Love at First Sight Is love at first sight real? “Scientists say we are genetically wired for the possibility of love at first sight, but why it happens to some people and not others is largely a matter of timing and self-assurance” (Bernstein 1). The timing and self-assurance for Claudio could not have been any more perfect. Once Claudio had set his eyes on Hero, he immediately fell in love. Claudio fell in love with Hero based on her beauty. Originally he had little knowledge of Hero’s personality that when Don John told him she was cheating on him, he immediately believed him. Claudio says this to Benedick right after seeing Hero after returning from war. He is saying Hero is the most wonderful lady he has ever laid eyes on. What this quote shows, is that Claudio is only attracted to her based on her looks. Claudio claims that he loves Hero but all he knows is what she looks like. “According to Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist, states, men are so visual, they see a woman who appeals to them physically, and it will trigger the romantic love system faster” (Bernstein 1). This statistic may be the reason why Claudio fell in love so quickly. Claudio wanted to marry Hero right away, but was too nervous to tell her how he truly feels. Don Pedro, the King and Claudio’s friend, offers to talk to Leonato (Hero’s father) for Claudio. “And I will break with her and with her father, And thou shalt have her” (Shakespeare 13). Don Pedro promises Claudio that he will speak to Hero’s father, Leonato, and convince him to promise Hero to Claudio. Don Pedro also promises to disguise himself as Claudio and tell Hero how Claudio feels. Claudio is a very shallow man for loving Hero just based on her beauty. He does not question whether it is true. This is most likely because Claudio never actually took the time to get to know Hero. Claudio doesn’t even bother to ask Hero, his future wife, if it’s true that she cheated. Don John is envious of his brother Don Pedro and will do anything he can to wreck his happiness. Don John states, “I am sick with displeasure to him, and whatsoever comes athwart his affection ranges evenly with mine” (Shakespeare 35). Don John is saying that he hates Claudio and will do anything to ruin his happiness. Don John does achieve his plan. Don John convinces both Claudio and Don Pedro that Hero is unfaithful towards Claudio. Claudio states, “And as I wooed for thee to obtain her, I’ll join with thee to disgrace her” (Shakespeare 58). If Claudio finds out Hero has been unfaithful towards him, he will disgrace her at their wedding. One of the Don John’s assistants had sex with Margaret (Hero’s maid) who was wearing Hero’s clothes. Claudio immediately assumed it was Hero having sex, even though he did not see her face. Instead of asking Hero if she was unfaithful towards him, he just assumed it was her. He accused her of cheating in front of everyone at the wedding. Hero was so upset that she fainted at her own wedding. Does Claudio love Hero?
