University of Minnesota, Fall 2014 My tryst with Civil Engineering began with a stint at my uncle’s company, ‘Transys Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd.’, which specializes in infrastructure construction. Over the years, my experience of working in certain areas of construction , ignited in me a deep interest and zeal to study Civil Engineering and ultimately make it my career choice. I completed my under graduation in Civil Engineering from SRM university which is a ABET , USA accredited course. Pioneering courses such as Mechanics of Solids and Strength of Materials laid the foundation in Structural Engineering. I was further intrigued by Structural Analysis and Earthquake Resistant and Special Structures courses. I therefore decided to pursue my major in Structural Engineering and embrace it as my career option. In my senior year, I had the opportunity to lead a team working on a project titled ‘Analyse and Design of a Water Supply Scheme to a Colony’. We analyzed the source of water, designed the intake structures such as RCC ground level reservoirs, RCC over head tanks, planned a distribution network and prepared comprehensive cost estimation. During the course of this project, I gained valuable experience in using professional software like STAAD.Pro, EPANET and AutoCAD. My understanding further broadened with 2 internships of 2 weeks each that I underwent during my under graduation. The first internship was at Trident and Oberoi Hotels, Hyderabad where I was engaged in the design and execution of pile foundation and the pile load testing activity. As a result, I grasped the construction sequence of bored cast in-situ pile and its respective load testing using Kentledge method. My second internship was at Airport Authority o... ... middle of paper ... ...Structures, Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures, Design of pre stressed concrete structures and bridge engineering. Your University’s brochure and department’s website suggest seasoned faculty with sophisticated research facilities. I am really interested in Dr. Arturo E. Schultz‘s research on health monitoring of transportation structures and with my knowledge in transportation structures, I wish to possibly work with him. This admission to University of Minnesota will ultimately help me accomplish my dream of becoming an entrepreneur and having a structural engineering consultancy firm, which specializes in economical and optimised structural design especially for civil infrastructure projects. Considering my sound academic knowledge and industry experience, I request you to consider my candidature for MS in Civil Engineering at your prestigious university.
The enormous responsibility that an engineer has when designing a project is often overlooked. His or her job is not only to create a design that will work under ideal conditions, but that will meet the regulations of environmental and building codes and will also survive the unpredictable forces of nature that structures are sometimes subjected to. An article in the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce, "Structures are Held up by Both Skill and Luck,"1 describes many risks involved in the designing process and the failures that can occur when small details are overlooked. In light of a recent surge of failures in the Northwest, the article says:
..., as well as the management experience, to one day open an engineering firm, an aspiration sparked by my parents who ran their own small businesses. I hope to learn how to tackle problems associated with building structures of unorthodox yet sustainable design so that, as a structural engineer, I could bring to reality art that can endure tumultuous storms and dynamic humans. I want to build structures that in turn build the future.

I have conducted my research through interview with someone familiar with construction and development as how geometry is used in these fields.
The Construction industry in the US has faced some interesting changes throughout its progression. From economic instability during the housing market crash to amazing technological advances to reduce the need for construction workers and therefore the cost associated with newly built properties in the real estate market. Beginning with the first tools ancient man used to carve their niche in the soon to be global expansion of arguably one of the oldest trades in history, construction has a rich history of trial and error, analysis and engineering that covers a very necessary skill that directly affects everyone who seeks and finds shelter, a place to work or any aspect of public works and many
I am currently working as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor with a civil engineering firm based in eastern region of United Kingdom and although I have worked with Walker Construction for a short period, I am already on my way to advance to an intermediate quantity surveyor,...
An engineer must be competent in both solving mathematical problems, such as cost, and being able to communicate with the public about projects. For example, a civil engineer may need to compute the cost of a project that was outlined in 2009. Since that time prices of property, material, and labor have all risen by more than five percent. The engineer would take the original prices and use the researched information to finalize the present day price (College in Colorado). A civil engineer also needs to have the skills to write about a project that can incorporate the successes, problems, and exciting portions of the development (College in Colorado). Having these skills honed is important throughout the entire civil engineers career.
Working on tenders for the first few weeks was enjoyable for me as it did make me use all the techniques I learned at University in every stream of Civil Engineering that had been taught to us, namely; Geotechnical, Structural, Hydrology and Transport. I realise this might not be the same everywhere and usually Civil Engineers might focus on one type of stream, but I was happy that I had the opportunity to useall of my theoretical knowledge and applied them to real‐life
I was very keen on doing some research work in this area, therefore after completing my undergraduate I joined Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, to pursue my Masters in Transportation Engineering. It was only after joining IIT Kharagpur, which is one of the most reputed and highly selective institutions of higher learning in India, that I developed an undying desire as well as confidence to pursue a career in research in the area of Pavement Engineering.
The civil engineering field is about gathering and interpreting data, being able to give technical presentations to colleagues, team work to design and build a project, projects range from the design and construction of dams, bridges, buildings, roads, and water supply systems. In most cases the works of engineers are admired and sought after. Engineers play an important role in the development and improvement of a society. Yet, like other technical and non-engineering careers the civil engineers also face issues, for example, regarding ethics, high energy building consumption, increased soil and coastal erosion, inadequate water quality, traffic congestion, and some poor infrastructures resilience to disasters. Another example is that unfortunately in the United Kingdom, the civil engineering industry is highly fragmented with 93% of companies having 14 or fewer employees which is not always a great idea, as written by John Miles in Civil Engineering Informatics. There is also a need to implement new professional and educational approaches to new challenges and new implications that are needed for the twenty-first century society. This paper will introduce and explain five different issues that civil engineers are currently facing and elaborate about how these challenges interrelate to each other.
A report on “engineering for sustainable development: Guiding principles” which was written by the Royal academy of engineering in the United Kingdom describes three types of concerns faced by the civil engineers as the sustainable development in civil engineering progresses. They
There are 25 major specialties in engineering that are recognized by professional societies. In any one of those 25 specialties, the goal of the engineer is the same. The goal is to be able to come up with a cost effective design that aids people in the tasks they face each day. Whether it be the coffee machine in the morning or the roads and highways we travel, or even the cars we travel in, it was all an idea that started with an engineer. Someone engineered each idea to make it the best solution to a problem. Even though engineer’s goals are similar, there are many different things that engineers do within their selected field of engineering. This paper will focus on the architectural field of engineering.
In today's society we can't imagine our infrastructures without the help of civil engineers. It all started with the ancient civilizations. It started off with the Egyptians and the Mayans. In this essay I will discuss the history of civil engineering ,famous engineers and the prospects of engineering in the future years.
I maintained a good academic profile during my undergraduate study, ranking among the top 6% of my graduating class. During my undergraduate study, it was the field of Transportation Engineering that caught my special interest and ever since I have strived to achieve my dream of becoming a Transportation Engineer. My interest for Transportation Engineering was sparked by courses such as Transportation Engineering and Highway Engineering in my third year. These courses introduced me to the fundamentals of traffic engineering and geometric design of roads respectively. As part of the course requirements, we undertook a mini project where we carried out traffic survey and subsequently undertook traffic analysis for a major road in Kumasi, Ghana. We also carried out parking studies and analysis, and presented our results to a panel of Lecturers. Subsequently, I majored in Transportation Engineering in my final year. To augment the theoretical knowledge gained in class, I interned at Ussuya Construction Limited (construction of spintex road 4.0km) during my long vacation, where I gained knowledge in surveying, supervision of road works amongst other
