How would it feel to be judged based on your appearances and not by your actions? Image in most cases has several different ways of distinguishing between beauty and the potential it takes of being able to work in a market. Well, In today's market owners are making decisions hiring based on the employees look and not analyze the employee as a whole. Most companies want someone who is emphatically able to bring in more sales and consumers. Some of the famous companies want their employee to have the necessary looks to get people to just walk in their store. By just having those special looks these employees are more likely to get the job then a person who is actually good in communication.Companies who choose to hire based on persons image can end up for discrimination or not giving everyone an equal opportunity.Hiring someone based on their qualifications and not just image can benefit the company in the long term life.

Society tends to misjudge people base on their appearances instead of their personality. As it’s shown on Cyrano de Bergerac story everyone misjudges people. Cyrano was ashamed of the way he looked, especially with his enormous nose that made him stand out. People didn’t care if Cyrano got his feelings hurt they thought he was a cruel person. Its bad when people tends to misjudge people without even knowing them but they just judge them by their looks instead of their personality. People shouldn’t be ashamed of the way they look and it shouldn’t stop them from accomplishing their goals and express their feelings towards the people they like.
The way our culture has a tendency to view other individuals by there appearance will probably never change. In some way everyone has it set in his or her mind what makes a person "perfect". These characteristics include personal appearance, wealth and intelligence. We do not always get the chance to get to know a person, but rather make assumptions. Currently television networks and stations require a set appearance and weight standards for news reporters, newscasters, weather forecaster. Our society looks at the news and weather to see not only the news and weather but the persons. They believe that physical attractiveness and pleasing body image have long been known to have marketplace advantages. Therefore many organizations set appearance standards for their employees, because they think that will project a particular image and as well as a favorable working environment. In today’s job market, there are many reasons an individual could be turned down for employment. According to Deborah Rhodes, author of “Why looks are the last bastion of discrimination”, appearance should not be one of them. Rhodes is a law professor at Stanford and holder of numerous titles for her outstanding work in legal matters. She is also the author and co-author of over 250 articles (Directory). In this article, she addresses an issue with profound impact on today’s society. She proposes that appearance discrimination should be included in anti-discrimination laws in addition to what is already accepted and legalized in today’s workplace. While it is a seemingly “silly” concern, it is actually quite valid. There has been many a concern over discrimination. That is, discrimination based on race, color, gender, and others of a similar nature in the work environment.
Many companies are using new techniques to attract modern day society. One of these techniques is revising their hiring practices. Instead of hiring based on intelligence, or skill sets, they desire employees with “the look”. Companies want people that represent their product or brand. In the article, “Going for the Look, But Risking Discrimination” by Steven Greenhouse, the store Abercrombie and Fitch hire people with a “classic American” look. However, there are many problems that can arise with this. Marshall Cohen, a senior industry analyst, claims that companies are forced to do what is necessary. I disagree with this statement. Companies that hire based on looks are risking more they assume.

While the other man looks downward, his hands in his baggy gray sweatshirt and he smells of alcohol. How people portray themselves can cause stereotypes and judgments to be formed within a blink of an eye. A person may read in the newspaper the next day on how a store was robbed and instantly think it was the suspicious looking man, the one with the baggy clothes. Why is this? Humans and people, in general, have always based their perceptions on people for what they look like. This all has to do with the media and social influences on how an image is made to be relevant.
In fact, it is the culture of motivated and empowered entrepreneurial employees that makes Nordstrom’s culture unique (Spector & McCarthy, 2012). There are less rules and procedures for Nordstrom’s sales personnel than in other retail organizations. Their sales clerks also operate with a certain level of autonomy, running their departments almost as if they are private stores (Mello, 2015). This overall strategic approach to HR keeps training costs low, and consequently the cost of turnover is also minimized. This is important, as Nordstrom’s turnover, due to the level of internal competition and entrepreneurialism this type of retail strategy requires, is one of the highest in its market (Mello, 2015). The high turnover rate makes HR planning an important factor in ensuring a stable workforce that can create and maintain ongoing customer relationships (Spector & McCarthy, 2012).
Everyone in today’s society has pressure put on themselves because of the way they look. No matter if you are the most gorgeous/handsome person on this planet, that specific person has their own faults with their image. Financial success now a days puts pressure on others image. For instance, for women to work at “Twin Peaks,” “Hooters,” “Bone Daddy’s,” “Bombshells,” or any of the other sports bars, you either have to have one of the following, “Boobs, butt, pretty face, or a flat stomach.” If you are hired with one or the other, let’s face it… you will get talked about and or made fun of. As for men, it is pretty much the same. Just as the new “Tallywackers” that opened up in Dallas. People (women mostly) that go into the restaurant, get to choose their server before they sit down. To others that is completely unfair, because their body image depends on their pay that night. With how bad people are getting teased/bullied, changing to the opposite sex, getting plastic surgery and etc. no one seems to have tried to do anything about any of it. It is probably because we have all kinds of different ways with technology to make someone feel beautiful and good about themselves, that it does not need to be fixed. With professional appearance, it could higher your chances of getting hired, keeping your job, good customer service, and most importantly a positive outlook on yourself.
Employment discrimination legislation has evolved to include race, disabilities, sexual harassment of either gender, and age. In lieu of this evolution and an increasing trend toward equality for all individuals in the workplace, the time has come for the protective reach of employment discrimination law to cover ugliness. While the proposal may cause titters at first, evidence exists that discrimination based on looks (or physical appearance) occurs in the workplace. An investigation was conducted by ABC’s 20/20 news program in 1994 that sent two men and two women into the workplace to secure the same jobs (Sessions 1). The individuals were coached to act in a similar manner during the interviews and took with them resumes with matching education and experience. The only difference was that one of the men and one of the women was superior in physical attraction to their counterpart. The results demonstrate whether intentional or not, looks discrimination does play a role in the employment process “In five cases out of five, the more attractive woman got the job; in three chances out of three, the more attractive man was hired” (Sessions 1).
