College is a big transition from high school, socially and academically. A students success will depend on how they adapt to the different environment. Marias and Eduardos adjusted to the college life differently, even though both stories end in success. The major differences were; Maria looked at college as a continuation of high school, whereas Eduardo viewed college as a completely different experience: they both had different study habits, and the environments in which they grew up varied drastically.
Maria went into college using the same formulas she had learned in highschool, whereas Eduardo made sure to differentiate the expectations between his high school work with college assignments. Maria believed that college was just a continuation
of high school, known as a mythical college. Failing to recognize that college is a dramatic change may lead some students struggling to maintain good grades. Eduardo for example did not approach his college assignments like he would have in highschool, rather he looked at what the professor was asking of him. He set a time out of his schedule for the assignment and unlike Maria his assignments got to the point and he received good grades. Maria and Eduardo had different studying techniques. For example, Maria believed that memorization was the key to success, therefore she spent an excessive amount of her time repeatedly reading content given to her. Although this strategy had worked for her in high school, it was earning her C’s in her college classes. On the other hand, Eduardo spent a reasonable amount of time on his assignments and figured out what the professor wanted from him, rather than relying on what he had learned in high school. Eduardo ended the term with a 4.0. The upbringing of Maria and Eduardo gave each of the students advantages and disadvantages. Eduardo attended a public high school in a poverty stricken neighborhood that sent a small percentage of students to higher education. On the other hand, Maria attended a private high school, which prepared many students for college. Studies have shown that students with a poor high school education often transition to college do better than those who attended high schools with outstanding credentials. After the first semester we see that Eduardo averaged a 4.0, whereas Maria averaged with a C. Maria and Eduardo went into college with different mindsets, study skills, and upbringings. The transition from high school to college can be difficult for many students, as there is such a difference socially and academically. Undergraduates will be faced with many new challenges, and will need to find internal motivators to keep them focused.
The first poem that I chose was by the poet Julia Alvarez titled “Queens, 1963” this told the story of a family that has moved into in Queens, NY. The writer and narrator of this story is from the Dominican Republic. One year has passed for the family to finally settle into the neighborhood. This time an African American family has moved right across the street. The young girl notices how her neighbors have not treated this family with kindness and respect. More police have been seen patrolling through the neighborhood. When reading this poem my initial thoughts were that “Queens, 1963” describes the American people's behavior towards foreigners and their reactions. Alvarez states, “Mr. Scott, the retired plumber, and his plump Midwestern wife, considered moving back home, where white and black got along by staying where they belonged.” (Alvarez, pp 952) It will take another year and another family that will move into their neighborhood, than once the African American family settles in another family will be placed under the same scrutiny.
Young Yunior has a crush on his older brother, Rafa’s, girlfriend in Nilda,by Junot Diaz. Running from an alcoholic mother, Nilda often spends the night in the brothers’ shared bedroom, unbeknownst to their unsuspecting mother. Forced to keep the mother from becoming suspicious, Rafa and Nilda engage in sexual intercourse while the infatuated Yunior is pretending to sleep in the same room. The conflict occurs as Yunior tries to reconcile the innocent girl he became infatuated with to the new Nilda she becomes through her promiscuous sexual explorations. The conflict resolves itself as Yunior becomes aware that Nilda’s sexual explorations have led her down a self-destructive path which has changed her both physically and emotionally.
Maria Teresa Mirabal, also known as Mate was born on October 15, 1935. She is the youngest out of all the Mirabal sisters and we mostly get to know her from her journal entries. Mate received her diary from Minerva on the day of her first communion. At school, people would make fun of her for having the diary and would steal it from her. Mate used to think differently about Trujillo as a little girl, she thought he was someone that everyone loved and should be respected. On Benefactor’s Day, she wanted to give Trujillo her best wishes, "I am taking these few minutes to wish El Jefe Happy Benefactor's Day with all my heart. I feel so lucky that we have him for a president." (37) Mate’s sister Minerva starts to get in trouble at school for leaving
In the essay “Achievement of Desire”, author Richard Rodriguez, describes the story of our common experience such as growing up, leaving home, receiving an education, and joining the world. As a child, Rodriguez lived the life of an average teenager raised in the stereotypical student coming from a working class family. With the exception, Rodriguez was always top of his class, and he always spent time reading books or studying rather than spending time with his family or friends. This approach makes Rodriguez stand out as an exceptional student, but with time he becomes an outsider at home and in school. Rodriguez describes himself as a “scholarship boy” meaning that because of the scholarships and grants that he was receiving to attend school; there was much more of an expectation for him to acquire the best grades and the highest scores. In Jennie Capo Crucet 's essay, “Taking My Parents To College,” Crucet describes her own experience as a freshman college student who was faced with many challenges that were unknown to her, as well as the cluelessness of what the beginning of her freshman year would look like. I felt like the biggest impression Crucet left on me while I was reading her essay, was the fact that I can relate to her idea of the unknown of college life. Although it is certain that Fidel Castro and Fulgencio Batista would not have been able to peacefully sit in the same room together, they are alike in more ways than either man would ever have liked to admit. When reviewing the effects they had on Cuban history, many similarities could be noted. At the very start of each man's political career, he overthrew his predecessor using some sort of militant force. In Batista's case, this was achieved by staging a coup with military backing. For Castro, he was a main figurehead in the Cuban Revolution who eventually emerged as Cuba's leader for many years to come. At the onset of both leader's career's as Cuba's leader, Batista and Castro were admired by the majority of the public, but they went on to establish dictatorships and suspended the constitution, thus were later disliked by many.
