Mayra Gutierrez “The Code of Manu” The Code of Manu was the hand guide on how Hindu should live their lives based on gender and social position in society. It is recognized as the first law giver of Hindu culture. It is a very strict religious authority that is very traditional based and very structured. Hindu’s believed if they lived up to the standards of Code of Manu then they and their souls would earn good karma and would be incarnated with world soul in the after life. It was created with the purpose of restoring and reestablishing order in the Hindu world. According to the Code of Manu, women are not allowed to be independent which by todays standards is Ludacris. The code goes into detail how women must not separate themselves from the important male figures in their lives (father, husbands, sons,) or it would bring misfortune upon her and her families. A great insight into how other cultures believed one should live and how women in specific should carry themselves. I also thought that they had double standards when it came down to it because the Code of Manu was only directed towards the women. I thought the Code of Manu was very much absurd and unfair to all of the Hindu women. I think they took it a step too far. Not expecting women to be independent is a lot to ask for because a lot of women now are being forced to raise children on their own and without any help from the male figure, so being independent nowadays is a must for a lot of women. It is also ridiculous to expect women to stay with a husband who seeks pleasure else where or is a bad human being. Another negative aspect of The Code of Manu was that women were forced to stay lean and allowed to only eat pure flowers, roots, and fruits so essentially they were asked to be vegetarian since the reading did not make any mention of any meats. On the other hand, I do agree that women should hold their husbands in high
