As a result of the recent controversy over social injustices, specifically racial, 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, took a knee during the national anthem. This was because Kaepernick felt as though he should not stand for an anthem that does not fully represent people of color. To add, the country is somewhat divided between the Black Lives Matter and the Blue Lives Matter movements. To illustrate, Kaepernick’s actions created a sort of domino effect, causing other professional athletes who support Black Lives Matter to do the same thing. Although, it must be remembered that in America, citizens have the right to kneel during the anthem, whereas in other countries, such an act would not be acceptable at all. Furthermore, it must be noted that Kaepernick decided to silently protest during Military night. Not only, but during his silent protest, a Marine band was playing and a retired parachute team of Navy SEALs were leaping onto the field. All of which are men and women that have sacrificed their rights so that Kaepernick could protest without any repercussions. Although Kaepernick does have the right to do such an act, and it is entirely true that racial injustices are still prominent, I personally do not believe his protest was justified. …show more content…
Although injustices are still an issue, the American government has actively been working toward reducing them. Not only, but like stated prior, men and women have sacrificed their rights and lives. Such sacrifices enable American citizens to have such freedoms that allow them to work toward social reform. That should be enough for Kaepernick to stand during the
Following recent cases of police brutality and racial oppression, many public figures are taking it upon themselves to stand against the issues. In this matter, Colin Kaepernick has been in the spotlight since his protest during a preseason game in August, where he took a knee during the National Anthem. In the articles “The Colin Kaepernick Effect; Another Athlete Stands Up For Social Issues” by LA Watts Times Sports Writer, Amanda Scurlock and “Colin Kaepernick’s Critics Called Him an Idiot. Who’s the Idiot Now?” by Slate Executive Director, Josh Levin, the authors talk about how Colin Kaepernick’s peaceful protest has had many positive and negative backlash. Kaepernick has received much support from not only his fans, but also people such
First of all, kneeling the National Anthem is an ineffective and, counterproductive way to promote a cause. Knelling for the National Anthem isn't going to change anything besides lowering the rates on TV and getting negative comments online. Football coach Dabu Swinney said "I don’t think it's good to be a distraction to your team. I don’t think it's good to use your team as the platform." Patti Armstrong States that" you don’t get respect from showing disrespect." Philadelphia Eagles support the protest but disagree with the way he did so. Kneeling for the National Anthem is not a proper way to protest police brutality for colored ("Refusing"). These are some of the few reasons kneeling for the national anthem is an ineffective way of protesting.

Eddie learned a lot about football from his dad, but when Walter was born, he knew he would have competition. At a very young age Walter and Eddie would have pickup games in the backyard. When Walter was 5 he started to play in a little league. Coaches were shocked to see Walter play football, almost every time he touched the football, touchdown. Not only his parents, but the players, and the coaches noticed that the harder Walter works he could go far.

According to Kaleem (2016),” Africans Americans athletes have grappled with complicated feelings about patriotism and if the country has embraced colored people”. And the controversial point with Kaepernick’s stance Kaleem (2016) says is that “challenging patriotism is controversial”, But however, anybody with unalienable rights is able to challenge that notion and stand up for what he or she believes in. According to Kaleem (2016), in the article it talks about Black Lives Matter and these are examples of African American’s from the past have not been treated with the same rights and people who stand for the national anthem have not tried to protest at all. Kaepernick’s protest has been able to counter exist because of his stance against police and getting black people and colored people to stand with him on this subject. It is often said that America is OK as it is right now, Kaleen (2016) but it can also be said that Kaepernick’s stance is not just about who’s equal, but also is about why people are still dying and why must be just colored
Despite a dominant 40-10 win against the San Fransisco 49ers, it is not all good news for the Dallas Cowboys looking back on Sunday evening’s showing. The Dallas Cowboy’s lost All-Pro kicker, Dan Bailey, mid game, due to a groin strain in his kicking leg. It was announced this morning that Bailey could be out for several weeks while recovering.
