Few things in this world stand out and have a life changing impact to significantly alter the course of one’s own self. The value that the Chief Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) provided was one in which will never be paralleled again. Walking in to a completely new world of opportunity and responsibility as a brand new Chief Petty Officer, there is no better introduction to the depth and magnitude of what is now expected from me as well as my peers and our collective role as a Chiefs Mess. Transitioning from a task driven, managerial minded FS1 to the leader I am now prepared to be, this has truly changed my career path and life in general and I can justly say that I am now ready to be “The Chief”. While looking inside is sometimes difficult, I was ready and excited for the opportunity to learn and grow as a person. The CPOA afforded me the opportunity to take an unbiased look at my own strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement and development. Through programs like the DiSC survey, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and even the Stress Management workshop, the inward glace of myself offered me a wealth of valuable information not otherwise available to just anybody. Figuring out where I excel and where I might seek additional support and guidance will truly be an invaluable tool to use in the fleet and ultimately supporting and growing my junior members in their own career climb and molding them to become the future leaders of our …show more content…
The Wellness aspect of CPOA was one to certainly learn and grow from, using the classes on nutrition and group workout routines as a great foundation to live a much more healthy and active lifestyle. As mentioned before, understanding why and how are important to not only myself, but this new generation of Coasties, and being able to provide the resources and firsthand knowledge of what I’ve learned is something I would have never achieved elsewhere. While far from the epitome of health and fitness, I can at least be an example for all the less enthusiastic members as well as my family in learning to live happier and much healthier and ultimately ensure that I will be around for years to come both in and out of the
The Mission of the Army Logistics Management College (ALMC), now referred to as the Army Logistics University (ALU) at Fort Lee, VA is to enhance the readiness and sustainability of United States Forces through training, education, consulting and research in Logistics, Acquisition and Operations Research Systems Analysis. In joint with the ALU, the Sustainment Center of Excellence (SCoE) runs eight different versions of battalion and brigade-level pre-command branch or technically focused courses. Five of them are conducted at ALU; one of those five course that ALU is responsible for offering is the resident 2-week Sustainment Pre-Command Course (SPCC). The SPCC was once taught at each individual Army branch school. In 1993, ALU was given the mission to train all multifunctional logisticians.
While many of these changes include the advancements in technology and ingenuity, nothing can replace the rich history, proud culture, and bright future of the NCO Corps. Though several additional factors doubtlessly play roles in the strength and continuity of the corps, I do not believe any have contributed to the extent of the solid rank structure, efficient training network, and passionate NCO Creed. Even though this time honored tradition has change a lot over the years (For the good and the bad) it is still a important part of our service rich heritage that is staying alive because of you and your fellow PCPO’s. A lot of E-7s will not even take two month out of their busy lives to learn about what it really means to be a Chief.

Sergeants of Marines are considered the backbone of the Corps, but a steady rise of fearful NCO’s, is now a common trend. Not ones that fear the terrors of war, violence, or bloodshed, but Marines that fear the pen on a piece of paper, both in combat as well as in Garrison. These are Sergeants that wait for the answer and accept what their being told without debate as opposed to taking split second moves that could be the lifesaving moments needed for their team in a real world scenario. The first step to correcting this problem is at the NCO level. Decisiveness is a leadership trait that is detrimental to the noncommissioned officers reputation within the Marine Corps. By encouraging outside the box thinking and making decisions with full confidence, Marines gain what is needed to ultimately decide when it matters, and most importantly influence junior marines by reinforcing this leadership trait.
Sir, I am honored by the privilege to once again serve in 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT). Over of the last 30 days, I had an opportunity to reconnect, and reflect on the current state of the Brigade. The 4th ABCT has a rich history of success and glory. It is my goal to put in place the systems and practices for this great organization to exceed all past and present accomplishments. As a result of my assessment, I identified three areas of focus that will improve our organization: a unit vision, a change in organizational culture and climate, and building organizational teams. I have no doubt that with the implementation of these three areas of focus, I will be the transformational leader that 4th ABCT needs as we prepare for the upcoming National Training Center (NTC) rotation and tackle the task of the Regionally Aligned Forces (RAF) mission.

As our forefathers before us stated, ‘‘No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army (“The NCO Creed writing by SFC Earle Brigham and Jimmie Jakes Sr”). These words to Noncommissioned Officer should inspire us to the fullest with pride, honor, and integrity. The NCO creed should mean much more than just words whenever we attend a NCO’s school. For most of us this is what our creed has become because we learn to narrate or recite. The military from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard has an overabundance of NCOs who fall under their pay grade of E-5, E-6 and etc. Yet somehow there still not enough leaders. I believe that the largest problem afflicting the military today is our lack of competent leaders, ineffective leader development, and how we influence our subordinates under us who are becoming leaders.
Whilst in the military I worked as a Flight Operations Assistant (FOA). My main task was working with air crew to provide them with information for their daily flights and submitting their flight plans. I was also a trade trainer, training less experienced members of the team which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have served operational tours in Iraq, Cyprus, Bosnia and the Falkland Islands so I am used to frequently working under pressure. I feel my military career has given me many transferable skills to be a good ODP, such as: practical skills, the ability to concentrate for long periods of time, problem solving, team work and the ability to act calmly under pressure. Professionals in the United States Marine Corps stand apart from others engaged in particular careers in the civilian world.While many vocations contain some of the characteristics of professional, a lot of careers do not include all of the elements necessary to distinguish themselves as being as close to a professional as a marine. Professionalism grows depending on the time and service they have in the Marine Corps. A professional has specialized knowledge and skill which can only be acquired through prolonged education and experience. Such skill and experience form the basis of objective standards of professional competence that separate the practicing professional from their peers and measure the competence of such professional. This professional knowledge must also be intellectual in nature.
In this report, I will reflect on my professional development throughout this module, from when I started in September, to now. According to Beausaert et al. (2011), ‘the art of self-evaluation is an integral element of reflection and involves critical insight into understanding one 's strengths and limitations’. Therefore, my aim is to identify my learning needs and to recognise my personal skills and capabilities, as well as identifying areas of my skill set that need to be refreshed or extended to stand out in the competitive job market. By doing this, I hope to demonstrate knowledge of the skills that I have gained during this module.
Leaders require essential leadership skills to effectively lead. The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Academy teaches those essential skills to enhance leadership ability out in the fleet. During my time at the CPO Academy, I acquired vital knowledge and skills in leadership throughout the classes I took which I will be taking back to the unit. One class that had a significant impact was the Facilitative Leadership class which gave me the tools to effectively run a meeting. In addition, the Change Management class provided me with the skills necessary to support Command Policy and get crew buy-in. Lastly, the Stress Management class imparted me with knowledge on how to deal with stress and mitigate it.
