A big controversial topic in the NCAA is the idea that college athletes should get paid. Getting paid means earning an actual pay check from the college this does not include a scholarship. The only athletes that are getting paid today are the ones playing professionally. If college athletes began to get paid then, a portion of the ticket and merchandise sells would go to the athletes. Corey Walker from Bleacher Report states that “Collegiate athletes should be getting paid.” (Walker2) I strongly disagree that college athletes should get paid. In Walkers article he goes on about how “The NCAA could not care less about academics.” (Walker2) this is a false statement. The NCAA gives out multiple acedmic awards like academic all American. They have always had a target on their back that is what comes from being a student athlete meet high expectations from people who do not understand sports. He is the media so his argument there just collapsed on itself. Walker then goes on how to fix the problem but, he never gives a real solution just keeps saying “ Pay the players” (Walker2) until we are sick and tired of it. I would give him credibility if he went on where the money goes and how they would split it up. He never explains the big picture of paying players for instance if a student is on the wrestling team and another is the starting quarterback for the football team. Who gets paid more because; the football team makes the most money on ticket sells. So does the earned money from the football team get cut into pieces for other teams? This is bigger than just saying “Pay the players” (Wallker2) it is going to have a lot of thought for the NCAA to consider paying student athletes. Libby Sander wrote an article about college sports spending money and how other sports such as basketball get a bigger budget. She writes the idea of John D. Columbo how he believes that everyone should get the same budget in college sports. Mr. Columbo then goes on how it is happening everywhere in college” But I can also tell you I’m absolutely certain there’s a $32- million at the University of Kentucky that’s not going to women’s tennis.” (Sander2) He is saying that the basketball team at Kentucky brought in thirty two million dollars and none of that goes any other sport.
