Upon completing this group project it was discovered that both approaches to therapy are valid when it comes to treating and stabilizing individuals with eating disorders. Each approach has its strengths to offer to the therapeutic process, such as, identifying individual needs and equipping the client with the tools to change one 's thought process. For treatment to be effective with eating disorders, it has to address the cognitions or the dysfunctional assumption that has led to the maladaptive self-defeating harmful behaviors. Often individuals with eating disorders use their dysfunctional assumption with the intent to harm others as a form of control or power over others. There may be those individuals who work better under a more structured therapy, such as CBT, and the clear identification of cause and effect from cognition and emotion towards the ensuing behavior. Cognitive therapy model encourages clients to remain in the here and now. The behavioural therapy approach may not benefit those that are not willing to explore their past and likely this model will not be successful under these circumstances. Through guidance and communication this group was able to discover our own inner beliefs, so when confronted with an opposing view, it was not correlated as a direct personal attack on our knowledge. As stated by Johnson & Johnson (1988), “Students must feel safe enough to challenge each other’s ideas and reasoning” (p. 61). As nurses we will also need to develop a sense of self to be comfortable enough to recognize and incorporate others ideas This was an important moment, as it not only permitted us to have a better understanding of each other, it also allowed for us to respect each other’s perspective without it being forced on our current beliefs. Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) mainly focuses on the present of the client whereas Psychodynamic therapy largely focuses on the past of the client. I personally think that even though the past of the client may be responsible for his/her present condition, the problems affect clients’ daily routine. Therefore the focus of the therapy must target client’s present conditions. I find this interesting because unlike Psychodynamic therapy, CBT enables the therapist to become aware of clients’ immediate problems. It is significant because this may affect the client in such a way that he/ she might have to rely on therapist’s interpretation of their unconscious thoughts. For instance, CBT therapist might ask the client about past incidences if they are relevant to the therapy however the major focus will be on how the client’s current situation is affected. This article aims to prove that Acceptance and Commitment is the best method for treating eating disorders. Although Cognitive Behavior Therapy has shown some promising results. It supports this claim by stating that Cognitive Therapy is an effective treatment for bulimia and was given a grade A by the National Institute for Clinical Effectiveness Guidelines. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a hands-on form of psychotherapy that is empirically based, which focuses on the interrelationship between emotions, behaviors, and thoughts. Through CBT, patients are able to identify their distorted thinking and modify their beliefs in order to change their behaviors. Once a patient changes their distorted thinking, they are able to think in a more positive and realistic manner. Overall, CBT focuses on consistent problem solving strategies and changing negative thought distortions and negative behavior. There are different types of CBT, which share common elements. In it's simplest form, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, (or CBT as it will be referred to from here on out), refers to the approach of changing dysfunctional behaviors and thoughts to realistic and healthy ones. CBT encompasses several types of therapy focusing on the impact of an individual's thinking as it relates to expressed behaviors. Such models include rational emotive therapy (RET), rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT), behavior therapy (BT), Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT), Schema Focused Therapy, Cognitive therapy (CT). Most recently a few other variations have been linked to CBT such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) (Harrington and Pickles, 2009). The main aspect that all of these branches of therapy share, is that our thoughts relate to our external behaviors. External events and individuals do not cause the negative thoughts or feelings, but, instead the perception of events and situations is the root cause (National Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists, 2010).

This paper will provide background information about the intervention, address the target population, and describe program structure and key components. It will also provide examples of program implementation, challenges/barriers to implementing the practice, address how the practice supports recovery from a serious mental illness standpoint and provide a summary. Although there are several types of therapy available to treat depression and other mood disorders, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) has been one of the most widely used. It is thought to be very effective in treating depression in adolescents and adults. Many people think that they know all about eating disorders. They think that they already know all they need to know about them and that as long as your child or your friend or someone you care about doesn’t have it; you don’t have to worry about them. Well, how are you supposed to know when someone you love and care about has them if you don’t even know the basics about the eating disorders? Most of the times the person with the eating disorder was only trying to lose a couple pounds. However, the goal that was set turns into something more than just a couple of pounds and that person may go through extremes to try and get to that perfect body they have in mind. But the perfect body they have in mind is not perfect, not even close. It is a pure illusion in which teenagers are made to believe to be the definition of beauty.
Currently, in the United States, “eight million Americans suffer with an eating disorder” (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 2013, p.1). Though many may think that an eating disorder is only common in a woman’s life, men also suffer from this disease. Taking that statistic further, “ninety five percent of Americans between the ages of twelve and twenty five have an eating disorder” (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 2013, p.1). Men and women develop an eating disorder which results from a psych disorder. This disease is becoming an issue in America because “10% of Americans die in 10 years from an eating disorder” and everyone must become educated on this topic (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 2013, p.1). Others may disagree to attend educational events because they are not affected by this disease. To solve this problem, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) must have all Americans who are suffering from an eating disorder attend classes that are taught by survivors of an eating disorder.
Cognitive is defined as a mental process; it refers to everything going on in your mind including your thought processes and the way you are thinking and feeling. Behaviour refers to everything that you may do; this includes any action that you may present or act out, this can also be an indirect action that is caused by other underlying behaviours. Therapy is a systematic approach to try and resolve a problem, illness, actions, irregular thought patterns or anything that may be a disturbance that distracts you from your everyday functioning. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a dynamic mode of holistic intervention that seeks to change thought processes that are linked with emotions through a goal-orientated process (Freeman and Ronen, 2007). Individuals have a three-step thought process; inferences, evaluations and core beliefs. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy looks into the dysfunctional thinking a client may have, which influences their thoughts, mood and behaviour. This theory is kept very loose and non-structured; depending on the client different theories will have to be applied depending on their needs and emotions.
