Ancient Rome is well recognized for its potential to produce large, dense and complex network of infrastructure ranging from roads, aqueducts, bridges, baths and temples. The Romans were impressive builders, and some of the structures built by the Romans that still stand up today exhibit this. By having large infrastructure, it was one of the fundamental aspects that allowed the Roman empire to maintain its expansive territory. The Roman empire began to flourish and sparked a golden age of technological advancement.

In essence, the Cardo Maximus and Decumanus played an integral part of city planning, but also served as a central hub for economic life and business.
Furthermore, Roman grid-based city plan was replaced with urban planning by the first century B.C.E which was not planned completely in advance during the development of the Roman empire. On the other hand, by superseding grid-based plan, an urban plan was a more flexible solution resulting in a more elaborate and organic ‘plan’ that evolved over time, thus theatres, public buildings, basilicas, temples, libraries, and amphitheatres were ‘sprinkled all across the urban fabric, so that no neighbourhood was without some public monument’.

In the Roman Empire roads begin to emerge throughout the city for the military to make haste to defend its city from enemies. The roads where essential for the growth of the empire, originally for the troops they soon began to use the roads for trade goods and communicating news to its neighbors. Roman roads varied from simple roads to the better paved roads that had cuts the stone to allow water to flow though while keeping the road itself dry. Rome had so many roads at one time that it was said all roads lead to Rome.
Throughout the ages, many scholars and future-scholars have offered an explanation for the meaning of structures from the ancient years, either by their placement or construction. None has fascinated or pushed scholars for reasons than structures and art of the ancient Romans, more specifically those constructed in the years of the Pax Romana and Crisis and Decline of the Roman Empire (27 BC to 284 AD).
When Rome gained leadership over Neighboring countries and was starting to unite the cities, in about 300 B.C. Rome started to gain it’s own unique architectural culture. When Rome was expanding they build grids of roads, and with this advance Rome had a much greater ability to build massive projects. Such as Octavian (Augustus) Caesar’s Forum, aqueducts, temples, jetties, safe ports, bridges, marsh drainage and the first truly planned cities. These cities were truly planned to certain specifications and were built and optimized for certain purposes. After the Hellenistic period was nearing an end in Rome Octavian (Augustus) Caesar took control of Rome and started to start some major development programs.

It was so much more advanced than any empire that came before this time. Romans took a lot of pride in their their buildings and architecture and many of the structures they used back then are still used today, like columns and arches. The Romans used columns and arches in structures like the colosseum and the Circus Maximus, both which were buildings where gladiatorial games or chariot races were held. The Romans also saw a need for well-planned cities. They used the same basic layout as they would for an army encampment. Water would flow into a cistern through the aqueducts to be dispersed in the cities plumbing. The cities were laid out in small sections, each section having its own fountain. The wealthy citizens would have also had hot and cold running water. The Romans also made sure that the streets could accommodate heavy traffic. By allowing for extra traffic the Roman army could move through a city more easily and it allowed for future expansion.
Some would say that the Roman Empire was at it’s height during the rule of Augustus because it was a time of Pax Romana. During this time, the empire saw many advances particularly in architecture and engineering. It’s cities were connected through roads that were built for, “first and foremost moving armies and secondarily, for moving goods and people” (Cole and Symes 133).
