Role of a Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) A Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) is typically a physician or a nurse who reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). The CMIO works with the CIO as a team to develop strategies to help implement new technology for health care staff. This role is less information technology oriented, as it focuses more on overcoming potential barriers. Along with overcoming barriers, this role also provides education and feedback to the staff. In 2002, a Certified Professional in Health Information Systems (CPHIMS) certification exam was created for this role. There are two different requirements to get into this position. The first one requires a bachelor’s degree and five years of information management experience, with two years being specifically in health care. The second one requires a graduate degree with three years of information management experience, with two years being specifically in health care (Hoyt & Yoshihasi, 2014). In 2014, EHR vendors said eight hospitals had attested to MU Stage 2, and Cerner was used twice as much as CPSI (Gregg, 2014). Concerning Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), CPSI System had the broadest reach in community hospitals; nevertheless, the software was missing functionality and usability (KLSA Enterprises, 2010, p. 6). Therefore, CPSI’s CPOE was significantly below the market-average due to low physician satisfaction (KLAS Enterprises, 2010, p. 6). KLAS Enterprises (2010, p. 2) reported Cerner clients were happier the more they adopted CPOE.

CareGroup was formed on the basis of three major Massachusetts hospitals; Beth Israel, Deaconess, and Mount Auburn (McFarlan, F. Warren, and Robert D. Austin, pg.1). After a surprising merger of Mass General and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, all three hospitals in CareGroup suffered great financial losses (McFarlan, F. Warren, and Robert D. Austin, pg.2). Due to the multi-million dollar financial losses, CareGroup felt they needed a change, which is when they added Halamka to their team, naming him their CIO (McFarlan, F. Warren, and Robert D. Austin, pg.3). Being in a financial state of duress, it is undoubtedly crucial for a new CIO to have the technical skills and knowledge needed to manage a health care facility. In reference to this point, Halamka had stated, “…I know all the technologies, I program in 12 languages, and I’ve written books on Unix system administration. I’m a doctor, so I understand the clinical domain and the technical requirements” (McFarlan, F. Warren, and Robert D. Austin, pg.3).
