The article I chose is called, “Coco is the movie Latinos have been waiting for” written by Raul A. Reyes. It was published on November 28, 2017 by CNN. The article talks about the film ‘Coco’ and how it connected with the audience. As well as, the positive reactions it received due to the cultural accuracy the film represented of the Mexican culture. This film is important to society because it teaches people a different perspective about Latino culture, family, and strength. Which is important because we are currently going through a time where there is a lot of discrimination towards people who have immigrated to the United States, particularly Latinos. The textbook defines cultural anthropology as,“the study of human thoughts, behavior, and lifeways that are learned rather than genetically transmitted and that are typical of groups and people”(Nanda, 2017).
The film shows the audience how Miguel (the main character) is being taught the importance of the Day of the Dead by his family. The film also shows how these traditions were being passed down from generation to generation. The film also shows the audience typical Mexican foods, customs, and rituals. Examples mentioned in the article include, “the Rivera family's ofrenda (offering) and the pan dulce (sweet bread) laid out as welcoming gifts to their ancestors. The genius of "Coco" is that it's rich with such culturally appropriate touches, from a cameo by the famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo to its depiction of spirit animals known as alebrijes.”
The second subdivision of anthropology I picked is linguistic anthropology. The reason I chose this is because in the film ‘Coco’ even though the movie is mainly in English for the audience it still includes some Spanish words and phrases, like “no manches” or “mi’jo, etc.” I believe that it includes some of these phrases because it is such a important part of both Mexican and Latino culture. It gave the movie a more authentic feel. Most importantly, they’re aren’t just any Spanish words they are words and phrases used years ago in Mexico and that are still used
today. Out of the two theories that I chose, the one that appears to be the best to analyze this article is cultural anthropology. It’s best analyzed by cultural anthropology because the article points out the things the film got right about Mexican culture. Such as their behavior and lifeways, which is what cultural anthropology is about. This article can relate to our present society and humanity as a whole because at the the end of the day we are all the same, we all have families, traditions, and cultures. It’s not necessary to be Latino to understand why this film had such positive impact. As the article states, “the themes are universal…The Mexican characters are simply people, defined by their humanity instead of their ethnicity.” Which is how people should be defined, but because of the recent remarks from the President there has been a lot of hatred and unfair assumptions made about Mexicans.
Harvest of the Empire is a valuable tool to gaining a better understanding of Latinos. This book helps people understand how varied Latino’s in the United States are. The author also helped give insight as to how Americans reacts to differences within itself. It does this by giving a description of the struggles that every Latino immigrant faced entering the United States. These points of emphasis of the book were explained thoroughly in the identification of the key points, the explanation of the intersection of race, ethnicity, and class, in addition to the overall evaluation of the book.
Sandra Cisneros “Never Marry a Mexican” and Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao are stories that reflect on the cultures in which the characters grew up in. In Never Marry, Clemencia, the narrator, reflects on her past sexual relations as well as her childhood. She speaks of her parents’ marriage and then transitions into her relationship with college professor and his son. In Oscar Wao, Yunior, the narrator, gives a second-hand retelling of Oscar’s experiences in New Jersey growing up as well as in the Dominican Republic. A person’s identity is largely influenced by their culture, this is especially the case in Hispanic cultures. The social constraints that these cultures place on social class, sexuality, and gender norms can be very detrimental to a person’s self-esteem.
Preceding her youth, in 1977, Anzaldua became a High School English teacher to Chicano students. She had requested to buy Chicano texts, but was rejected to do so. The principal of the school she worked for told her, in Anzaldua’s words: “He claimed that I was supposed to teach “American” and English literature.” She then taught the text at the risk of being fired. Anzaldua described, “Being Mexican is a state of soul – not on of mind.” All in all, the reprimanding she had to endure only made her stronger: “Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot take pride in myself.” It led to Anzaldua embracing her Mexican culture even more, contrary to shoving it aside. Alvarez demonstrates generational boundary when discussing,“The quince tradition has always been important, but there’s this retroculturation going on right now” (56). Alvarez illustrates that retroculturation is a pattern within the Hispanic community where loss of culture is present for a generation. Alvarez explains how the first generation wants to assimilate in America with their culture, while the second generation has adapted to American norms so they have lost their culture and no longer speak spanish; however, the third generation is born and bred in America and now wants to learn about their hispanic culture by learning Spanish. Teens shop at popular American malls but listen to Spanish radios to embrace diversity (56). Similarly, Munoz is confronted with the issue of generational boundaries when he admits, “I was born in 1972, a generation that learned both English and Spanish” (308). The generation before Munoz grew up speaking only Spanish which causes a barrier between one families generation to the next. Munoz speaks Spanish at home and English in public along with his other cousins who serve as translators for their household. While the second generation before Munoz have no way of following Spanish because they have already adapted to American norms and in some ways lost an important cultural aspect (308). In Michelle's paper she recaps the history of Mexicans in the United States that was not completely dealt with in either the website or the movie. Michelle points out that the Latin@s history is essential to understanding the Mexicans experience. She also wrote of the Mexican's el movemiento and how the website and movie brought about different accounts of this momentous event.
Although our society is slowly developing a more accepting attitude toward differences, several minority groups continue to suffer from cultural oppression. In her essay “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” Gloria Anzaldúa explores the challenges encountered by these groups. She especially focuses on her people, the Chicanos, and describes the difficulties she faced because of her cultural background. She argues that for many years, the dominant American culture has silenced their language. As a traditional, collectivistic cultural group, the Latino population is believed to adhere deeply to the value of familismo. (Arditti, 2006; Calzada, 2014). Comparatively, at times, this isn’t true of our busy, work devoted western culture. In western culture we think of our family in a nuclear sense made up of a: mom, dad, and siblings. Their culture believes having close connections with the entire extended family benefits the development of their children. I decided to analyze the poem English con Salsa by Gina Valdes, because I can identify myself with this poem in many different aspects. Both my parents and I were born in Mexico, but decided to move to the United States on February of 2000. With us moving here, we brought along our traditions and customs. My family has a blend of American culture with Latino culture since a few of my uncles married American women and had children. I feel that Valdes poem is about finding that “in between” feelings that are brought up when two cultures are mixed together.

To help me understand and analyze a different culture, I watched the film Selena. The film tells the life story of the famous singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Not only does it just tell personal stories from her life, it also gives insight to the Mexican-American culture. Her whole life she lived in the United States, specifically in Texas, but was Hispanic and because of that both her and her family faced more struggles than white singers on the climb to her success. Even though the film is a story about a specific person, it brought understanding into the culture in which she lived. Keeping in mind that these ideas that I drew about the Mexican-American culture is very broad and do not apply to every single person in the culture, there were very obvious differences in their culture and the one that I belong. Mexican-American culture identifies with their family rather than individualized or spiritual identities and the culture has gone through significant changes because of discrimination and the changing demographics of the United States.
Cultural anthropology has taught me a lot in such a short time. This class has been very eye opening to me and has made me think more about the different cultures around me and just how important it is to learn about them. One of the things I have learned is how religion is related to culture. Culture is behaviors of a community such as the food they make, the music they listen to, and the rituals they take part in. This can be very similar to religion because a culture is based off of their religious beliefs. Some cultures do not eat pig because it is against their religious beliefs. Some cultures listen to particular songs because it is based off of their religious beliefs. Another thing cultures relate closely to is languages. Without language
