than Minton's. In Montgomery's essay, you include a multitude of references studies for reliable organizations and websites. On the contrary, Minton's essay talks a lot about statistics but provides little sources and websites that show reliability. Montgomery's essay is more convincing to me because she is a mother, and makes me believe that my mother would want the same thing. She makes a lot of valid points about health studies and fatalities. She also does a great job in relating the United States to European countries which works very well. Europe is often compared to America in other circumstances, so why would the scenario turn out diff rent here? Montgomery did an effective
I chose not to use any of the prompts provided, but instead connect the article to what I learned in my sociology class lass quarter. In class we watched part one of film series of Unnatural causes, titled Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making us Sick "In Sickness and in Wealth". While reading the article this reminded me about the cases studied in the film to see whether wealth inequality contributes to making people sick. In the film they focused on the social determinants of health, wealth and education. In both the article and part one of the film Unnatural Causes they focused on three different individuals and how their health are affected by they choices they make and the access they have to care.
Q 1. The American colonies were divided into three distinct regions and these regions were different from each other in their origins, populations, economics and agriculture, religious makeup, and connection to England .write an essay comparing and contrasting the New England, middle, and southern colonies with specific examples.
Deborah Lee and Rosalyn Carson-Dewitt MD, a medical and scientific writer (Lee, Carson-Dewitt, 2016, p.2), worked together to write Point: Vaccines Save Lives, found on page two of “Point of view: Vaccines and health hazards” to discuss vaccines. Lee’s article used historical events, expert opinion, and comparison to make the argument that vaccines protect society. With people taking what they read on the internet at face value, it is more important than ever to be sure one knows the facts before making decisions. The authors attempted to clarify the subject to help parents make an informed decision. Did Lee and Carson-Dewitt effectively present evidence in an unbiased way to support the claim that vaccines save lives?
...tion, ethics and logic in "Guns, Sex and Education" is definitely superior to Janice Turner's appeal to primarily logic in "Should We Need a License to Be a Parent?" It is rather counterintuitive that Turner's reliance on solid facts, figures and statistics takes away from the strength of her argument in comparison with O'Meara's reliance on imagery, emotion and rapport with the audience. Though both are extremely well crafted essays, it is safe to say that at the end of the day, it is O'Meara's persuasive imagery that stays with the reader.
America, a land with shimmering soil where golden dust flew and a days rain of money could last you through eternity. Come, You Will make it in America. That was the common theme of those who would remove to America. It is the common hymn, the classic American rags-to-riches myth, and writers such as Benjamin Franklin and Frederick Douglass had successfully embraced it in their works.Franklin and Douglass are two writers who have quite symmetrical styles and imitative chronology of events in their life narratives.
To some, tricksters may only be thought of as weak figures from Native American or African American tales who are seeking an objective and find creative ways to outsmart their opponents. However, there are many accounts of people in American literature that can be compared to tricksters. Olaudah Equiano and Phillis Wheatley are two of these people. Both Equiano and Wheatley use their creative abilities in an effort to accomplish a unified goal: abolishment of slavery. In The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavas Vassa, the African, Written by Himself, Olaudah Equiano emulates a trickster because he is disadvantaged in comparison to his foes (slave owners), but ends up victorious. Equiano’s actions parallel that of
When we consider the education of our children in the United States, we must consider their health as a significant issue as it can positively or negatively impact a student’s education. It has generally been acknowledged that there is a great disparity in our country in the area of health care. Healthy People2010, a published report put out by the Health and Human Services Division of the Unites States Government (2000) has included as part of its Goals for 2010, to eliminate health disparities among different segments of the population. According to this report, health differences occur depending on a persons gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, rural locality, or sexual orientation. In this paper, I will mostly concentrate on racial and ethnic differences as well as socioeconomic differences. According to the Healthy People 2010 report, biological and genetic differences do not explain the health disparities experienced by non-White populations in the United States. Besides "complex interaction among genetic variations, environmental factors, and specific health behaviors," Health and Human Services says, "inequalities in income and education underlie many health disparities in the United States." Also, "population groups that suffer the worst health status are also those that have the highest poverty rates and least education." Health, United States (1998) reported that each increase of income or education increased the likelihood of being in good health. According to this report, those with less education tend to die younger than those with more education for all major causes of death including chronic diseases, communicable diseases and injuries. There are several factors that account for differences between socioeconomic and racial and ethnic groups. These factors include a lower sedentary life style, cigarette smoking and less likely to have health insurance coverage or receive preventive care among these groups.
