In the article Collaboration between general and special educators and student outcomes: A need for more research.Van Garderen, D., Stormont, M., & Goel, N. (2012) explores how much is known and understood about actual collaboration, The purpose was to review the literature and explore the impact that collaboration has on academic and social or behavioral outcome for students with disabilities. A total of 19 studies was done finding that support collaboration for improved outcomes was tentative at best. Given the small number of studies represented in the research as well as a variety of research designs and collaboration models. It was concluded that more research is needed. But collaboration does benefit students.

The benefits of collaboration for teachers gave been noted such as; instructional improvement through the use of a greater variety of teaching techniques, improved knowledge and skills for teaching, professional growth, more positive attitudes toward teaching, and so on. Less, however, is known about the impact, both academically and socially, of collaboration with students, particularly with students who have disabilities. Since the researcher wanted to prove that an impact is true. The decided to do this study that focused on the inclusion model in the K-12 classroom. Each study had to (a) include a research question and/or a purpose statement, (b) include a section detailing how the study was carried out, (c) include a clearly labeled or noted results/findings section, and (d) be researcher initiated (e.g., not teacher initiated focusing on an issue in the author(s) own practice). After an intensive computer search, they were able to shorten 221 studies to 19 articles that match the requirement. Many of the studies included different idea but they all involved student with a range of disabilities. They found that in theory collaboration impacts many disable students. But given the small amount of studies given the results are tentative at best. Two teacher co-teaching a class do not focus on just their usual students. It is true that the general educator will focus on her general student must think about the disable students to. The same goes for the special educator. All student need to be considered. The impact of successful collaboration does not just affect one group. For example, there should be a time the teacher switch in teaching. When this happen is the special educator just going to teach their own group of students? No, they expect to teach the group.
