I am writing about the use of lighting in the opening scene of The Godfather, (1). The
photography of The Godfather as an entire film is very planned and used specifically to
generate moods, and have great psychological affect. This is just as true for the very first series of shots for the film, and perhaps more important since these first shots will give the audience the initial feeling of the film, and set a tone for the picture. The first shot is highly dramatic in its lighting method, and the audience is drawn in immediately to one single detail. A man begins revealing the details of a tragic incident that befell his daughter. We don’t see who he is talking to. There is a spotlight directly above the man, and this is pretty much 95% of the light used. This really lights up the top of his head, which is bald, but there is no hot spot or reflective element which is good because reflection here would be aesthetically displeasing. The lighting causes dark areas under the man’s eyes, which emphasize the passion and eventually the hatred of what he is talking about. The scene is lit so that the background is completely black, so that the only thing we can see is the man. Even though this is logically unrealistic, the stylistic decision to light in this manner is warranted, since this or any other good film draws heavily upon our expectations and imagination to convey a message or meaning. In the movie Edward Scissorhands, a lot of different cinematic techniques are used. This movie mostly focuses on lighting, usually using darker low-key lighting throughout most of the film to create a darker, creepy tone. Low-key lighting is used mostly in scenes with Edward scissorhands in them, not as much with the girl. A good example of these low-key lighting scenes are the beginning ones, when the girl first enters Edward’s castle. The atmosphere inside is dark and creepy, adding to the already mysterious and dark tone of the movie. Another example of a scene with low-key lighting is the very beginning of the credits screen. The words are displayed in white with the rest of the background as a dark and evil setting. This already gives
Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, uses high key and low key lighting. For example, Peg’s town is flooded with high key lighting in order to make the outside seem joyful and peaceful. The outside may look cheery and bring, but most of the people living there were not the most pleasant people. The women gossip and create rumors; the men are rude and conceited. He used low key lighting in order to make the audience feel anxious about the upcoming events. An example would be when Peg walked up to the top floor of the mansion and noticed that someone was sitting in the corner. Edward’s shadow may have given him a frightening appearance, as he is a ‘man’ with scissors for hands. But Edward was a kind and caring gentleman. In conclusion, he used reverse lighting to add an irreplaceable, distinctive quality to his movies.

In the United States, approximately 10 million people over the age of 50 have osteoporosis and an additional 34 million have osteopenia, which is characterized by reduced bone mass [10]. This disease can be defined as low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which is characterized by bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures, especially of the spine and hip. The risk of bone fracture from osteoporosis increases with age and it is approximated that 50% of those affected are women [6]. As the population ages and life expectancy increases, the number of osteoporosis cases will likely increase, making the disease a major public health burden in the western world.
Osteoporosis is one of the main types of bone diseases that is more commonly developed in the adult years of men and women, but can also affect younger aged people too. This disease contributes to “…decrease bone mass, increased skeletal fragility, and an increased risk of fractures…” (Caple & Schub. 2014). Bones are constantly being replaced by new bone hence it is living tissue. Osteoporosis eventually occurs when new bone has failed to be developed. In Canada, “1.5 million Canadians 40 years of age or older (10%) reported having been diagnosed with osteoporosis, of which, women were 4 times more likely to report having osteoporosis than men” (“What is the impact,” 2010). Women are at greater risk then men because the hormone changes in women can affect the bone density. Estrogen is essential for bone density but after menopause the levels fall resulting in bone loss. On the other hand, the cause for men is still unknown. However, testosterone: the male hormone helps to keep bones healthy. Even though men still produce the male hormone at an old age, there is still a risk of osteoporosis because the levels have dropped. Occasionally bone loss occurs without any cause, and later realizing that it is a silent theif when you ultimately develop symptoms (“Osteoporosis – Review,” 2014). In most instances osteoporosis is preventable, even though it is not reversible and harmful disease.

The Use of lighting by the Coen Brothers not only enhances the mood, but it also show the personalities of the characters. During the film, Moss is often only half lit, to show that he is a conflicted and morally complex character.
The lighting in this movie is very effective. It helps to establish the characters very well. The audience is helping in distinguishing the bad and the good characters through the lighting. The movie overall is very stylized. There are some other strange lighting patterns brought out by Hype Williams, but by far the most effective lighting patterns are ones that help to characterize the main players in the film.

We usually reach maximum bone mass at about 30 years old, and in the years following, the rate of bone degeneration increases as the rate of bone formation decreases. A dramatic increase in bone loss starts after menopause when estrogen levels decrease for women, and after testosterone levels decrease in men; effects are seen around age 50 for women and later on for men. All throughout The Maltese Falcon the camera angles change with the character. Camera angles and lighting affected the mood of the scene; scenes in which contained more mystery had additional shade and distortion of the lenses and hard lighting to create ominous shadows, among the characters. By creating depth in the scene and tilting the camera angle so that images were portrait, gave the impression of more events were taking place then actually were. Lighting was abnormal with neon lighting in the background and dull lamp light in the foreground, which in turn created it unable to get a clear picture of the situation. As well as background and foreground lighting, there was lighting that would only highlight specific objects, such as the Maltese Falcon, when it was being unwrapped. In some scenes camera angle would be slightly higher than the characters or shown through the characters eyes, the lighting would be underneath the character, not allowing the audience to see their full facial expressions. Lighting and camera angles played a huge role in creating the mystery in Film Noir.

Bone remodeling is defined as where bone tissue is removed from the skeleton and new bone tissue is formed. Osteoporosis occurs when osteoclast cells are more active than osteoblast cells. This results in a decreased bone mineral density, which determines bone strength. Bone mineral density decreases rapidly in postmenopausal women as the estrogen level decreases, which helps prevent bone loss. Spongy bone is often lost first, then followed by compact bone.
Italian Neorealism is a cinematic style born out of the economic and political strife following the Second World War in Italy (Smith, 2013). The style generally depicts the hardships of average working-class people who are struggling due to forces outside of their control (Smith, 2013). The main goal of these films is not to embellish reality, but instead accurately depict life in Italy at this time. Often times sets are not used, as “location shooting” is utilized. This allows for the debris filled, hardship struck streets to become a huge part of the makeup of the films. Italian Neorealism films also generally have some stylistic tendencies. A documentary style shooting method is commonly used; that is one camera at eye level of the characters. There is typically no variation in the angles of the shots. Furthermore, editing and lighting are mostly avoided, allowing for a simplistic yet accurate take on reality.
