Does Detention Actually Serve A Purpose? For the longest time, detentions have had negative connotations associated with it. This is why I feel that detentions are not very effective. Often times, academic work, or silent reading are the options to choose from when being in detention. This is a problem itself. If students misbehave in class anyways, and are forced to do more work, the impacts of detention weaken and soon become meaningless to the students. Students may rebel and this leads to low production. However, if meaningful tasks such as cleaning the classroom, are given to students with behavior issues, this can make them feel important. For example, expectations should be set at the beginning of the year so both teacher and students are on the same page. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, "Positive discipline strategies are research-based procedures that focus on increasing desirable behaviors instead of simply decreasing undesirable behaviors through punishment." These changes include the use of positive reinforcement, modeling, supportive teacher-student relations, family support and assistance from a variety of educational and mental health specialists. (NASP, 2002). After continuing to research, there has been a few strategies that tend to work among many different schools and students. One example of an effective strategy for disciplining students is Positive behavioral supports and social skills training. This can be done by schools providing interventions that help students with emotional and behavioral disorders as well as those who suffer from lack of social skills in order to significantly improve school-wide behavior and safety (NASP, 2002). Additionally, having adult mentors who work with students to help to improve self-concept and motivation to engage in appropriate behavior usually is beneficial to the students causing troubles as well as to the rest of the school environment.

Therefore, when discussing why the Council of Corrective Detention does not need substantial means of physical restraint to keep its prisoners from escaping- it is crucial to realize that the prisoners are held by psychological binds. The prisoners, raised in the totalitarian regime of The Council, cannot even begin to conceive the very notion of escape. Furthermore, the inaction of the prisoners is a representation of the lack of purpose of the citizens of Anthem. One who has purpose, would find it extremely easy to escape, as proven by the example of Equality 7-2521, who virtually walked out of the Palace of Corrective Detention unscathed. The prisoners of The Palace of Corrective Detention in Anthem are trapped within themselves, and this is the fundamental reason why they do not even attempt to escape.
One in three teen delinquents are sexually assaulted by staff members during their time in juvie. Even in the place that is supposed to oppose crime takes part in it. Juvenile Detention Centers are supposed to help minors get on the right track for the rest of their life ahead of them. In 2003 The Prison Rape Elimination Act [PREA] was passed to help prevent and protect against prison rape. Though that was passed it still goes on and the superiors of the inmates are still getting away with it.

A student with a disability is not exempt from disciplinary measures, as students with can be suspended and even expelled from the school environment. More specifically, students with emotional disturbance can display maladaptive behaviors. These maladaptive behaviors can generate unsafe learning environments. More importantly, the creation of an effective behavior intervention plan (BIP) is imperative.
Lunch time for the average “nine to five” employee can be one of the most enjoyable experiences of the day. Restaurants and businesses like coffee shops realize this, so, they want to offer the best deals they can to garner their consumer’s attention. Four dollar meals and happy hour coffee deals satisfied hunger and the wallets of both the businesses and famished employees for what appears to be of little cost. Except, there is a cost and it is at the expense of nearly thousands of prisoners. Companies like Wendy’s or Starbucks benefit from labor provided by prisoners who, coincidently, get paid an average of four dollars a day.
At times it may be possible to modify the environment of the student by implementing preventive strategies. Some examples of these are teachers stating clear expectations, modifying seating arrangements, adapting the pace of instruction, avoiding exposing the student to long delays, providing a choice of activities, and allowing the student to take breaks. There are three types of alternative skill instruction. Replacement skills or behaviors must serve the exact same function as the problem behavior. More general skills alter the problem situations and help prevent the need for the problem behavior. These skills may include academic instruction if academic deficits are the main reason the student has behavioral issues. Coping and tolerance skills such as anger management are things the student learns to do when he or she is faced with difficult situations. Replacement Behaviors must serve the same function and have meaning for the student. As teachers, we are often expending more of our energy than is necessary by not taking time to implement a more comprehensive approach toward behavior management. In many cases one will need only a few of these strategies in place to create a positive behavioral support plan.
I can guarantee that punishment is not the answer. Punishment is a suggestion made by reformers (Postman, 311), but it is the absolute worst decision that can be made in our schools. When students get out of school suspension (OSS), they treat it as a vacation day and most of them use it to play video games, and they still get to make up the work they missed. A countless amount of kids in my high school did exactly that. On another side of that, punishment is giving a student attention. Not a great kind of attention, but attention nonetheless. If a student really wants attention, it won’t matter to them what kind. If something is awry in the classroom, it should be ignored. I believe every student is entitled to a safe learning environment where they can reach their full potential academically and behaviorally. Students will reach their full potential in a positive learning environment. The positive learning environment will be established from the beginning of the year providing a lasting impact on the students academic, and behavior performance throughout the entire year. The positive learning environment will be a classroom setting, which allows students to feel welcomed, safe, and important on daily basis allowing learning to occur to its fullest potential. To ensure my students are in a positive learning environment there must be a behavior management plan clearly explaining the expectations I have for my students. Throughout my behavior management plan I will explain how I plan to implement expectations so students act accordingly. My behavior management plan will be individually tailored to my students allowing me to push them to their fullest potential to by taking into consideration each student’s behavior and personal needs.
Many people might detention is a great coincidence. According to one student “The detention at my school are just sitting there doing nothing, which isn't really much.” The main point for detention is to serve as a consequence, but that seems like the job is not getting done. Students everywhere are getting detention because teachers think students are learning from their mistakes. I strongly believe that sending teens to jail is a violation of the eighth amendment. The amendment "prohibits the federal government from imposing cruel and unusual punishments". Many do and will argue that sending a juvenile to an adult court isn 't unfair or unusual because they were able to commit the crime without the regards to the harm it may bring. How can a teen even be considered an adult when they do not even have the same rights as an adult? Hypothetically thinking, place yourself into a situation where you are a minor and may have been accused and sentenced to an adult court. How would you feel then, would you still think it 's a fair punishment. Consider when you were young and you made many decisions, which you look back on and wish you hadn 't done. .... I feel that in most cases, once a student has been punished through negative reinforcement for doing wrong, the student will attempt to correct such behavior in the future to avoid punishment. In addition, positive reinforcement should be given for those students who are the majority and behave, as well as for the students who are occasional troublemakers because positive reinforcement helps show what is correct behavior in response to bad behavior.
