Service learning and civic responsibility are both acts of caring for individuals. Service learning is a learning program that helps the individuals apply their experience from the program to help them gain knowledge to apply to their own personal or educational life. On the other hand, civic responsibility is the moral obligation of being an individual. Service learning and civic responsibility have positivity impact more individuals day by day. For example, a student can help at an elementary school and tutor students in different subjects this eventually helps the child learn good reading habits as well help the individual expand knowledge about their skills. Service learning has helped more people than ever in the world. Spreading kindness and caring around with just helping a neighbor association, or help senior citizens with activities will enhance the student perceptive of them and also help the others involved. On the other hand, I believe that civic responsibility to me is being a good caring citizen in the world. For example, a student can have such a huge impact for just getting out there and voting for the next president or senator this action eventually helps out the future of the world that they serve. Community service occurs when a group of people comes to work together for the benefit of an institution. For instance, the Houston Food Bank may be a requirement for schools, but it helps aid those in need. These all tie together because they show how a group of people can learn from their experience. These have differences, though. For example, while volunteering is just doing a good deed for the community, service learning is actually learning from this experience. Volunteering is also different from community service, because volunteering is broader than community service. These do have similarities though; for instance, a lesson can be learned from both service learning and volunteering, though it is not requirement for volunteering. The functional area of service-learning is currently emerging as an acknowledged department at an institution of higher education. The theoretical roots of service learning go back to John Dewey, and the early twentieth century. However, current research on service-learning pedagogy dates back only to the early 1990’s. Best practices for the field are still being created as more and more new offices are springing up on campuses throughout the United States and institutions internationally. The reason this functional area is becoming ever popular is due to the positive impact it has on students and most all educational outcomes.
There were quite many relations made between my service learning experiences and themes addressed in the course. Some of the connections were about human self-respect, unity, and fairness. The social ties hold people together and can support the people who do not have the power to help each other. It was interesting for me to employ my skills and knowledge I learned in the classroom to serve those who need help.

Community service means to me “service before self”. This phrase has been engraved in my heart since I was a young girl. Since I was born, both of my parents have worked in the same nursing home. I was always in and out whether it was because we didn't have a babysitter that day or I just wanted to play with the facility cat. As I began growing older the in’s and out’s became hours of sitting in my mom’s office helping her file papers or with my dad running around the facility delivering toothbrushes and lotions to rooms. Summers became volunteering in the Activities Department, interacting with the elderly through crafts, painting nails, board games or just chatting away. I realized that these simplest of acts brought happiness to them, it was incredible. I realized what a difference I could make, even if it was small. These moments so early in my life are why I believe I'm so devoted and truly passionate about community service. Since, then I have done everything to immerse myself in my community and school. From volunteering at my local hospital, food bank and soup kitchen, to fundraising for polio, or traveling to Baja California with my club to start recycling and water filter programs. Following participation in an Engaged Department Institute sponsored by Campus Compact, a service-learning requirement was instituted for all majors in the department studied beginning Fall 2002. All faculty were encouraged to incorporate service-learning in their courses. A training session on service-learning was the centerpiece of a departmental retreat in January 2002. In order to develop closer relationships with community agencies, the department hosted a faculty-partnership luncheon the following fall semester. Potential community partners were invited to meet with faculty in an effort to forge new relationships with the University. In order to institutionalize service-learning, all recruitment advertisements specifically mention service-learning and all new hires are expected to include service-learning components in their courses. As a consequence of these efforts, this department has gone from teaching only a few courses with service-learning components to offering twenty five different classes (thirteen courses) by Fall 2002.
When students are doing community service, they are doing a lot of hard work. If they chose to complete hours dealing with something they might want to major in, in college, it will show the student what it will be like. It will show the student if that particular job is going to be suitable for them. It will also show the student how much and what to prepare for. There are a thousand jobs to choose from. If you complete community service hours, you get a chance to see the different options to choose from. If you think you find a career you might want to work in, you get to see if the job is really a good choice for you. It shows you if it will be too hard or even not challenging enough. You might change your mind after completing your hours. If you go to the right place to complete your hours, you might even find the job you will want to do forever. They are thus individual or collective actions aimed at addressing issues that are deemed to be of public concern. Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
Community service is an invaluable experience that everybody should have. Through community service you can help yourself by helping others.
