A. Time Log
The time log (see attached) contains documentation of the field experience for this community health project.
B1. Community Assessment
The geographic area known as Cherokee County, South Carolina covers 392.66 square miles of land (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016). Cities and towns within Cherokee County include Gaffney, which is the county seat and Blacksburg. Data obtained from City-Data.com (2012) reveals Cherokee County is 61% rural and 39% urban. Population estimates given July 1, 2015 list the population at 56,194 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016). According to the U.S. Census (2016) the demographics of Cherokee County reveal the following: 6.3% of the population is under the age of 5, 23.9 % is under the age of 18, 15.2% is 65 years of age or greater, females represent 51.5%, 76.5 % are considered to be white, and 20.7% are black. Estimates of the population on the levels of education reveals 77.1 % have graduated high school and 14.7% have a bachelor’s degree or higher (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016).
Cherokee County’s median income in 2014 was listed at $34,766 but the per capita income was determined to be $19,185 and 22.3% of the population lives in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016). A visual assessment of the inner city and town areas reveal a disproportionately larger number of homes are small and in disrepair. There are also a large number of mobile home parks and single mobile homes in disrepair as well. There are some well-kept neighborhoods and these are usually secluded away from the main communities. I was also able to attend a heart health screening held at a local high school and this event was available to 11th and 12th graders and teachers. The services provided at this session were similar to those listed above and also included body fat percentage measurements. This event was well received and well attended since students, with parental permission to attend, were able to get out of class. These events all increased awareness of the problems associated with obesity and presented ways to prevent obesity.
Medical practice interviews and site visits included a rehabilitation facility, an out-patient dialysis clinic, a dental practice office, and a site visit to a men’s shelter for free dental services by the above dental staff. These practices all provided diet, health, and wellness education for
