Long ago, people created the examination system as a way to help their posterities to understand and learn knowledge and skills that will eventually benefit them in the future. In the new era, however, examinations are often regarded as tools to measure a student’s intelligence. In some countries, and specifically like China, examinations sometimes even become the only measurement of one’s success. Receiving education is the process to always call back to one’s heart and reflect one’s own desires on the society. If people regard exams and education as ways to gain something other than knowledge, this kind of exam and education system might develop in a twisted way, and this is actually what happens in China. Formed in several centuries ago, examination system in China, which focuses much more on standard tests and scores, has maintained almost the same traditions until now. Same to learning, if one studies passively but not by his own willingness, then he or she maybe already potentially failed. Only if people realize the real reason why they need to study, they could learn the most helpful thing to themselves. In an article I read written on July 13, 2014 by Ken Bain “Flummoxed by Failure-or Focused?” he discussed how there are two types of students the “helpless” student who think they aren 't smart enough and the “mastery” or “growth” students who will try everything before they cave in and how students the “hopeless” students think their intelligence is fixed. Also in an interview with Ken Bain conducted by the Project Information Literacy on October 10, 2012 , Mr. Bain discussed more of his view on learning like that you don 't learn from your experiences, but about thinking about your experience which is a process he called “deep learning”. He also discusses issues with strategic learner who basically only perform for the high grade and don 't ask questions after they get their answer. Standardized tests are used to evaluate a student’s performance, however, tests do not take external factors into account. This already means that tests are often inaccurate methods of measuring a students academic potential. One of the reasons why standardized tests are used is for measuring a child’s scholastic performance. But how accurately do they do this? A standardized test is made up of consistent questions and procedures for scoring and administration. They are always made according to identical rules so the procedures are the same for everybody who takes the tests. They come in many forms: on paper, on computer, questionnaires, etc. These tests are very contentious because many people have different opinions about them. Some critics feel that the tests help parents and teachers act as guides to assist students on expanding their knowledge in a particular subject. They are also needed to enter Ivy- League schools which further explains why international schools and schools in the United States take them. However, most do argue that these tests do not take into consideration a child’s traits and what the child can give.
