We are said to be now in the age of dark cinema with films like The Dark Night, The Avengers, and Gone Girl and many more, that all take the path of using dark cinematography as a way to also highlight the dark tone of the movies plot. In a film like Children of Men creating a dark setting helps aid to the plot of the world in its current state of despair. The cinematography of this films has a clear continuity style often found in many of the directors films, the movie features many long takes. The director of Children of Men is Alfonso Cuaron who also co wrote the film. He has directed, written, and produced many films which include A little Princess, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Gravity, and Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. Many directors have a specific style that is constant in their films that they begin to become know for. For instance director and writer Quentin Tarantino known for dark action packed dramas, he hasn't been apart of a film that didn't have blood being spilled at some point. Same goes for director Alfonso Cuaron many of his films use very saturated and dark coloring to play off the dark plot of the film and Children of Men is no
exception.
Not a single individual is able to watch a Burton film without noticing the lighting effects and how it significantly contributes to the tone and mood of the entire film. In the movie Edward Scissorhands, one might be overwhelmed with the burst of extravagant colors in the scenery. Indeed this cinematic technique, high key, wholly influences the viewers perception and impression of the town. One can conclude that even though flamboyancy pervades the town, iniquity lurks in all directions and hypocrisy governs the minds of its inhabitants. Irony is harnessed in this film. How can an effulgent town harbor wickedness and Edward with a chilling and gothic complexion radiate innocence and righteousness? Burton uses these opposing conceptions brought about by the contrast of lighting to convey the message that materialism has been ingrained in the mentality of society (at least in the neighborhood in which Burton lived in the past), thus yearning for th...
The film I will focus on is the Men of Atalissa by Kassie Bracken. The significant limit of the rights that these disabled men faced was the right of a livable wage. The film depicted how the men were dedicated workers and wanted a good life for themselves. However, because of being disabled, they were not paid a fair wage for their work. The people in the town would refer to them as the boys (Bracken, 2014). This illustrated that they were devalued and seen as less important. In addition, when they were seen as the boys it could have been an excuse to devalue their work and pay them less. I choose this as most significant because all the men were promised a lavish retirement if they worked at the turkey farm. They strived for this lifestyle,
In effect all the techniques mentioned above portray a society of individuals who are weary of the world they live in. They are rejects who lead a pitiful existence in a wasteland called earth because they are not fit enough to go the out-world colonies. Suppressing their own natural instincts for the sake of physically surviving they really the walking dead. Scientific progress conducted not for the best interests of humanity but for the best interests of business has effectively brought about the progressive degradation of society. By exploiting and destroying the natural world human can no more find solace or beauty so as to recuperate their weary minds and rekindle their dying spirits. In summary the techniques that are unique to film such as camera, lighting, costuming, colour and location works in conjunction with common literary techniques such as visual symbolism, irony and characterisation to effectively convey the relationship between humanity and nature.
In any film, lighting and colour are very important, as film is mainly a visual form of media. In film A (By Dustin Hoffmann), the colours are very naturalistic. They make use of pastel colours and scenic shots. It has a sort of fantasy world quality.
Films today often have large budgets dedicated toward capturing and keeping viewers’ attention in any way possible. Films like these include large actions pieces, over-the-top characters, and long elaborate openings that serve this purpose. The film All the President’s Men achieves the same goal without having any of the before mentioned cinematic techniques. Instead, All the President’s Men proves that sometimes, less is more. Screenwriter William Goldman utilizes his own different techniques that keep the story grounded while also keeping viewers interested throughout the film. These techniques include simple opening and closing credits, a subtle use of music, use of real news footage, and a proper balance of drama and intensity. Goldman’s brilliant use of these techniques paid off and lead him to win several screenwriting awards for his work.
A person does not usually pay attention to cinematic techniques used in a film because one does not think of the details in the movie. These details are a key part in creating the mood and tone. Tim Burton uses similar techniques in his movies to create a suspenseful mood. Many instances of low key lighting were used to create a suspenseful mood. Along with low key lighting, low and high camera angles were used to show authority and importance. Lastly, non-diegetic sound was used to create a dramatic effect while still making the mood suspenseful.
