Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy
- Albert Ellis is the first individual to utilize an approach centered around cognition and its influence on behavior. His A-B-C model revolves around the idea that stimuli initiate beliefs that in turn engage emotional response; he stated that dysfunction occurred in the presence of irrational beliefs that illicit inappropriate negative response. Ellis' approach was reserved mostly for individuals and couples, but some of the main principles of his theory would be passed down into family therapy.
- B.F. Skinner is primarily responsible for the development of operant conditioning; a theory that stated that behavior which is reinforced continues to persist over time while behavior that is not reinforced will not persist over time.

- Secondly, the concept of cognitive restructuring is something that really interests me from a therapy stand-point. Regardless of client there are undoubtedly set in behaviors and thinking that clients exhibit. The reactionary nature of those behaviors and thoughts usually mean that they are not always the most functional or appropriate, so this technique can be helpful with any form of negative reactionary behavior or thinking. It really gets the client to have more conscious thought into their behaviors and reactions and brings more self-awareness and insight.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a hands-on form of psychotherapy that is empirically based, which focuses on the interrelationship between emotions, behaviors, and thoughts. Through CBT, patients are able to identify their distorted thinking and modify their beliefs in order to change their behaviors. Once a patient changes their distorted thinking, they are able to think in a more positive and realistic manner. Overall, CBT focuses on consistent problem solving strategies and changing negative thought distortions and negative behavior. There are different types of CBT, which share common elements. Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a kind of CBT, which falls under the umbrella of CBT.
CBT adopts a perspective on learned behavior, whereas unhealthy behaviors can be learned and un-learned and then substituted for more healthy behaviors. This form of therapy does not assume that people are innately flawed, rather their environment and behaviors modeled by others teach them how to behave. Another important aspect of CBT is that thoughts and beliefs influence behavior. Social scientist and their theories such as Pavlov’s classical conditioning and Skinner’s operant conditioning contributed to the make-up of the CBT. Classical conditioning explains human behavior as a response to repeated stimuli. In relevance to Mrs. Kay’s case, the crying behaviors and feelings of helplessness are classically condition. In regards to operant conditioning, human behavior is contingent on reinforcements. A reward or positive reinforcement for a particular behavior encourages the behavior to continue and/or improve. In contrast, discipline or negative reinforcement of a behavior discourages the behavior from continuing, as well as allows the person to avoid unwanted or uncomfortable experiences. Both positive and negative reinforcements can lead a person to continuing the behavior that will give them the reinforcement that they desire. It focuses on peoples underlying thoughts and past experiences, and how they influence current habits and behaviours. CBT tries to correct these and learn alternative ways of processing information to alter the undesired behaviour and/or habits. This is done through a combination of cognitive therapy (looking at the ways and things you think) and behavioural therapy (looking at the things you do).

An individual acts in a certain way, a.k.a. gives a response, and then something happens after the response. In order for an action to be repeated in the future, what happens after the response either encourages the response by offering a reward that brings pleasure or allows an escape from a negative situation.
