Students come in all shapes and sizes and they have their own uniqueness which makes them great individuals in their own way. Some of these individuals have a disability called EBD and they need a little more help to gain control of their anger and their behaviors. Research has been conducted to come up with ways to help assist the students with EBD be able to gain control over the behaviors that need to be changed so that they can feel accomplished in life and not have these emotional outbursts control the real person within.
Cognitive Behavioral Interventions are strategies used to help student with EBD gain control of their actions and help deter their inappropriate behaviors. The interventions are designed to put the students back in control and to rely less on teachers that may give cues to help them get things back under control, in other words, it makes the student more accountable. There are various interventions that can be used and sometimes there may need to be a mixture of interventions that are needed depending on the specific need of the student. The goal of this procedure is to make the student more cognizant of their behaviors. The student must be willing to participate in order for this procedure to work. Self-monitoring allows the student to be in the driver’s seat by allowing the student to record or document their behaviors and then compare their behaviors against a standard that has already been set. They can record the results on paper or they may choose to have a verbal exchange with the teacher to compare the results of the day. Whether it was in school, the classroom or the home environment students with disabilities may exhibit various behavioral problems. Occasionally, these behaviors are hostile, aggressive, and disruptive and may impede learning for the ones who display such behaviors as well as others. In the past, Sam’s family has not been very supportive. However we know that parental feedback can greatly help assess a strategy that has been trialed with a student. By getting Sam’s parents on board with monitoring his academic and social behavior, the teacher can thoroughly assess Sam’ progress and the effectiveness of the introduced strategies, with their feedback.
One example of an effective strategy for disciplining students is Positive behavioral supports and social skills training. This can be done by schools providing interventions that help students with emotional and behavioral disorders as well as those who suffer from lack of social skills in order to significantly improve school-wide behavior and safety (NASP, 2002). Additionally, having adult mentors who work with students to help to improve self-concept and motivation to engage in appropriate behavior usually is beneficial to the students causing troubles as well as to the rest of the school environment.

A Positive Behavior Support System (PBSS) is a school-wide approach to help establish the social culture and behavioral supports that are needed for all of the children in a school to ensure the achievement of both social and academic success. Observation is important as the practitioner can find out what the child is interested in and what motivates them to learn alongside their progress and how they behave in certain situations, additionally at the same time it identifies if children need assistance within certain areas of learning or socially (DCSF, 2008). Furthermore the observations check that the child is safe, contented, healthy and developing normally within the classroom or early years setting, over time the observations can be given to parents as they show a record of progress which helps to settle the parent and feel more comfortable about their child’s education. Observations are not only constructive within learning about an individual child, they can be used to see how different groups of children behave in the same situation and how adults communicate and deal with children’s behaviour (Meggitt and Walker, 2004). Overall observations should always look at the positives of what children can complete within education and not look at the negatives and all observations should become a fundamental part of all practitioners work alongside reflection (Smidt, 2009).
