Lies And Deception in The Great Gatsby

“Me, I'm dishonest, and you can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for.” This quote from Johnny Depp is his most famous quote. Johnny is a very well respected Hollywood actor and has become wise over his years. This quote is full of truth and is really thought provoking. People that you know are dishonest are hard to trust to do something, but at least you know that they are not trustworthy. Someone that you believe is trustworthy may be a dishonest person and you do not know it. So you put your trust in them and they take advantage of your trust and betray you. That is not always the case, but sadly it does happen more than you would know. There are many themes in the book “The Great Gatsby”. I have decided to choose the following theme for a few solid reasons. People that are not trustworthy may be all around you. I chose to do this theme because of the multiple cases in the book proving it such as Jordan Baker cheating in a big golf tournament of hers, or when Tom Buchanan cheats on his wife Daisy. This document will show you multiple excerpts from the book that backs up the theme that I previously showed. There are many cases throughout the book where someone is dishonest to others that they know. It is definitely a motif throughout the pages of “The Great Gatsby” The first example that I am going to explain is with Jordan Baker. Jordan is a professional golfer that was in a big match for her golf career. A semi-finals match against other great competitors must have been very important for her. “At her first big golf tournament there was a row that nearly reached the papers a suggestion that she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-final round.” She d... ... middle of paper ... ...ouses back and get involved with another person. There is not a good enough reason for someone to cheat on his or her spouse under any circumstance. If they want to, then they need to end the relationship first. Or else, they just need to try to make the relationship work as it is. As you can see from the several reasons above there are many examples of people being dishonest and lying to others in the book. Proving that people who you believe you can trust may turn their back on you and hurt you. Sometimes, it is best just to keep things to yourself it is possible. Dishonesty and lying usually lead to people getting hurt and it is not worth it in the end. Thank you for taking the time to read the document and I hope that I have taught you something that you can apply to your life. Works Cited Fitzgerald, Scott. The Great Gatsby.