Palin criticized the proposed limited on junk food in schools in Pennsylvania, which was suppose to help encourage parents to give their children healthy snacks. The governments proposal was poorly prepared based on the fact that private schools would not even be affected. I believe Warner uses this story of Palin because it grabs attention of the audience and emphasizes that the government has lack of knowledge of the obesity problem. In Warner’s discussion of the governments ideas of removing junk food, one controversial issue has been that the government lacks knowledge. On one hand, Warner argues Palin’s twitter account, uses uneducated language. On the other hand, she contends it should be an individual’s right to eat what they choose. Others even maintain that the government should do something about this unhealthy American lifestyle. My own view is that taking away cookies is wrong because Americans will continue to eat junk food at their own will. When the school doesn’t provide them, they can still get it elsewhere. As much as the government continues to stress eating healthy, people will still continue to make their own choices. Personal choices will always come first. I believe the government has the right to take responsibility to educate people about eating habits but that should be it. Parents should step up and change there attitudes as much as they can. This society relies on easy and fast meals. Ultimately, what is at stake is health and people must change attitudes towards fast food for healthy lifestyles to improve. It 'll take time and patience to get all Americans to change attitudes to living a some what healthy
He compares the healthcare programs of the U.S. with Canada, Cuba, and France and Moore makes it very clear that the United States is the only modern nation without some version of universal access to healthcare services. Where all other industrialized countries have addressed the issue and the financial challenges associated with it, the United States healthcare system has yet to iron out such problems because of the corrupt health care system itself. To support his claim, he paints the picture of greedy insurance companies denying experimental care to the patients and HMO’s not accepting new patients due to pre-existing conditions (these represent the stakeholders). Incidentally, Moore does rely on anecdotal evidence to prove that emergency waiting rooms in other countries are particularly efficient, and both doctors and patients alike are satisfied with socialized medicine. However, Michael Moore skips over other issues or does not even address issues at all. From what is documented in the film, it is hard to prove such theories that other country’s health care systems are more advanced than America. It is impossible to make sound conclusions about the true running of their systems. In a sense, Moore does not pleasure the actual health care system in those countries but
I found the problem with the argument of the article was there was no set argument that was clearly stated. If there was an argument in the article it was not clearly stated and I personally did not catch onto it. Altogether this was a well written article without a clear argument.
...ct, there is a much more pertinent question that no scientific study can answer. That question being whether parents have the rights to make choices for their children that involve the needs for the greater good of the community. With this subject in mind one can conclude that this debate will not disappear quickly, and solving such a pressing issue will arise new complications that will question the rights of American citizens.
The facts of tax burden in France and Britain are undeniable; nevertheless the amount of tax paid is not stated. In the USA people do not pay nearly as much tax as in France and Britain. As well as tax burden, life expectancy rates in the US are not actually revealed and yet they are compared with the other 3 countries. America supposedly has the lowest life expectancy out of all 4 countries and yet Cuba is virtually tied with the USA. The audience is persuaded to believe that 50 million Americans are without health insurance; this combines together citizens and non-citizens. The Americans who do have health care are said to be paying $7000 per person per year, whereas according to the World Health Organization health care costs $6100 per person per
To begin his juxtaposition he brought up the neighbors to the north, Canada, and how americans will pretend to live with a friend or family member who is a canadian citizen so they can get the treatment they need. He also brings up 18 month old Mychelle who was suffering from a 104 fever and was taken to the nearest hospital, where they refused to help her because they didn’t take her insurance. They rushed her to the nearest hospital that would treat her , but by the time the ambulance arrived Mychelle suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away. After tugging at our heart strings he introduces us to ZoÃ, who like Mychelle came down with a high fever and was rushed to the hospital where they immediately treated her, discovered she had a throat infection and finally gave her medication at no expense. The one difference between these two 18-month year old girls? Zoà and her mom live in France, a country with universal healthcare.Moore also anticipated objections, like the idea that people in America won’t want to be doctors because they would work for the government and it would pay less. Which Moore rebuttals with a statement from a Doctor from France who lives comfortably in a 3 story house with a beanz making over $204,351 a year. Here hes trying to prove that just becuase they work for the goveremnt doesn’t mean they won’t be paed
...There is much the United States can learn by analyzing the different health care systems around the world. There is clearly something wrong when a country as influential as the United States is not able to look after its own citizens. It is time to realize that the health care system in the United States is broken! The United States needs to look at its neighbors and friends in order to rebuild itself into the great, blooming country it once might have been. The United States needs to toss aside its pride and ask for help from countries like those of Great Britain.
Reading through the essay I felt that Bob Smietana the author was speaking as a reporter. Rather than offering his own opinion he throughout the essay presented opinions from both sides of the arguement.
