Mesopotamia come from a Greek word meaning “between the rivers” because it is located between the rivers of Tigris and Euphrates. The lower Mesopotamia is now located in Iraq and the upper Mesopotamia is in Syria and Turkey. It is considered as the world’s earliest civilization which started way back 7,000 BC. The the rivers often flood leaving behind rich and fertile soil on the river banks of the region, this made Mesopotamia part of the Fertile Crescent. The Sumerians were the first major civilization in Mesopotamia and were also the first to build cities, establish monarchies and bureaucracies. They were also the one who developed trade with bartering. Later on the Sumerians was conquered by the Babylonians. Babylonian king Hammurabi united the cities of Summer and eventually expanded his empire all the way to Asia Minor. His invasion with other states had brought great power and trade in the city. He also built walls around Babylon and improves its diplomacy and irrigation system. King Hammurabi is known in his “Code of Hammurabi”. The lasting innovations by the Babylonians was the advances in mathematics, astronomy and trade. After Hammurabi’s reign, Babylonians were attacked by the Hittites and eventually was conquered by the Assyrians. They invented the battering ram, which they used to pound down city walls. They used catapults to throw rocks at enemies, and the protected their archers.
