Clients and to God Himself. Each stages of Counseling brings about a unique plan to experience. And understanding

In essence, McMinn’s intradisciplinary integrated approach to Christian counseling is more than a “toolbox of set strategies for change” instead it is a “deep, abiding, formative work of God’s Spirit,” within the counselors lives (p 31-32). As a Christian counselor, we have the power of the Word on our sides, but so many of us do not understand how to properly apply scripture into the counseling relationship in an effective manner. In Interventions that Apply Scripture in Psychotherapy, Garzon (2005) attempts to accomplish the following; educate individuals on the various techniques one can use to apply scripture, and to encourage and stimulate God ordained creativity in the hopes to create new techniques and methods for applying God’s Word in the counseling relationship.
A difficulty that has occurred commonly is that a definition of spirituality cannot be agreed on. In a broad explanation of both religion as well as spirituality, religion constitutes the organization of faith, implementing prayer, ministry and theology. Spirituality could be viewed as a more individualized experience with a higher being, creator or idea (Walker et al., 2004, p. 70). These expressions allow a vision of client diversity that is found in all counseling classifications. While defining religion and spirituality properly seems trivial, when training counselors to properly apply the use of such variables in their therapies, a concrete explanation is imperative.
Mark R. McMinn is the author of Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christian Counseling. He has revised his book in order to expound on the topics he has presented. According to McMinn (2011), “religion can be discussed in therapy, but the power of change is found in the therapeutic relationship” (p. 3). When counselors develop trust and rapport with their clients, true change will occur. Counselors face many challenges as they incorporate religion into counseling such as “moving from two areas of competence to three, expanding definitions of training, and confronting dominating views of mental health” (McMinn, 2011, pp. 9-20). Throughout the book, McMinn (2011) discusses ways in which a counselor and counselor trainee is able to work through these challenges, such as utilizing a theoretical map to help them work toward psychological and spiritual health (p. 39-73).
The primary purpose of goal setting in contextual family therapy is to facilitate dialogue at each phase of therapy (Metcalf, 2011). Mark R. McMinn’s (2011) Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christian Counseling establish a way to bring Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality to Christian Counselors. He introduces a replica of how to integrate the three disciplines in the counseling office. McMinn (2011) contends that many challenges both professional and personal face Christian Counselors on the frontier of interdisciplinary integration. In counseling integration of Christianity into the therapeutic process has long been researched and developed. In order to get a good grasp as to what things or ideas would be a part of that process the individual must look into themselves as a therapist and decide how or what that integration process would look like for them. The difficulty in meshing Christianity and Psychology is that there will always be a degree of fealty to one side or another. According to Emmons, many studies have demonstrated that spirituality and religion are closely associated with psychological well-being but, there are also levels of spiritual maturity and an individual 's ability to forgive others to contend with. Throughout the course of this paper I will be discussing the integration process as I understand it and how it would relate to my own relationship to faith.

On the down side there are a limited number of educational programs that adequately deal with the issue of incorporating religion and spirituality in therapeutic/counseling settings. This can be attributed to the fact that counseling is based in psychology, a scientific field, which has traditionally neglected issues of a spiritual nature (Nelson, Kirk, Ane, & Serres, 2011) as well as the practice used within the United States to separate education and religion (Cashwell and Young, 2011). This then results in a significant portion of therapist and counselors who are not prepared to address the issue of spirituality and religion with their clients. One would think that with the value many Americans place on the topic of religion and spirituality that there would come a time when a client would want to address this topic during his or her session.
My previous experience in counseling encompassed three different aspects. The first is Decision Counseling which involves leading individuals in giving their lives to Christ. Next, Commissioned Lay Counseling assists in leading individuals to view life issues from a Christ-centered perspective. Lastly, Coaching consists of leading individuals to have a different view on past negative life experiences. Functioning in all three capacities has shown me the need others have for understanding and coping with difficult issues and has also shaped my desire to further my education and better equip myself with the knowledge needed to help the hurting and the lost. In our fast passed and ever changing society, personal experiences built up over time and often make life difficult to deal with over time. Everyone has their own prospective on what is important and how they will tackle various problems they face from day to day. It is the responses to our harsh environment and experiences that can often manifest into feelings such as: anxiety, resentment and possibly guilt (Crabb, 1977). It is those that have negative experiences in life that seek out the help of counselors, to better understand and change the root of those problems. Each Christian counselor must carefully research and develop a counseling model which best aligns with their education level and spiritual beliefs. The following will be a summary of the models of counseling developed by Dr. Crabb and Dr. Hawkins, addressing the strengths and weaknesses of each model. Through this theory critique a Christian counselor should be able to identify and develop a strong foundation for their counseling theory and better serve their clients while maintaining a strong spiritual foundation.
Name everything from who is involved to what, where, when and why you want to accomplish the goal. Your goal must be clear and well defined. Generalized goals are unhelpful because they don’t provide sufficient direction. Remember, you need the goals to show you the way.
