Chris McCandless was a young man with a bright future ahead of him, but he decided to drop everything and wander across the United States to find his way to Alaska. Chris had big dreams and ideals, they would unfortunately become his biggest flaws and would be his downfall. He wasn't content with his life, and viewed his way of living as too haughty and too much. He went to school, and was a stellar athlete, yet he still viewed his life as missing something. The thing he was missing was "freedom," he viewed society as wrong for forcing him and many others to have to conform, to have to go to school, to rely on others for their basic necessities. This would lead him to leave his life, and wander, to travel and fend for himself, throughout his journey he may have struggled, but he still viewed his actions as something he needed to do. I believe that Shaun Callarman's views are correct, I believe he characterized Chris well and it was his twisted views of the world that would be his undoing. …show more content…

He had this false sense of the world though, he came to hate what his parents had given him, to put it simply, he was ungrateful. Shaun said, "He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his romantic silliness." Shaun is correct, in his assumption, Chris really had no business going into Alaska. He had this false sense of freedom that he just kept thinking about, he viewed Alaska as a way to get away from society and become free. He had no real plan, and in the book it was stated by the truck driver that he didn't have the boots necessary for the snowy environment, nor did he even have the right rifle to hunt the animals. Chris was walking to Alaska with nothing but his backpack and his hopes and dreams, he eventually did make his way there, but he ended up dead in his makeshift
