A first-year associate is an entry-level junior attorney and is generally a recent law school graduate in the first year of law practice. The school subject that my co-op placement relates to is Careers (GLC2O1). One of the expectations from the Careers curriculum that can be demonstrated and assessed at my placement is demonstrating effective use of personal management skills. I effectively use my developed personal management skills when I stay organized, when I am accountable and responsible for my actions, and when I manage my time wisely. When I am at my placement, I demonstrate this area of learning when I write reports. I need to manage my time wisely when I’m typing up reports because I need to make sure that I finish by the end of that workday. From doing this task, I learned that it’s important to stay organized and work efficiently because when I keep my workspace neat and I work productively, I manage my time better, which allows me to get my work done faster and more effectively. If I were to continue in my placement, I would need to know how to use the computer programs designed to draft up different legal documents, such as real estate
agreements. The most important skills needed in this job are: • Oral communication skills: Lawyers constantly talk to clients on the phone and in person. At court, lawyers also need to be able to articulate their clients’ case effectively to the judge. • Document use: Lawyers use their clients’ documents to formulate cases for their clients. Lawyers also need to file many documents to the court. • Reading: Lawyers need to be able to read the documents that they are served with. They also need to read previous cases with similar circumstances to set case law. • Writing: Lawyers need to write up many different types of documents for every case that they work on. • Continuous learning: The laws in Canada are continuously evolving with changes to public opinion. Lawyers would need to continuously learn the new laws being passed. The skills that I’m good at include reading and oral communication skills. I developed my reading skills at school and my oral communication skills at school and in my community. Continuous learning, document use, and writing are examples of skills that I still need to work on. The skills that I could bring with me to another job include oral communication skills, document use, reading, writing, computer use, and thinking skills.
Law firms with 25 or fewer attorneys are usually considered small law firms. Since small laws firms out number larger law firms, the majority of all paralegals work for small firms. In small law firms 14% of paralegals work for firms that contain just one attorney, 29% in firms with two to five attorneys, 18% with six to ten attorneys, and 17% of all paralegals work in firms containing eleven to twenty-five attorneys (Miller, Urisko 23). In small firms competition between paralegals would be slim to none depending on the how many paralegals work for the firm. Sally Kane says, “With fewer employees vying for assignments, promotions and a slice of the profits, legal professionals in small law firms face less in-house competition than their big-firm counterparts” ("Small Law Firm Life - 10 Benefits of Working in a Small Law Firm - Small Law Firm Employment."). A paralegal just starting out would have the privilege of becoming familiar with many processes of law at a small firm.

Time management is not a new idea and many methods have been proposed regarding the best way to handle time management issues for business students. These suggestions can often be quite simple, such as writing down lists of things to do in order to support people in making good use of their time for work or recreational purposes. When time pressures are high, planning tasks and actions does not always lead to the completion of the work. It is in recognition of this that time management training programs have been designed, aiming to give an insight into the time required for activities, ways to make time plans, and increasing the efficiency of people by teaching them how to plan properly, how to prioritize tasks, and how to handle unexpected tasks. This is increasingly easy, particularly for students, as “books, articles, and time management training programs that were initially developed for managers have been made available to everyone”.(Claessens, Brigitte J.C. 2004).
