Nadia is going to undertake her first large writing project. She wants to write a novel. She has been reading and enjoying novels for as long as she can remember.
Now that she is thirteen years old, she wants to try to write a novel for other teenagers like her.
The first thing she wants to do is select a theme. Themes unify writing under a main subject.
Nadia knows that if she writes with a theme in mind that it will increase the quality of the novel.
Some of the themes she considered are good vs. evil, family love, and coming of age. In the end she chose the coming of age theme.
Her novel will be about a young girl like herself coping with the many changes of being a teenager. It will include life

In order to gather some ideas for her story, Nadia began reading other coming-of-age stories. Most of them were novels.
However, she did come across this one text that was about a favorite singer of hers. It was a coming of age story as well, which fit perfectly with her theme.
She decided to read that one too, even though it was non-fiction. She found that in both fiction and non-fiction, the theme was presented in a sensitive, personal way.
After reading so many coming-of-age stories, Nadia began reflecting on her own life and the experiences she has yet to have.
She personally connected to the character’s inward journey and emotions.

In “Eleven”, written by Sandra Cisneros, Cisneros uses literary techniques such as diction and imagery to characterize Rachel’s character during her transition from age ten to age 11. These literary techniques help to describe how Rachel feels in certain situations while also explaining her qualities and traits. Through the use of these literary techniques Cisneros also collaborated on Rachel’s feelings when she was other ages and how she felt at that time during her life.

Additionally, Sandra Cineros expresses Rachel not only as the main character of the story, but also the narrator. From one perspective, we know we can label her as a reliable narrator since what she says we can believe is true because she believes it herself. However, though she might not intent on deceiving us, readers might consider her unreliable because of her age and how she might over or under express her experience. Moreover, she has a limited range to what she can relate her feelings too which communicates her narrow point of view. “…like my wooden dolls that fit one inside the other, each year inside the next one. That’s how being eleven years old is” (36). Rachel compares her age to her wooden dolls which illustrates her eleven year old mindset; therefore, she attains a limited and unreliable point of view. Overall, Rachel’s reliability and unreliability as a narrator shapes the story as a whole because readers now understand her emotional delicacy brought upon by her age which changes how readers perceive her thoughts and feelings. In the end, as first person persistently appears throughout the story “Eleven,” readers acquire a more profound and insightful understanding of Rachel’s emotions and thoughts and the powerful effect those feelings convey on the

If a non-fiction book was only filled with facts readers would quickly lose interest and not want to read it. Also, without personal opinions and anecdotes, the book would lack a purpose. Style is crucial to having a book that appeals to the reader’s attention span, and if there is no connection to the reader through the author’s personality, then this book is not successful due to the lack of a personal voice from the author.

At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives, needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons’ use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons’ own experiences as a young girl. Kaye Gibbons’ experiences as a child are the foundations for this.
Once I picked up Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, reading was forever changed for me. At the time, I was confident that I would write my own novel some day and longed to possess the magic that Picoult’s work had. Her style for writing narratives is unique from almost anything else I’ve found to read with a mixed genre of contemporary, mystery, and crime. Elements in her writing that inspire me include topics that are realistic, relatable, and heavily researched, several different points of view that allow the reader to develop compelling opinions of each character, and emotions that tug the reader’s heart strings.
