Civil Engineers: Builders of Tomorrow

Every individual has the opportunity to decide their future career path. There are various fields to choose from, such as the medical field or the business field, and each requires different qualifications and interests. One of the career fields that people choose to indulge themselves in is engineering, of which there are many different types, such as petroleum, electrical, and aerospace engineering. Although the techniques and ideology of civil engineering have been around for centuries, it continues to grow and evolve over time due to innovative and advanced technology.

Civil engineering is the planning and building of infrastructure that benefits civilization. It was developed during the Ancient Era, when the Egyptian architect Imhotep designed Egypt's first pyramid, the pyramid of Djoser. This accomplishment was so significant during that time period that Imhotep was granted the honorable title of a deity. He is accredited with being the first civil engineer for this feat, as well as for his design of the first columns. Columns were an integral part of many structures built during that era, such as the Karnak temple, which is “the largest temple complex ever built by man” (www.touregypt.net). The level of design and beauty of these temples were so high that “when the Romans first came to Egypt, they were awe struck by Egyptian temples” (www.touregypt.net). The ancient Egyptians also invented the first ramp and the lever, which enabled them to build the pyramids. The Chinese were advanced in civil engineering as well. The Great Wall is a testament to their knowledge on the subject, as they managed to design and build a structure of such monumental size and length that has managed to endure the passing of time.
