It took me approximately six years after high school graduation to finally figure but what I wanted to do with my life. Those years in limbo were trying and difficult, but I learned who I was and what I wanted; to say it was a waste of time, would be a gross understatement. I am not proud of the way some of the events in my life have unfolded, but as a result of my hardship I have become a more engaged learner. At the end of my six years of folly, I started my vigorous pursuit of the communication studies major. This education has been helpful to me, not only in making me an attractive candidate for the future job market, but also in shaping who I am and who I will become. I have become a better person through the concepts and principles
I have learned and subsequently applied to my life. I love remembering obscure theories relating to present situations with my friends and family, then geeking out by attempting to explain what is happening only to be rewarded with dumbfounded gapes. Maybe those around me don’t have the level of passion I have had instilled in me for the past four years, but I can’t help trying to make them understand. My awareness of certain societal practices has enabled me to become a more communicatively competent and contributing member of the community. In this review of my education, I will explain five of my favorite aspects I have learned during my undergraduate experience. These five things have struck me as particularly important, not just for general knowledge to increase citizenship, but as a means of shaping my worldview, and thus my future. As a brief summary of my undergraduate career, I will cover the functions of images in relation to remembering and memorializing, Psychological Reactance Theory within the realms of persuasion, relationship building regarding Social Penetration Theory, interviewing with an emphasis on the importance of tailoring a resume, and persuasive credibility when using celebrity endorsements.
Throughout high school and during my undergraduate studies, education was never a top priority for me. Only during the past two years, in the "real world", have I realized the importance of education. I look back at those years and wish I had done more and realized all the potential I had in my hands and not wasted so much time. During my undergraduate career my social activities consumed my life. My friends were not motivated to do well in school so I followed their lead. My grades were low, and I did not even care. After I graduated in 1997 with a Psychology B.A. and lost touch with my old friends and old ways, I have realized that I should have spent more time doing some soul searching and thinking what it was that I wanted to do with my life. I liked Psychology but what I really wanted to do was work with children more closely. I had spent my junior and senior years involved in internships at Head Start and at a High School in a Program for teenaged mothers. I loved my work there. At Head Start I was a Teacher Aid for the pre-school, teaching the children to read, numbers etc. And at the High School I counseled the teenaged mothers, took care of their kids while they went to school and after the school day I tutored them with their homework. After being out of school for a while, I started to miss that. The feeling that I was teaching something those kids, the feeling that I was making a difference. I was determined to find a job in education, with my background in Psychology, how hard could it be? I found work at a residential school for runaways and abused teenaged females. It was great! I was ready to go, I was going to change the world and change those girls lives. What I didn't realize is that will alone does not make me a teacher and that I needed training, a lot of training. I made a lot of mistakes in that job. I got discouraged and decided to forget about working with children, forget teaching and do something else that paid more. So, I got a job as a Secretary, I did that for about two years. Teaching, working with children was always on my mind.
I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do with my life after high school. I sat at home, on the computer, searching for careers and colleges majors online, night after night. I’d ask my parents, “What should I do with my life?” They would repeatedly give me the same answer, “Whatever your little heart desires.” That response just made me even more confused and frustrated because it reminded me of how many different options I had to choose from. I knew I wanted to continue my education by attending college, but there are so many aspects to think about when considering a college, such as, the type, cost, size, and distance of the college. I would stay awake in bed at night stressing about it. I knew I wanted to attend a college close
As the end of my senior year in high school approached, I had to make an important decision. What school was I going to spend the next few years of my life at? When the financial aid packages arrived, I was torn between two colleges. After sitting down with my mother and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both schools, I came to my final decision. It seemed like a year ago I was imagining what college life would be like and suddenly before my eyes, I would be a college student in a matter of four months.
I was very unsure about which college I wanted to go after I graduated from High School. I wanted to find a College that would best set me up for a successful career, but there seemed like so many choices. After discussing the problem with my parents, their first suggestion was that I attend the Citadel. They talked about how everyone who graduated was guaranteed a great career and would be more likely to be chosen for a job then graduates from another college. It all sounded great at first until I learned about the rules and physical activities. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the P.T or that I would slip up and break the honor code which would cause me to get expelled and waste my parent's money. I let some time pass
I was a college drop out. At the age of nineteen, in an epiphany of infinite wisdom, I walked off the Community College of Baltimore County’s Essex campus. I was going to work as a medical secretary for a hot, young vascular surgeon. I was bypassing school. I didn’t think going to school to be a writer seemed realistic anymore. My family in the fire department thought I should give up being “artsy-fartsy” and go be a nurse. They were just glad I didn’t go to that art school to be an actress, even if it broke my mother’s heart to see me turn it down. All my other friends were going to spend hours in the drudgery of lecture halls and study groups, but with my $13 an hour, I was going to get ahead. “When I have an apartment in the city, I’ll take some night classes”, I thought. I didn’t know at that moment that the next time I sat in a classroom would be 13 years later and 500 miles away. Nor was I aware of the fact that I would occupy a comedic amount of jobs during that time. Not until I was 32 would I realize that if I would have stayed in school, I may have concluded much earlier that my real passion would be expression and communicating. Now, I am certain that my life experiences, scope of occupations, and honed skills in
My life is full of inspirational individuals. They have given me the gratitude of others and I want to do the same. I want my life to be an inspiration for others that they could look up to. It has inspired me to giving back to the community.
