In 1918, two sisters named Genevieve and Lucille Baker were the first women to ever serve in the United States Coast Guard. The oldest man to ever serve in the Coast Guard ended up being 105 years old. Before the United States Coast Guard was transferred into Homeland Security in 2003, it was part of the Department of Transportation. The Coast Guard saves on average ten lives a day. In 2005 during Hurricane Katrina, the Coast Guard rescued about 33,000 live along the East Coast of the United States. The Pennsylvania Army National Guard is a branch of the United States Army that is mostly used today for homeland security. Although the National Guard is not active like the Reserves or Active Duty Army, they still have the same requirements and same responsibility. More than 22,000 men and women make up the Pennsylvania National Guard and Air National Guard today. They reach from state quarters at Fort Indian Town Gap in Lebanon County to about 100 comunities in the commonwealth. Like all National Guard members they share the same responsibilities. For their federal mission, they are trained and equipped to join the active forces in the time of war or a national emergency. For their state mission, they respond to the orders of the governor, protecting the lives and property of people during man made and natural disasters. Their role extends further than floods, blizzards, and riots, everyday they work to clean up the enviorment, fighting to get rid of drugs and other illegal things on the streets, and they serve as role models to generations to come. With the National Guard today you can earn extra money for college, learn job skills that you can use out of the service, and feel better about yourself by serving your hometown and country.
Unquestionably, the marines were very basic and underdeveloped in their earlier days. The USMC, or better known as the United States Marine Corps, is one of the five main branches of the United States military. The Marines Corps started out being known as the Continental Marines ("United States Marine Corps" 4). The Continental Marines were born November 10, 1775 at Tin Tavern in Pennsylvania. Due to the act of July 11, 1798, the Marines were formed in place of them under the constitution. They were first formed because of America being in debt. At the time, the United States was in a naval war with France (Metcalf 343). The marines have many allies and foes throughout the branches of military. The United States Navy is said to be the "big brother" of the U.S. Marines out of the other military branches. Most of the support that the Marines get is from this fine group of men. Early marines served as gunners, mechani...
The US Navy has founded its self with being an organization that will train and activate skilled combat naval personnel. The official mission statement taken off their web site states, “The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.” (http://www.navy.com) The Navy also prides itself on the adventurous spirit it takes to embark on a career in the navy. The slogan used in getting new recruits is “Accelerate your life“. These statements suggest that the Navy is not only clear in its purpose and design, but also dedicated to its end. The clarity of its mission is seen in the extensive training that recruits receive in boot camp and the mental focus directed by their superiors to focus on the mission statement. In recruitment, the Navy seeks young men and women, often bogged down with school and jobs that to an eighteen or nineteen year old seems to be boring and slow paced.
The trend for this literature review topic is to discuss the benefits and shortcomings of the Department of Defense and National Guard in regards to Homeland Security. There is some controversy concerning duties that the National Guard can perform in respect to Homeland Defense and Civil Support which will be appraised.
The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces whose sole purpose is to provide an assault force from the sea and to be the initial strike force of the United States Military. The USMC is currently under the Department of the Navy but is recognized as its own branch of the military. The USMC has served in every major war since the Revolutionary War in 1775. (Corps, History and Heritage-Our Purpose, 2014)
United States Merchant Marines were first established under the Coast Guard, but soon came to grow as its own organization in only a few years. Many of the first recruits came in 1938 and were apart of the Civilian Conservation Corps. These patriotic men of all ages came forward to serve in the growing U.S. Maritime Service. Young men even at the age of 16 joined to help their country in the time of need. The country at the time had 37 Official U.S. Government Recruiting Offices set up to recruit the men of all ages. Newspaper ads and the radio really helped spread the word to find the thousands of men. United States Maritime Service offices were specially placed next to Navy and Coast Guard Offices for competition. Men who went into the Navy and Coast Guard offices to sign up...
About 70 years ago on January 29th, a terrible commotion took place off Guadalcanal. Those involved in the explosion are memorialized in Arlington National Cemetery. The U.S.S. Serpens memorial is an ideal wreath laying choice for McGee Middle School’s eighth graders, as it has significantly changed the history of America.
TRAINING: We must be proficient and cross-trained in our job assignments. If we train like we operate; then we will operate like we train. Communication is crucial to a successful unit; all hands must be part of the team and share new ideas on how to make our unit a safe and effective Coast Guard small boat station.
First off, the U.S. Navy alone is the second largest branch of the military but that is not counting the marines who are coupled with the navy. The navy has 317,054 active duty personnel as of December 2013 and close to 104,650 reservists. It operates 341 ships and over 3,700 aircrafts ranging from Fighter jets such as the F-18, AWACS such as the E2-C Hawkeye, and helicopters such as the CH-46 Sea Knight. The U.S Navy operates 10 aircraft carriers actively; these carriers house over 5000 sailors for periods of 6-8 months. Overall the U.S. Navy is a force to be reckoned with no matter what country we face off with (Navy.Mil).

Military background and history has been in the world for a long time. It goes back as far as Assyrians, Spartans, Aztecs, Romans and Greek. The military purpose is mainly to protect our country and our rights and freedoms. It’s just a part of nature. No one came up with military it just happened and got stronger and stronger over the years. It first started with random people coming together protecting towns and homes and families, and eventually more and more people came together. The three main branches of the military are The Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. All three of these branches are the reason the U.S is how it is. These branches fight for our freedom, our rights, and our country!! (Robbie Hughes Interview)

In business communication, messages are conveyed using several types of media to include the internet, radio, podcast, and television. In order to convey effective messages presenters must select a medium that is appropriate for their desired objective. They must also tailor the message for the audience, which reflects an understanding of the reader's concerns, and motivations (Carrero, 2011). In the video “German coast guard-lost in translation”, the director uses a combination of techniques to illustrate the importance of language and communication. In the video, a German coast guard trainee gets an urgent message from a ship. The ships occupants speak English, and report that the ship is sinking. The German trainee responds back by saying “What are you sinking about?” The video ends with a message that says, “Improve your English”. The video makes light of a potentially dangerous situation however, it draws the audience’s attention to the real message of the video—know English! This video is a good example of a poor audio communication effort. Employees should always be well versed in a wide range of communication tasks such as expressing ideas, communicating ethically, and actively listening (p 7-8). Focusing on those basic areas can help make employees or individuals in general better, and more successful communicators.
