The development of every nation hinges on the effectiveness of their transportation systems. Movement of goods, services and people to and from locations is made possible by transportation systems. The importance of effective transportation systems cannot be over-emphasized. Many countries face transportation problems and my country Ghana is no exception. A trip of about 30 minutes usually takes about an hour or more due to traffic jams. This is seriously impacting productivity and has become a topical issue in the country. The situation is the same in Uganda where I currently work. To this end, Transportation Engineers are needed to design roads/ highways that will stand the test of time, plan effective traffic management systems to reduce …show more content…
I maintained a good academic profile during my undergraduate study, ranking among the top 6% of my graduating class. During my undergraduate study, it was the field of Transportation Engineering that caught my special interest and ever since I have strived to achieve my dream of becoming a Transportation Engineer. My interest for Transportation Engineering was sparked by courses such as Transportation Engineering and Highway Engineering in my third year. These courses introduced me to the fundamentals of traffic engineering and geometric design of roads respectively. As part of the course requirements, we undertook a mini project where we carried out traffic survey and subsequently undertook traffic analysis for a major road in Kumasi, Ghana. We also carried out parking studies and analysis, and presented our results to a panel of Lecturers. Subsequently, I majored in Transportation Engineering in my final year. To augment the theoretical knowledge gained in class, I interned at Ussuya Construction Limited (construction of spintex road 4.0km) during my long vacation, where I gained knowledge in surveying, supervision of road works amongst other …show more content…
Production of crude oil is set to begin in 2020. As a result, I conducted a research under the supervision of my supervisor to determine the impact of the oil production on traffic in the area using other oil producing countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and Angola as case studies. The research was successful and the report has hence been submitted to the client. My long term objective is to start a consultancy firm particularly in the area of Transportation Systems. A master’s degree in Transportation Engineering will give me the needed experience and skills to tackle the emerging complex transportation problems in the
Roads, bridges and tunnels are objects that make transportation easier for those that own a car or use public transit. These things allow individuals to travel further for work and other important tasks. Before cars and highways, a trip that would only take an hour, could take an entire day. These innovations also connect many communities together that would not otherwise be accessible to one
Transportation is an ever-growing sector in our society today. Because of the bustling city life we have today, most of us use transportation means to get from one place to another. Generally, road transportation comprised of nearly 40% of all energy sector emissions. While road transports in 2012 were up by 68% over 1990 levels, the trend has been flat ever since 2007. This flat trend in transport activity combined with improving efficiency. Transport of passenger and freight by rail is less carbon intensive than by road (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment New Zealand 1 and 6)
I am currently working as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor with a civil engineering firm based in eastern region of United Kingdom and although I have worked with Walker Construction for a short period, I am already on my way to advance to an intermediate quantity surveyor,...
Advances in Transportation Technology William Garrison has written an article on ‘Technological Changes and Transportation Development. (Garrison, 2013)’ Transportation is more than technology since it encompasses some systems ranging from people, energy and even money (Geerlings, Lohuis, Wiegmans, & Willemsen, 2009). The advances in technology shape out lives of individuals, their landscapes and culture. Advances in technology are critical in all the aspects of life ranging from political issues, cultural perspectives of life all the way to the economic standards that people live.
Real knowledge, like everything else of the highest value, is not to be obtained easily. It must be worked for, studied for, thought for, and, more than all, it must be prayed for”
Ever since I was a child, I have had a great interest for the automotive industry. From car trivia to novel innovations, my innate passion for the automotive industry has always made me research the minutest detail of every vehicle that interested me. Since elementary school I would draw sketches of cars which incorporated technology which were unheard of at that time; novel devices such as electrochromic windshields, HUD displays, and wind turbines which would constantly re-generate electricity for the car. While growing up, my hobbies largely consisted of constructing countless Lego and Meccano sets, and repairing my mom’s 19 year-old car. In middle school, math and science were my favorite subjects: applying science and mathematics to solve real-world problems has fascinated me and I have also taken further steps to reach my goals. By the age of thirteen I devised a scaled model of a heliostat power plant, which successfully powered a light bulb. The mathematics beyond the focus points of parabolic dishes and thermodynamics was very advanced for my age, but I took up the challenge...
Post my under graduation with an Engineering degree in Information Technology from Nagpur University, I realize that I needed to gain practical working experience as a Network Engineer to gain first-hand knowledge of what the life of a Network/System Engineer entails. At my job, I especially had the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge projects and discuss ideas with senior engineers and founder of the firm. I soon realized that, although I enjoy handling the complex situations and their upcoming results, I was unsatisfied with carrying out only routine procedures under the direction of others. I wanted to be part of a team that directs the course of the project. My senior colleagues have encouraged my ambition and I feel this is the right time for pursuing my higher studies.
Traffic engineers and planners need information about traffic. They need information to design and manage road and traffic system. They use the information for planning and designing traffic facilities, selecting geometric standards, economic analysis and determination of priorities. They use this to justify warrant of traffic control devices such as signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, school and pedestrian crossings. The also use this information to study the effectiveness of introduced schemes, diagnosing given situations and finding appropriate solutions, forecasting the effects of projected strategies, calibrating and validating traffic models.
South Africa, Department of Transportation, 1996(pg 4-5) states that the main goal of any transport system is to ensure even and competent collaboration allowing social and economic stability. The author Mac Maharaj; minister of transport at the time, acknowledged that the only way of achieving the effective transport system was to draft and implement policies with relation to transport. These policies were to be based on the needs of the society that was to make use of the transport and the economy sustained by the transport system. The transport systems implemented promote development and hence the policies drafted for transportation ensure that priority for implementation of a submitted transport system projects is given to those projects that are in line with the development priorities of the country as a whole.
In 2010, I started my undergraduate degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management in the prestigious M.S. Ramaiah ...
This facts we have to consider before going to deep dive in transportation system and this facts may be change from one place to another place and from time to time.
The measure of petroleum abundance and production in Nigeria is measured by the United States. According to the statistical data and the U.S. measures, Nigeria reserves make the country the tenth petroleum-richest nation, and by far, one of the most affluent countries in Africa. In the middle of 2001 its crude oil production was averaging around 2.2 million barrels per day. Though, there is a very prominent market for offshore rigs, nearly all of Nigeria’s primary reserves are in and around the delta of the Niger river. Ever since Nigeria became independent, it is one of the few oil producing countries that can increase its oil output drastically. The g...
Transport can be classified as land, water, air, and pipeline. Among them road transport networkis taking greater share of world transport and plays a vital role for the economic development and social integration of the society in country by increasing mobility of peoples, goods and services as well as by decreasing travel time. Road transport is an important sector for economic activity, especially in developing countries, where it plays an essential role in marketing agricultural products and providing access to health, education, and agricultural inputs and extension services.
Do you ever feel like you are waiting at a red light in your car for what seems like forever? Well, that’s because “ The average person throughout their lifetime spends five years waiting in lines and queues where roughly six months of that is waiting at traffic lights”(How). Cities and towns have faced a transportation problem and they are looking for ways to tackle the issue. Transportation is a big part of one’s everyday life, and it is impossible to avoid it. Transportation plays a crucial role in the way we travel to things like school and work. Humans need transportation to get from place A to place B. There are different kinds of transportation, but the most common one in modern society is automobiles. Although transportation of automobiles is a quick way of traveling at the moment. Automobiles bring issues like health problems, air pollution, and high expenses. This is because humans always manage to take the easy way out without looking at the long-term effects that come with automobiles.
From my perspective, excellent electronic engineers are a group of gifted and imaginative talents who bravely explore and innovate, change the world with passion and innovation.