I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. These decisions will either make or break my life, and I want to make sure that I make them to the best of my ability because there is no turning back. I need to make sure I definitely want to attend college. The decision is totally up to me. There are many positives and negatives of attending college. Go over them, and then decide. I know myself better then anyone else, and I won’t let anyone else tell me what to do. I will make sure if I am going to attend college that I have something in mind that I will want to do, to succeed in. Choosing a major can be a very stressful situation so why not sit down and take some time to do it? Be creative, don’t rush, give yourself plenty of time and really think about what interests you in life. My major is something that I will want to enjoy, something that I will be doing for the rest of my life. Why would I want to be miserable at something I do in life? In two short essays: “College? What’s in It for me?” by Steven M. Richardson, and “What It Means to Be Creative”, by S.I. Hayakawa, I can relate to my major very well. Athletic Training is something that takes skill, as well as being creative in your own way. No two Athletic Trainers are the same. The more creative I am at whatever I do, the better off I will be. I hold the keys to all the doors that can ...
Life after high school can be easy or difficult transitions. Some people depart from with their friends, while some become more fearful mostly knowing that everything is about to change for them. It all depends on what you do or what you allow to happen in your life is what will speak for you. It is usually simple for people that are aware of what they want to do or become after high school. However, it is tougher for those who feel like the world owe them something or do not have the appropriate support. Usually after high school 65.9% percent of people go to college, while some join the military or go to the workforce. At this in stage in life, it is necessary to know what journey you want to take because they all have requirements that are crucial and that need to be met because nobody is going hand them out to you in this life.
There are three things which have governed most of my life and decisions: new experiences, adventure, and meaningfulness.
My first day was great, all we did was get introduced and didn’t do any work. I was nervous at first because I thought that I would walk into a wrong class. I think everyone thinks high school is serious, but we all will remember “good morning Hollister high, today’s lunch is a hot dog.” There’s not much difference between middle school and high school.
I'm still in high school, but I wish I did a lot of things differently. First would be my perspective on the high school experience. I would change looking at high school as another couple of years before going to college, it's actually more important than that. The 4 years of high school are the last years of one's childhood and it's the time to prep for college (adulthood).
During my time in high school, I often felt bogged down by the required, yet seemingly worthless classes that I had to take in order to graduate. As a result, I began pondering the opportunities which were open to me that could benefit me in ways that high school failed to do. That being said, the summer before my junior year caused me to seriously consider attending the community college near my high school, which I felt was an amazing opportunity to meet new people, and to take classes which would significantly benefit me in the long-run. As a result, I decided to act upon those intentions and enroll in a Statistics course during the fall semester of my junior year. The thought of indulging in an institution that was somewhat foreign to me
My junior year of high school I found my passion for robotics and engineering. In order to really explore my passion I had to join the robotics club on top of being in the class but what was holding me back all along was knowing that I would be the only girl in the class. My first day in the class I would receive comments from the boys such as "why are you here?" and "girls don't know how to build". But as an independent and strong girl in the class I would not listen to there comments. Instead, it became my duty to create the best robot for my first assignment. As the year progressed, I realized that there are not enough girls in the STEAM department. It became my mission to make a little change my inspiring and encouraging my peers to get
High school has been a great opportunity for me to learn new things and to push myself academically and I am very pleased with time I’ve had here. After high school ends, I plan to further my education and expand my horizons at a university that will help me succeed and accomplish my goals. I am very interested in learning new business skills that could help me in the arts and entertainment field one day. I have always been fascinated with the entertainment industry so If I could become part of the business aspect of it, I could definitely see myself being proud of what I have accomplished. I am currently involved theatre arts classes and in my school’s drama club as an active crew member and actor. I also participate in business classes and
I never thought I would be applying to college….. ever since I was a really young girl I
