The Cocaine Kids and Dorm Room Dealers are two very different, but yet similar books. Cocaine Kids are about a group of kids, primarily of Hispanic race, with one kid of the Black race. The kids were raised in the inner city of New York. Dorm Room Dealers are about White, middle to upper-middle class college students, who was selling drugs for their status. The purpose of this paper is to prove that there are racial disparities among drug users. There will be examples from the texts that show the different takes on the drug markets and how race plays a factor. There also will be how these experiences shape the kids drug dealing and using. The paper will conclude how all the kids either remained in the drug career or left the drug career.
In Less Than Zero, cocaine addiction tests a group of three friends against the backdrop of glamorous, 1980’s Los Angeles. I chose this film because I’ve read the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. While the movie differs quite a bit from the book, it still touches on some key points about drug use that Ellis speaks to in the novel. At the beginning of the film, Clay, Julian, and Blair have graduated high school in Beverly Hills. Clay chooses to leave and attend a prestigious university. Blair (Clay’s girlfriend) stays in Los Angeles because she is too afraid to go to school. Julian’s father gives him a large sum of money to start his own recording studio. By Thanksgiving, Clay returns to Los Angeles to find Julian and Blair sleeping together. At
Cocaine is a classified ‘Schedule II’ drug, also known as “crack”, and “coke” it is a powerful drug, and addictive stimulant well known as a psychoactive substance. That comes from a plant called coca leaf that has been around since the mid-1800s and throughout the 20th century. “In the mid-1980s, addiction to the drug was seen as exaggerated or dismissed as psychological and not addiction” (Miller, Gold, Smith, 1997, p.62). In the past, cocaine’s original use was for medical purposes as local anesthetic for surgeries. Now its usage is illegal and this drug is immersed into the body through various ways. However,...

This leads to the second school of thought on medically assisted treatment. There has been a great deal of debate about the medication used to treat Opiate addiction, methadone. Many feel that the drug methadone is simply trading one drug in for another, as the addiction to methadone is quick and almost more powerful than an opiate addiction (Nelson, 1994). The withdrawals effects are far more intense with methadone and for this reason it is a lifetime maintenance medication. Some suggest that more rehabilitative programs are needed that would address the social problems the users have to help them recover, instead of the methadone program that is viewed...

Based upon the intent of the individual drug use can be instrumental and recreational. Instrumental use occurs when a person is taking a drug, not with the intention of getting high, but with a specific socially approved goal in mind like staying alert or falling asleep. Instrumental drug use does not interfere with the duties and responsibilities. Society justifies instrumental drug use as legitimate in spite of the fact that they are available by prescription and over the counter (Levinthal, 2011)
Inappropriate drug use causes loss of responsibility, illnesses, marriage difficulties, shorter life spans, financial struggles, theft, accidents, lack of parenting, bad role models and more laws. Now I’m not saying all the problems are only do to drugs and if there was appropriate drug use our society would be perfect, no I’m saying drug use in our society has made an impact and in this case not for the better. The cost of inappropriate drug use to society is something that many overlook and others simply don’t care to recognize

In my opinion, the various theories that were formed about Freud and his construction of specific psychoanalytic concepts, due to his habitual use of cocaine, are logically viable. Given the fact that habitual cocaine use can decrease gray matter volume in the frontal lobes and parts of the temporal lobes. Specifically, in areas such as the orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and the insular cortex. The orbitofrontal cortex is responsible for decision making and goal-directed behavior. The anterior cingulate cortex is responsible for emotional distribution and attention. The insula is responsible for learning and feedback processing. Therefore, it isn't irrational to think that Freud's habitual use of cocaine had an impact on his
For my Criminal Justice major I was required to take this course, It was between Drugs and Behavior and Human Sexuality. But between Drugs and Behavior and Human Seuxality I preferred Drugs and Behavior mainly because I believe Drugs is a big part of our everyday society. When I was growing up under age children started doing drugs( Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana) In High school, but a few months ago I learned that under age kids start doing it from middle school. That made me want to learn more about Drugs and the way it affects society and an individual. I was educated about drugs in my house not necessarily in school. My parents taught me what Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana , crack and cocaine does to you and the danger or does drugs. But there are many more drugs that are accessible that my parents
