Should the Gaokao Regional Policy Be Abolished?

“What? It cannot be true,” I said. Before I transferred to the Ohio University, I was a college student in the Tianjin Normal University with mathematic major. My classmate and roommate Xiaolin Zhou, a student who comes from Shandong Provenience, has a higher admission score which also can be called as Gaokao’s score than me, and the difference between the score is more than one hundred points out of the seven hundred and fifty points. But, the result is that we were in the same university and enjoyed the same education resource. I was shocked by this reality. To be honest, I thought I was so lucky that I was born in a municipality. However, when I saw her disappointed face, I realized that the problem of whether the regional protection policy should be used in the Gaokao has become a huge controversy in China.

According to the Museum of Learning (2010), “the National Higher Education Entrance Examination, or commonly known as “Gao Kao”, is an academic examination held annually in the mainland of the People’s Republic of China, and this examination is a prerequisite for entrance into almost all higher education institutions at the undergraduate level” (“Museum of Learning,” 2010). It is also an exam famous for its difficulty and the large number of participants. Just because of the large number of participants and the vast territory, we have the regional protection policy to protect the students from some areas. As showed in the Chronicle of Higher Education (2010), people who are the residents of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing or the special area such like Tibet and Xinjiang can enter a good university with a lower score (“Chronicle of Higher Edu...

...st universities just because we don’t like our cities more crowded. As a solution, we can make some change of the immigration policy. For instance, we can make a policy that, after the students graduate, they cannot stay here if they cannot find a job within one year.

From what we have talked above, the regional protection policy should not be used in the Gaokao because it will lead to some problems such as unfair competition, losing the chances to change rural students’ lives, cheating with the identities, and the Gaokao immigration. We cannot deny that make an absolute fair examination is not easy for China because the large number of the participants and the variety areas. However, we need try our best to make it become a fair examination because every Chinese know that too many people have already paid too much effort on it, and they deserve the equity.
