Mesopotamia was colonized by Sumerians, but was later conquered by Akkadians. Soon, the Akkadians established the Mesopotamian civilization with Sumerian ideas and practices. The civilization centered around religion. With religion, Mesopotamians were able to understand nature and society.
Mesopotamia is located between the valleys of Tigris and Euphrates Rivers . With their environment, Mesopotamians did not have a sense of security as floods occurred. The people of Mesopotamia believed that gods were in control of nature. Sumerians have also diffused their culture of mythmaking into the Mesopotamian civilization. Mythmaking were based on imagination, but was also a basis for understanding nature. The Mesopotamians believed in the existence of multiple gods in the moon, sky, water, and sun. Since natural disasters were signs from the gods, they purposely found ways to bless and praise the gods in return for security. By doing so, they created temples to provide food, shelter, clothing, and assistance to the gods and their family. The gods were not only capable of controlling natural disasters, but also the fate of humans.
