In the caste system of India there is very limited rights for females. There are cultural norms placed by castes on individuals. Like when people get married in India they can only get married to someone with they same caste. They can’t marry someone from a different caste. Unlike in America one can get married to anyone. The females in the caste system have to follow the norm of society and caste. Also the caste system is India is very strict, as conveyed in the article by Andre Beteille, “caste in India is perceived by millions of people today as a particularly rigid and oppressive form of inequality.” (Beteille 1990: 491). Deshpande also gives an example about female education in India, “At the all-India level, as many as 68% of SC women, 55% of OBC women, and 40% of upper-caste women report “no education” (49% of all women and 26% of all men above age 6 are illiterate)”. (Deshpande 2007: 753). Female education in India is very low compared to men who at least have some sort of higher education. These factors affect the social mobility of women in the caste system by making it very limited and almost impossible, a matter of fact that women have almost no rights at all compared to men. In America there is a lot of discrimination between groups. This restricts a lot of things for groups that are being targeted. In the class system there is discrimination between the classes, also discrimination in the classes. Class discrimination can affect an individual’s job, education or crime history. For instance in an article by Erica J. Hashimoto it states, “Regardless what the data show about the breakdown of offenses, any analysis should try to ascertain whether the overrepresentation of poor people in the system is the result of discrimination against the poor or the result of a higher rate of offending.” (Hashimoto 2011: 72). Society may think that people that are poor would most likely to commit crimes since they are in need of money. Also some people don’t want people from the low class to get money since it would bring more people to the middle class. There is a lot of completion in the class system, which causes the class discrimination. Another example by Bradley R. Schiller states that, “Thus, class discrimination is seen to be potentially as potent a force as is racial discrimination in limiting the attainments of poor youth.” (Schiller 1971: 263). Racial discrimination is a major problem in America, although people are more concerned on the racial discrimination problem, the class discrimination has the same amount of problem to people in America.