Throughout the length of schooling, students go through various changes. In their first year of school, children are required to make the transition from being at home for the entire day to being in school for a number of hours a day. These transition periods happen many times through the schooling years, but the most drastic changes occur during the transition from high school to college, where students weather numerous lifestyle changes. While each individual student goes on their own journey, certain themes remain common between different students. Studies are done to look at these themes identifying the numerous differences and similarities.
Moreover, Maria often disassociates herself from her actions and looks at her life in third-person. One example would be when she told Carter about her pregnancy and “and she wondered with distant interest just how long the scene would play” (Didion 50). Besides, Simard argues that Maria’s perspective on her relationship with Kate is unhealthy as well. He says that “Kate is a concept to Maria, a self-object, someone Maria needs to complete herself – even though her affection for her daughter is undoubtedly authentic, if misguided” (Simard Page). One can see how Maria’s narcissistic personality creeps into every facet of her life starting from her career to BZ’s suicide to her relationship with her daughter. She is most likely in the right place
We all experience losses as we grow older in life. These losses are usually about our physical or inner self. However, sometimes these losses could be about how our relationships with others have been lost or changed due to growing up. For example, in the story How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez, four sisters suffer or experience losses as a result of growing up into older young women. All this started when the four sisters moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic at a young age. This affects the four sisters because they encounter problems or obstacles as they age into young adults. For instance, Julia Alvarez shows that growing up is a process of losing respect, sanity, and a loving friend.
In all, I feel that the author’s message was to prepare the reader being the college freshman on the journey to becoming a college student. The author wants the reader to know not to lose what they have learned before making the journey of becoming a college student. I believe that if you stick to what you have learned prior to becoming a college student, and know that this is a journey where you will find success, in not losing who you are you will graduate and will have fewer worries on the
In Paul Toughmay’s “Who Gets to Graduate,” he follows a young first year college student, Vanessa Brewer, explaining her doubts, fears, and emotions while starting her college journey. As a student, at the University of Texas Brewer feels small and as if she doesn’t belong. Seeking advice from her family she calls her mom but after their conversation Brewer feels even more discouraged. Similar to Brewer I have had extreme emotions, doubts, and fears my freshman year in college.
Schooling is a very important aspect in our lives and one must go through many steps to gain a higher education. Two of these steps are high school and college. Although high school and college students aim for the same goal, which is acquiring an education and graduating, the demands, expectations, and social atmosphere extremely contrast.
School is an exceptionally important phase in our lives. Elementary, middle school, high school, and college are the places where besides our homes we learn most of our principles and moral values. I consider high school and college as the most important chapters in my life. However, high school and college education systems differ from each other in various aspects. Back when I was in high school, I thought that college would be just a follow-up, but slightly more complicated. Now that I am a college student, I realize that it is considerably more complex than high school. High school, as well as college, is just another part of our lives. But in order to go to college, we have to go through the agonizing four years of high school. In those four years, we experience loads of homework, trying to choose classes with friends, and the minuscule amount of freedom that is given. College is similar to when it comes to all the homework, choosing classes, and sometimes not being trusted. But they are still different in many ways. High school and college have many differences but similarities as well.
School plays an important role in our lives. Many people will spend more than fifteen years at school in order to get the qualifications that are required to work in a specific field. Those years are broken down into several levels, some of them being more enjoyable than others. Two very important levels that people go through are high school and college. Even though some think that these levels are almost the same, there are significant differences between them. The cost of high school is not the same as the cost of college. Also, some differences apply from an academic point of view. Typically, the social environment also differs from high school to college, which can be related to the question of freedom versus responsibility.
