Method Participants The sample of participants included in the study was 30 women and 30 men all of which were entering the library. The selection of the participants was based solely off of the gender if the individual and no other factors. Any other features of the participants were not noted as they were not significant to the study. The age of the participant was trivial to the study, however, as it is a college campus library therefore, it was inferred that the participants who were chosen were within the college age, 18-23, with the occasional nontraditional student as the exception. Materials and Procedure Individual’s use of the Mitchner Library was observed upon the individual entering the second set of glass doors of the library on the main floor. What was being observed is whether the individuals were accessing the coffee cart or something more productive within the parameters of the library. To be a productive participant in this study, one had to walk into the library and pass the coffee cart going to other parts of the library for any activity not involving the coffee cart. Any activity could have been utilizing a computer, reading a book, meeting in a group, or just socializing with other students. The observers and the selector was located just …show more content…

The observation took place on a Monday afternoon at twelve-ten pm and lasted for fifty minutes. The materials that were used in this study were two pieces of paper and two pens, one for each of the observers, a computer as a distraction to the participants from the observing group, a table and three chairs that the observing group was sitting at. The participant’s actions were marked with a “P” if they were using the library in a productive manner and a “C” if they were using the library only to access the coffee
