Miguel resides with his mother, father and grandmother. He is a 16 year-old male Latina of Mexican ethnicity. His parents are legal immigrants from Mexico but met and eventually, got married after they arrived in the United States. His mother is pregnant, which means that Miguel will soon have a sister. Miguel has been struggling academically even though he loves literature and writing. At home Miguel’s family speak Spanish but Miguel is fluent in both English and Spanish. He has been having challenges with his identity, which is the reason he identifies himself as “Chicano-American and not Latina.

I think this counseling theory would work best for Miguel because he will have the journey of growth in the things he wants and needs. Hill (2014) highlighted that Rogers’s “client-centered orientation was rooted in phenomenology, which places a strong emphasis on the experiences, feelings, values, and inner life of the client” (p. 106). Miguel will benefit from this because he will meet a therapist who will experience empathy for him and who respect and accept all his cultural values. Miguel’s stress is stemming from his relationship with his family, which is why he needs a counseling theory that will take into consideration his family background, cultural background and cultural values. Miguel needs to be in a therapeutic relationship with his therapist in order for him to become what he really wants to become. Hill (2014) found that “culture certainly fit into Rogers’s theory, however, in that being truly empathic and compassionate assumes a major interest in the person, awareness of who the person is, and an acceptance of the person” (p. 116). Which is why this counseling theory works best for Miguel because the therapist seeing him will look at him and accept him for who he is. Miguel does not need someone who will judge why he values family over going to college or why what his family feels in very important to him. He needs someone who will accept him without any
