Representative from the Daughters of the American Revolution, I hope this letter finds you well; I would like to extend my appreciation to both yourself and, by extension, your organization for promoting such a positive message and encouraging civic engagement and service. While keeping the theme of selfless work in mind, often I find it tough to present what I dedicate my time towards, as it defeats the purpose of serving the common good by putting one person over a given population. Regardless, below is a brief description of where I direct the majority of my energy, and describes where I hope to go into the future. From a young age, the idea of civic duty and communal engagement has been instilled in every facet of my day to day life, and it follows through in my activities. I always believed in retaining the utmost professionalism and diversification of experience and …show more content…
Working with my fellow officers, this year we have created an unprecedented chapter project: rather than just supporting one organization for a finite amount of time, we have decided to pursue our own Hollis-Brookline community as our goal, working to unify the towns further, improve community spaces, and provide funding to specific groups; for example, some of NHS’ funds are going to the lunch program reform. Along with all of this, the NHS is also providing mentors for the pilot mentorship program. In coordination with an organization I started a few years ago, I designed a peer-to-peer mentorship program designed to inspire intellectual curiosity, social unity and tolerance, and civic engagement through community service called the New Hampshire Union of Students. The framework is designed to be easily adaptable for public educational institutions in New Hampshire. We are currently at planning a pilot program in January at HBHS; further information and updates will be posted at
A definitive part of my individuality is my level of intelligence. I’ve always been encouraged and driven to challenge my intellect through various opportunities in my community. Although my endeavors whether academic or artistic have provided both beneficial and detrimental outcomes in my life, I’ve been able to gain the greatest amount of esteem from my commitment to voluntary civic service. In the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program as a part of eligibility for diploma status, candidates are required to submit 200 CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service) hours performing duties that meet the criteria for each category. At first I viewed the task as your stereo-typical student with disdain and contempt for the seemingly daunting tasks. However, I never expected to have gained a true introspect and regard from my experiences in service. It is most accurate to expound that community service has required and produced a higher standard of intellect by which I have sought to attain. For me, serving my community has become a source of engaging refuge by wh...
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
... integrity. Through the Community Action Program I visited two third grade classes at the elementary school that my company sponsors. The school is sorely lacking in funds and many of the children come from homes where their families are struggling to provide them with the skills necessary to succeed in school. I taught the students for five weeks about the variety of skills one must learn to run a business and how various businesses are needed for a city to function. Each classroom was comprised entirely of children from one of two different ethnic groups, but both were from homes where English was not the first language. I believe my affinity for developing relationships with and between people will be an asset both in the classroom and in the legal profession. I look forward to rising to the challenge of constant change and growth in the ever-evolving field of law.
Volunteerism has always been the most important element of my overall involvement; my first, long-term goal reflects this. Since I entered high school, I have pursued many opportunities that exploit my desire to volunteer. I thoroughly enjoy giving my time and talents to those in need as well as the character and communication skill development with which volunteerism provides me. The skills that I have earned through my work with and for others relate directly to those required to be a successful leader. Like volunteerism, leadership, the subject of my second goal, is also something I hold close to my heart.
Kim, in the United States, grades are not the only factor in evaluating school applicants and job candidates. From Rhodes Scholar selections to college applications, excellence in other areas such as leadership, volunteer activities, sports and arts is equally important (p82-90). In American schools, students are encouraged to do volunteer work. So much so that many schools have guidelines for how much time students are expected to spend serving in the community. Children learn the value of giving from an early age. Volunteer activities is one way Americans feel a part of things and share the goal of serving and contributing to build their communities. From neighborhood watch programs to environmental issues, Americans do not wait for the government to initiate action: they take action to bring about the changes they desire. Therefore, Americans view volunteer work as a way to teach children and young adults values such as cooperation and teamwork, dedication and work ethics, equality and social justice, leadership, generosity and compassion for
Community service is something that I have always engaged. In college, I worked with chemically dependent children as both a caretaker and a mentor. After I graduated, I taught at-risk children in a community youth outreach program. To remain involved and aware of the focus of my studies during my first year of law school, I volunteered at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center teaching youth their basic legal rights. Essentially, we strove to empower kids by providing practical information about the legal system and to help them develop more favora...
...cts are unknown. Preliminary data indicates the Youth Advisory Council model, one example of the community problem-solving approach, may be a promising avenue for engaging young people. Additional longitudinal research in coming years will be crucial in developing more definitive conclusions. Anecdotally, many students find great value in the program, indicating it develops leadership skills and provides motivation for further community participation. The participants are not the only beneficiaries, however. Through thorough planning and thoughtful implementation, the sponsoring agency and broader community gain significantly from such a process. Involving young people in addressing community problems at the local level can infuse new life into agencies and communities, while helping to prepare young people to become active, engaged citizens in our democracy.

By taking an active participation in resolving some of the issues, we as individuals should all strive to set good examples by applying and adhering to socially responsible practices, such as improving the quality of lives for individuals and their families, volunteer energy and time towards improving and benefiting society.
Theater 180 addressed the quest question of how do people understand and engage in community life? Through this class I’ve gained a better understanding of what civic engagement is. At the start of this semester I had very minimal knowledge about civic engagement. As far as I knew civic engagement was just volunteering but nothing much beyond that. With this class I have learned that civic engagement is much more than just volunteer work.
Volunteerism, civic engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and making a positive impact in your community and society at large. While gaining internship and job experience can lead to community impact and social change, it’s important for us to remember that before we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to fully understand the complexity and depth of the social, environmental, or economic issue we are passionate about.
Community engagement is now a priority in many public sector agencies. Besides appealing to democratic principles, citize...
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to express about me and given an opportunity, I shall strive to channel my unbridled efforts into more productive avenues.
has more to do with character and the nature of what it is to be
As an educated professional in my community, I would like to make a contribution to society and my community. My background in hours of community service has prepared me for this and shown me its value.
