A problem that I believe is becoming a bigger issue now, than ever is the underdevelopment of childhood literacy. In the 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress reading test, sixty percent of fourth graders across the United States are not reading at grade level. Since 2013, the numbers of under developed reading skills in young children have only increased. In 2015, the same test came back but the number of students not meeting their benchmark was sixty-six percent, which is two-thirds of children set up for failure at such a young age. I think to solve this problem action needs to be taken in not only making reading a fun experience for students, but also providing young students with books to read at their own grade level. A
number of students claim that they don't read at home, simply because of the fact that they don’t have books to read. I believe that one step we could possibly take to dwindling these numbers could be having a book drive, as well as setting up book drop locations. These book drop locations could easily be at any public library, where people could anonymously drop books that they’re no longer in need of and they would later be donated to young students at local public schools. A volunteer from this program would be assigned to pick up the books every week, and distribute them to schools in need of books for their students. This is so near and dear to my heart, because my grandmother is a learning disability intervention teacher for students grade fourth through sixth. She has taught me how important teaching children to read at such a young age, really is. My sister has been diagnosed with a Developmental Disorder, which means she comprehends things at a slower rate than other children her age. Though she, as well as others cannot control her disability, her Intervention teachers have helped so much in her learning experience, and I know my family is beyond grateful for that. All of these things combined, as well as my love for the youth, has influenced me to want to become an early childhood development teacher that is also specialized in disabilities. If I can teach children at a young age, not only how to read, but the importance of reading then I will have fulfilled my dream of changing a student’s life for the better. Knowing that they will have the same opportunities as other children, as well as having a child excited to go home and read a book on their own time will be so rewarding in itself.
America’s children have found increasing difficulty with school. I previously have mentioned, in prior reflection essays, just how important literacy is for a person’s future. Notice how I didn’t say “student’s” future? Literacy fluency effects several aspects of life, not only academically speaking. Ultimately, the literacy level of a child can directly affect their future as an adult. The whole point of Torgesen’s article “Catch Them Before They Fall” is about preventing students with literacy deficits from slipping through the cracks without the best possible, research-based interventions.
Visualize sitting in a classroom of seven year old children, addressed individually to read a passage aloud from within their reading book. When called upon, a child realizing the words are not right and make no sense, the racing heart, the twitching nerves, a flooding of thoughts wondering how to respond, what to do? Alas, act up and be a clown is an outlet for the embarrassment, illustrated by the warm, flushed face. The consequence of being sent to the office appears a better resolve, when compared to anyone realizing the words cannot be read. A secret kept to oneself. What a horrible feeling for a child to unknowingly bear and not understand how to convey. Does one merely give up, or does one rise up and overcome? Martin Luther King, Jr. once articulated, “Our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change”
Throughout my childhood, the idea of having a college education was greatly stressed. As a result, it was my duty as the next generational child, to excel in my studies and achieve a life of prosperity and success. Learning became the basic foundation of my growth. Therefore, my youth was overtaken by many hours spent reading and writing what was known to be correct "Standard" English. I first found this to be a great shortcoming, but as I grew older, I began to realize the many rewards acquired by having the ability to be literate.
With such high numbers of adolescents falling below basic in reading, illiteracy is a battle that must be fought head on. The largest dilemma with the struggle is the number of variations that cause adolescents to become reluctant, unmotivated or struggling readers. Fortunately, a large number of strategies exist to encourage and strengthen readers of all ages, proving that adolescence is not a time to give up on faltering students. Rather, it is a time to evaluate and intervene in an effort to turn a reluctant reader into an avid one (or near enough). Ultimately, educators must learn to properly assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses (Curtis, 2009) and pair them with the proper intervention techniques. If one method does not work, countless others exist to take its place.
The need for basic literacy skills is vital in order for our nation to continue to operate successfully. With approximately 5 million students, graduating below the National Standard for Literacy and unable to read, we must take a look at the curriculum and teaching techniques to assess whether the current systems need to be revised to better assure ALL students are successful. (Adolescent Literacy: A Policy Research Belief p. 1) The issue begins first with the definition of “Literacy”, and the fact that there are several aspects of literacy which are not currently included in the curriculum. Another issue is the “old” standards which are in place do not support the level of diversity which is now seen in many school systems. Then comes the issue of funding for schools and many schools in better neighborhoods obtain the highest level of private, and public funding and therefore are able to provide the higher level of education. However, in “The Literacy Education for All, Results for the Nation (LEARN) Act”, Senator Patty Murray states, “Research also shows that low income children are less likely to have access to high quality, literacy rich environments. These same children perform 40% lower on assessments of literacy achievement even before they start kindergarten.” (Murray) So, whose responsibility is it to ensure the success of the upcoming generations? Will the Federal Government step in to create a better system for the generations to come? The causes of reading difficulties often arise because of learning disabilities such as dyslexia, poor preparation before entering school, no value for literacy, low school attendance, insufficient reading instruction, and/or even the way students were taught to read in the early grades. Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Writing is a form of communication that has changed over the years, whether that is the way it is used or the meaning it has for some people. In the generation that I grew up in, writing has been around in many different ways, such as texting or instant messaging friends. I remember using Facebook at an early age and communicating with my friends and family through a different form of writing. Compared to my elders, the way they were taught and the way they used their writing has changed immensely. Since I grew up in a newer generation than them, my writing experience has been partially different in a good way. My literacy narrative will reflect that difference.

A comprehensive approach to literacy instruction is when reading and writing are integrated. This happens by connecting reading, writing, comprehension, and good children’s literature. A comprehensive approach to literacy should focus on the many different aspects of reading and writing in order to improve literacy instruction. Thus came the advent of education’s increased focus on literacy and numeracy, accountability and academic standards. These high standards, according to Dumas (2000), are the most significant trend in schools today.
The program works with more than 100 schools in seven states. The program is geared toward students from low-income families. The statistics for children’s literacy in the United States are astonishing. “In 2011, just thirty-four percent of the nation’s fourth graders in public school could read proficiently” (National Center for Education Statistics, 2011). Emotional literacy is to recognize, and express emotions in an appropriate way. Understanding not just our emotions, but others as well. First, I think it’s important to provide a trusting environment where children can feel that they are be able to talk openly about their feelings. In my opinion, emotional literacy is important for young children because it helps them recognize and understand where those feelings are coming from, and they will learn how to deal with them. I also think it’s important because through emotional literacy, children will develop a sense of empathy, and I feel that it’s important to teach empathy at a young age.
