The art of artifice compels the idea of false intimacy between a leader and his or her people. This essential skill acts like a play to distract its audience from the reality behind government authority. All a country wants is a leader that can talk the talk and walk the walk, even if they are faking it. In Empire of Illusion by Chris Hedges, the author exemplifies the importance of artifice in political theater and consumer culture since “Those who are best at deception succeed.” Artifice masks the true intentions of political leaders, whether it’s Napoleon’s domination over Europe, Hitler’s rise to power, or Donald Trump’s proposal against illegal immigration.
What makes artifice such an essential skill? In the excerpt from Empire of Illusion by Chris Hedges, it is argued that “the most essential skill… is artifice.” Artifice, the act of deceiving people, can be very useful when you want more power or popularity in the world. Many widely known people use artifice to stay rich, popular, and in power. However, artifice isn’t so essential that everybody needs to be a faker in order to succeed.
Many great novels such as F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby tackle the subject of passing, or being fake, which involves a character pretending to be something or someone that he or she is not. Although it takes a while for the reader to discover that Gatsby has been living a fictitious life, in order to pass for someone from a higher social class, this becomes one of the more important aspects in The Great Gatsby. Gatsby has created this magnificent lie about his past in order to be impressive, yet he still comes off as quite mysterious to the people he associates with. This may be due to the fact that Gatsby is a quiet but exceedingly generous man. Gatsby is constantly throwing parties and buying the nicest of things. This causes rumors to be constantly flying about Gatsby and his wealth.
Gatsby and Paul are of two examples of identities transforming themselves in order to fit with upper class society. Both of them seemed to fit in the upper class successfully in their own ways; Gatsby with his wealth and Paul with his imagination and talent of acting, however they both lived only an illusion and failed to pursue their dreams. What we can derive from the stories of Gatsby and Paul is that we could dream and use our imagination to go beyond ourselves but we should not let illusion get in our way pursuing our goals.
Artifice can be an artform, but also a way of covering up the truth and taking on a fake personality and life. Deceit became a very important concept throughout the novel especially in Jay Gatsby’s life. His whole life became filled with lies. He lied about how he got his wealth and about his personal life. Gatsby put up a façade for every single person who thought of him as a business man when actually he became wealthy by selling bootleg liquor.
