“Rule #17: Don’t be a hero” says Columbus in the film Zombieland. But little does he know how wrong about this he is, as he will be the one to break his own rule. Not just this rule but many more during the course of this movie, like “Beware of Bathrooms” and “Seatbelts”. These, and many more, are all keys to survival, but what Columbus discovers is that there’s no use in living without something to live for. In the final scene of Zombieland, Columbus has finally figured this out. He chooses to risk everything for the ‘family’ he has discovered: the girl he has fallen in love with, Wichita, her sister, Little Rock, and Tallahassee, the gun crazy man searching for Twinkies . As they enter the park, we see cheerful twinkling lights, almost Christmas-like in contrast to the desolate wasteland of the majority of the movie, with, ironically, Zombies milling around just as, pardon the pun, consumers would have been before the ‘Zombie Apocalypse’, which supports the theme of consumerism. We blindly buy without thinking, either because of a low price, lust, or simply we just want more. We are guilty of “Zombie Consumerism”. Zombie consumerism is evident in George Romeros' film, Dawn of the Dead. In this movie, a shopping mall is where the characters take refuge and becomes the setting in which the humans stay in the battle of the zombies. They gorge themselves in free food and are delighted about having almost everything at their fingertips all to themselves. It sound's perfect. They can consume anything they want and they will be okay, forever. It is ironic then when there is nothing left and they must find new sources of shelter and food and resources, or become the resources themselves.

The pages of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury were to show a plausible disaster in America, even though the events never happened; it could still come true to an extent. We can see why Mr. Bradbury made such a novel as to bring the idea of what could happen to our minds. If we stray from the knowledge seeking ways we contain in our society, we would and still might find the tides of conformity flush away our humanity. We do strive to keep this disastrous dystopia only created in our dreaded thoughts and ideas. If such a change occurred here, we would address the situation as a hazard of a great form, a situation that makes us into a type of zombie. Yes, some kind of zombie, they might be as the undead community as to always keep a fake smile. Yet, we cannot help but wonder; what makes a zombie? Is it the need for basic brain activity involvement every minute of their shallow lives? Possibly, the hidden depression that weighs their legs down gives them the sight of zombie drags? We could speculate that maybe these zombies of Fahrenheit 451 just look hungrily for love! Always to be dissatisfied by the quick and sudden luxuries. Zombies are the end to the survival of the majority population in humanity; this is why seeing Millie, firemen, and the city as zombies is okay, they prove the former statement through their actions of conformity. “Because the living dead freeze solid” (122), when word starting to get out that there were zombies, people’s first instinct was to go north. Family after family packed their belongings and ventured to campsites throughout northern Canada or wherever they felt was cold enough to escape the plague. Many people were still trying to hold on to their materialistic ways and brought “hair dryers, GameCubes, [and] laptops by the dozen” (123) with them to the campsites. These families realized very quickly that these items were not beneficial for their survival. Those that did survive the cold Canadian winters were not those who brought the most belongings, but those who had the will power to survive. As days got colder, people were forced to steal from each other, kill each other, and eventually eat each other. The only way to succeed during this brutal time was to go into this ultimate survival mode. “Eventually the sun did come out, the weather began to warm, the snow finally began to melt” and those that were left were the ones that were had the determination to survive (129).
Do you ever wonder what you would do if you were being chased by a zombie? Last October on the weekend before Halloween, I got to find out the answer to that very important question. My friends Ashley, Anna, Vikram, and I decided to go to the Great America Fright Fest. It’s a very unique event where the whole park is decorated for halloween and filled with lots of scary attractions for the entire month. It had been a sweltering day for late October filled with lots of cotton candy and rollercoasters, and as the sun sank lower into the sky the real fun began.

The absolutely stunning film, Citizen Kane (1941), is one of the world’s most famous and highly renowned films. The film contains many remarkable scenes and cinematic techniques as well as innovations. Within this well-known film, Orson Welles (director) portrays many stylistic features and fundamentals of cinematography. The scene of Charles Foster Kane and his wife, Susan, at Xanadu shows the dominance that Kane bears over people in general as well as Susan specifically. Throughout the film, Orson Welles continues to convey the message of Susan’s inferiority to Mr. Kane. Also, Welles furthers the image of how demanding Kane is of Susan and many others. Mr. Welles conveys the message that Kane has suffered a hard life, and will continue to until death.
