INTRODUCTION: With cloud computing, Amazon has enabled the usage of internet and central remote servers to maintain data and applications and created an environment where connectivity and availability is unobtrusive and prevalent. Amazon offers two options for hosting applications and databases. Amazon EC2 with Elastic Block Storage allows one to run a MySQL database server on Elastic Compute Cloud, an Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider, with Elastic Block Storage (EBS). SaaS is growing in popularity with projected sales levels to double by 2015 from the $10 billion reported in 2010 (Wikipedia, 2014). So, what exactly is SaaS by definition, and how does it distribute on a multi-tenant architecture? There are advantages and disadvantages to this service, but it does offer a few application types for businesses such as an all-in-one business package, social network applications, email capabilities, and analytics. The future trends include hybrid SaaS applications, global outlook, and possible vertical integration of SaaS. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate software as a service, along with its functions, looking towards emerging trends involved with this technological service.
To understand how cloud computing can be of value to an organization, it is important to us that we understand the cloud and its components. There are three different types of cloud computing services referred to as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). IaaS delivers cloud computing infrastructure servers, storage, network and operating systems as an on-demand service. SaaS is about software deploying over the Internet. Cloud computing is a relatively new technology that allows data to be stored, distributed and manipulated with greater ease than ever. As described by Gurjar and Rathore (2013), the “Cloud is a large pool of easily usable and accessible virtualized resources. These resources can be dynamically reconfigured to adjust to a variable load, allowing also for an optimum resource utilization” (p. 1). By moving data, documents and media to the Cloud, the potential for business efficiency and productivity increases and anyone with internet can take advantage of the benefits. As with anything, it is important to understand the risks and benefits in order to weigh whether or not moving to the Cloud is the best move for the business. Our research group has to agree that implementation of cloud computing to PCB companies can be done within the next few years because the IT industry being used by PCB companies will drastically change as the research group knows. Most or some employees may not fully understand the concepts or even grasp the basics of cloud computing in this present era but it takes time for them to learn. Personnel of PCB companies especially upper managers would expect good results and benefits both financial and technical from cloud computing in this fast moving years run by society depending on tons of IT platforms. The fundamental idea behind a virtual machine is to remove the hardware of a single computer and make it a self-contained operating environment that behaves as it is a separate computer. Essentially, the virtual machine is software that executes an application and isolates it from the actual operating system and hardware. CPU scheduling and virtual-memory techniques are used so that an operating system can create the illusion that a process has its own processor with its own (virtual) memory. The virtual machine provides the ability to share the same hardware yet run several different operating systems concurrently, as shown in Figure 2-11.