The Bolshevik Revolution was a defining turning point in Russian history. This overall revolution consisted of two individual revolutions in 1917 which resulted in the overthrow of the Tsarist government and the formation of a socialist society led by Vladimir Lenin’s radical Bolsheviks. For a moment with such enormous weight like the Bolshevik Revolution, there will be various interpretations on the true results of that moment and the meaning and value of these results. The film Man with a Movie Camera deals with the results of the Bolshevik Revolution and the early Soviet Society it birthed as it utilizes footage of one day in this early Soviet Union, thus making it worthy of examination. In the film Man With a Movie Camera, Vertov impressively
Justice has began to commence for many of Canada’s Indigenous people now that considerably one of our Nation’s darkest secrets has been spilled. The Residential School system was a collection of 132 church-run, government-funded boarding schools that was legally required for all Indigenous Canadian children. Canadian Residential Schools ran up until 1996 and, for decades, the secrets from within the walls of the institutions have been hidden. But now, the truth has finally come to light.

Alfonso Cuaron is seen through the American public as the creator and mastermind behind Gravity, he is one of the most talented foreign directors worldwide but is never truly recognized for his other amazing works. Cuaron is the Dante Alighieri of long shots in editing, he is often praised through his attention to detail, and the interaction between a character his environment within the realms of each shot. Along with his partner in crime Emmanuel Lubezki, the cinematographer, they are well acclaimed free-thinkers and celebrities in the realm of fantasy and science fiction. In 2006 their collaboration created one of the most underrated films of all time, and one which is still all too relevant to the world we live in today. Children of Men
generate moods, and have great psychological affect. This is just as true for the very first series of shots for the film, and perhaps more important since these first shots will give the audience the initial feeling of the film, and set a tone for the picture. The first shot is highly dramatic in its lighting method, and the audience is drawn in immediately to one single detail. A man begins revealing the details of a tragic incident that befell his daughter. We don’t see who he is talking to. There is a spotlight directly above the man, and this is pretty much 95% of the light used. This really lights up the top of his head, which is bald, but there is no hot spot or reflective element which is good because reflection here would be aesthetically displeasing. The lighting causes dark areas under the man’s eyes, which emphasize the passion and eventually the hatred of what he is talking about. The scene is lit so that the background is completely black, so that the only thing we can see is the man. Even though this is logically unrealistic, the stylistic decision to light in this manner is warranted, since this or any other good film draws heavily upon our expectations and imagination to convey a message or meaning. We as audience accept the unrealistic elements, if they assist in making the story ...
Should the American government manipulate information to the public in order to help support war efforts? The film Flags of Our Fathers by Clint Eastwood (2006) shows that after a long grueling battle on the island of Iwo Jima in Japan, U.S. troops take control of the island and the American Flag is risen on Mount Suribachi. This symbolizes a massive milestone in the war but it also misguides the American people towards thinking the war was over. This event becomes very controversial because the military ordered the flag to be risen again in order to have a picture taken of the men raising the flag and the photo was staged. The issue with this, is that since the war continued for another month, 3 of the men who originally rose the flag died
Horror movies force us to confront our many fears and phobias, chief among them, our fear of the dark. Even their titles reflect this: Night of the Living Dead, Fright Night, Dracula, Prince of Darkness, Dark Waters. Because movies, by their very nature, must be viewed in the dark, this is an element that is highly exploited and capitalized upon by movie-maker...
During the movie Meet the Parents, the main character Greg Focker wants to propose to his girlfriend Pam Byrnes. Before he proposes he wants to meet her parents first. During a dinner scene in the film Greg tries his best to please Pam’s father, Jack. Greg makes jokes about an urn placed at the top of the fireplace and is soon told it is the ashes of Jack’s mother. Greg attempts to make light of the situation by bringing out the champagne he had bought. While unscrewing the top it pops off and hits the urn making the urn fall on the wood floor and shatter into pieces. According to Thomas C. Foster, when a failed meal occurs it can cause negative outcomes. This statement is true based on Meet the Parents because Jack continues to dislike Greg
