My dad isn’t someone “famous” in Michigan history or someone who did something others may see as heroic, but he is MY Michigan Hero. He was born on August 5th, 1966 in Jackson, Michigan and is the youngest of four children. Both of his parents worked hard in order to provide for their children as they faced the struggles of the time with a large family to support. From a young age, he learned that a good work ethic was important to have. Andy Kershaw, my father, has always had the drive and passion to succeed. He always encourages me to succeed and become as good a worker and someday, a husband and father, as he is.
As I said before, my father wasn’t born into the richest family, but they were a loving family. He grew up near Jackson, Michigan with his 2 brothers and sister. He got decent grades in school and worked his way through with good, solid math and social skills. After graduating high school, he had many jobs and enjoyed them all. He especially liked the one in which he worked with building and maintaining arcade games.

He continued to work with video games in a warehouse (with a boss who wasn’t very appreciative of his work). Although his money was somewhat tight, he enjoyed his job and worked with passion. He met my mother in 1993, and they were married three years later. With some of his “profit”, he was able to purchase his second truck with his own money. Halfway through his career, his boss promised him a bonus he never got. My father, a hard working man, didn’t work to not get paid, so he quit with dignity. Now, my future father was jobless. He had to set his drive to work to a new
Assignment details: Analyze the components of the hero’s journey. Basically, support the argument that Jaws follows the epic hero cycle. Name specific examples from the movie and connect them to the hero’s journey. However, this is not a plot summary. You are not retelling the story, but selecting examples to support the analysis.
What is a hero? To our understanding, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, and writer wrote The Odyssey. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
With no bias, he is the hardest working person I have ever met. Driving early morning trains, my dad goes to work at 4 a.m. When he is dismissed from his “real job” around one O’clock, he then heads to one of the various homes he is working on, and works until he is required to get my siblings and I off the bus. If no one ever stopped him, I not sure he would. Not only does my father dedicate tremendous time and attention to what he does, he ensures it is perfected. For a brief period in his over 20 years working at NJ Transit, my dad was a manager.
In writing about an important person in my life, there are a number of people that I could discuss. But, I feel that the person who is very special to me and one who has been the most influential, is my dad.
Again, another big life-changing decision. After the death of his boss, his inheritance from him wasn’t given. He joined the army and found great success travelling the world, gaining recognition for his achievements. This wasn’t enough for me. He wanted more money.
Your nationality plays a huge part in who you are in the society. Your culture, background, and identity are all influenced by your nationality. Now, how would you feel if someone or a certain group wants you to start forgetting about your origin and wants you to begin learning another lifestyle that doesn’t match yours? Maybe if you are adult enough, you can prevent it from happening by rejecting that person’s idea. But if you are young, you could be merged easily with the kind of lifestyle that the person or group wants you to be like. That’s because young children are innocent, and they are still figuring out their identity. Naturally, when you put young children or teenagers with certain kinds of people, they will gradually start picking up habits of the people they are surrounded with. Jim Thorpe was one of those young – adults who were put in the Carlisle Indian School. In this school/ camp, the whites turn Native American children’s lifestyle into theirs.
Gaining wealth isn’t necessarily a good thing. It changes people, replacing the things that were once most important in their lives with an expensive outfit or fancy sport car. This is what happened with the family of Richard Rodriguez. As he and his siblings make history in their family by being the first to get a college education, their lives also change as the become successful in their fields of choice and come into money they never had growing up. Rodriguez shows through a passage about a typical Christmas morning with his family as a grown up how much his siblings, and even himself, have changed. Where once family was at the center of the Rodriguez’s live, the children are more concerned with what gifts the
When my mom and dad got into a divorce, Lightning Mcqueen was the only thing that kept me from bursting out into tears. It was one of the hardest things that I had to deal with in my life. It was a very sad time for me because when this happened, I didn’t see my dad for a long time. Now all I can do is hope that my dad will become as successful as he was when I was 8 years old. I say this because my dad lost his car when a drunk driver hit his car and totaled it, and with that, he lost his job, house, and any form possible to pay child support. Now he is living with my Grandma and Papa in Oildale. I only see him two to five times a month
my father never had much of an education, only an education on how to work hard. My father was one of 16 children, he was the son of a both wealthy and intelligent father. My grandfather was the owner of much land, the husband of many wives, and the father of many children. He whipped his children into shape on how to become diligent, wise, and stern both figuratively and literally. My father never learned much of love from his father nor his mother as he trouble with parenting, he also has taught himself many things but lacks some education compared to high
My family moved onto the car lot when I was in seventh grade. My father had been in the used car business for only about five years. As an adult my father had switched jobs more often than most middle class parents are accustomed. Before taking on the title of a car salesman, he had held a well-paying state department position in which he trained the unemployed so they could find work. However, he claims that by the end his job had become more about paper work and less about people. You see, my dad is a businessman, or at least prides himself as one. People are his game. He saw the car business as the perfect profession to utilize his gifts that were so shamefully being wasted at his old job.
For over 24 years my father supported my entire household. Unfortunately, he was injured well working. This allowed him to realize that my mother's
My dad is my hero. This does not mean I think he’s “father of the year” because, trust me, he’s not even close, He is my hero because he managed to completely change his outlook on life. My life today would be very different if not for him. I found out a few months ago he actually grew up Catholic. He was expected to go to church all the time, get married fairly young, and have kids. For a while, he was the poster child
His parents were very hard workers, his father was an air brake mechanic, at the
I remember my father as a man who worked hard, cared for his family and taught many lessons without intending to do so. He was well respected in our neighborhood. People gravitated toward him. Most of the time he was a good natured man who told entertaining stories of his youth and growing up during the 1930’s in the segregated south, or stories about his Army service in Italy and North Africa during World War II. He was not to be disrespected nor his kids subjected to unfairness or threat of harm. That would set him off. He could unleash a venom laced tirade filled with threats of violence though I have never seen him lay a hand on anyone.
Like everyone else, family and friends have played a vital part in my life and have affected my outlook on money and career. I grew up in a family of six, with my father, who is an IT engineer, as the head and sole breadwinner of the family because in my country -Saudi Arabia- there aren’t many opportunities for women to advance. Although he made sure that we lived a pretty comfortable life, I would often see him foregoing his needs and wants to fulfil those of his family. So, I wondered about how different our lives could have been if my mom (or me as the oldest child) were working along with him. I believe that a person