This protest began on August 26, 2016 when Colin Kaepernick, a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, first took a seat on the sideline bench at a preseason game during the National Anthem. Later he transitioned to kneeling alongside his standing teammates. The reason behind Kaepernick’s protest was to draw attention to racial injustice and police brutality in the United States against African Americans. After the public noticed Kaepernick’s revolt, a national discussion sparked. Many people think that kneeling during the National Anthem was not the most respectful approach Kaepernick could’ve taken. The certain group of people that
The Star Spangled Banner is a sacred song in the United States of America. It not only is a symbol of the fight that soldiers have had to go through, but also a representation of freedom. When the National Anthem plays out of respect for our country, and those who fought for it, everyone is supposed to stand and remove their hats. Currently in the National Football League (NFL) there is a handful of players, mainly African Americans, that have been taking a knee or raising a fist during the play of our National Anthem. This I believe, is a great sign of disrespect for our country and our veterans. This I believe, is very immature and unnecessary. This I believe, should be put to a stop by the NFL and the players should be ashamed of himself for doing this. I am aware that the players have the right to do this, but there are many reasons why this should not be taking place.
People are born free, and everyone should have equal rights. If anyone reject others from their rights so they should protest to get their rights back. During 1960s people made some movements in order to get their rights which we call civil rights movement. In that movement African-American also made a movements in order to get voting rights act passed. There were a lot of restriction in front of them to get their voting rights. Voting rights Act of 1965 is a significant Act for African American in order to have equality in the United States. Voting rights gave a chance to African American to get their democratic rights but still today African-Americans are struggling for their voting rights.
Professional NFL player Colin Kaepernick, is out of a job for kneeling during the National Anthem. The first amendment states the freedom of speech. You should have the right to free speech where ever for equality and justice. Kneeling does not show disrespect towards our flag or our veterans. The veterans of our country did not fight for us to stand for a symbol that you may or may not believe. They fought for us to have the right to free speech for equality and justice.
Imagine walking into a Woolworth’s store on a sunny afternoon only to be greeted by twenty pairs of white people’s eyes all directed towards the door. Imagine sitting down with two other blacks and demanding service. Next, imagine service being denied, and seeing a woman dragged by her hair across the floor, other blacks beaten in front of everyone, and no one making a move to help. This is a common scene at many sit-ins across the country today. The reason for these sit-ins is people fighting for civil rights. Civil Rights is the nonpolitical rights of a citizen. Blacks are becoming the subjects of violence, their self-esteem is lowered, making them feel inferior and most importantly they are denied their freedom of choice. Many actions have been taken to try and resolve the problem, that blacks are being denied their civil rights.
Nowhere in the Declaration did the founding fathers write that, regardless of race or gender, everyone has equal rights. Thanks to peaceful resistance of society’s standards from people like Martin Luther King Jr. and Susan B. Anthony, we as a nation have become more equal, therefore stronger. Having a voice is part of what makes being an American a privilege. Peaceful resistance is essential, and it is because this works and has a positive impact on society that resistance remains in check, never becoming too violent. The moment we turn to violence is the moment our country will be in grave danger. One of the greatest aspects of America that I take pride in and that other countries should admire is our equality and freedoms; our voice in this nation. Countless situations, including the resistance of Martin Luther King Jr. and Susan B. Anthony, have proven our own individual powers as a people of peace, and our voices in peaceful protest have helped to develop this country into the better nation it is
Towards the end of 2016, many Americans witnessed professional athletes of the National Football League taking a knee during the National Anthem on live television. The person who started this protest is Collin . He started the protest to fight against police cruelty against African- Americans. The movement inspires other athletes to get involved hoping to make a change in the community. While some people consider that the athletes are practicing their rights of speech, other people argues that the protests may not be appropriate referring to their job. In fact, the NFL players do have the right to practice their right of speech.
Colin Kaepernick thrust himself into the national spotlight when he decided to kneel during the singing of the National Anthem that preceded a San Francisco 49ers preseason game. Kaepernick explained during an interview that he was kneeling to “stand with the people that are being oppressed.” I was confused an even angered by the fact that man who was admired by so many people, including myself, refused to take part in a tradition that has been upheld by the citizens of our country for hundreds of years. Although I admired that he took a stance against social injustice, I did not believe that we should fight injustice with disrespect for our nation. The truth is that my outside-in perspective did not allow me to have a complete understanding of what Colin was trying to achieve. My life was changed when my close friends flipped my view on this cause and gave me a broadened frame of reference towards protest and social activism.
