Colonialism research Colonialism is when a powerful country takes over a less powerful country and begins to rule that country as a subordinate; all the resources of the colonized country are controlled by its colonial superior. Colonial governments were unfair, greedy and power hungry. Colonialism took place between the 1870s and 1900s (Iweriebor). During that time Africa faced European imperialist aggression, diplomatic pressures, military invasions and eventual conquest (Iweriebor). By the 1900 much of Africa had been colonized by seven European powers; Britain, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Italy (Iweriebor). The Colonizers felt that it was their duty to “civilize” the Africans. Missionaries began the process of Christianization of Africans, this was part of the European ideology of “civilizing” them (“Imperialism”). Christian missionaries set up schools and churches, teaching them the English language and Christian ways (“Imperialism”). Politically, the European nations wanted power and prestige (“Imperialism”). Wealth in terms of territorial gains meant power, and the more territorial a county controlled, the more powerful it was (“Imperialism”). Territorial control was also advantageous during wars, it gave the county strategic advantages worldwide (“Imperialism”).
