Role of a Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) A Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) is typically a physician or a nurse who reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). The CMIO works with the CIO as a team to develop strategies to help implement new technology for health care staff. This role is less information technology oriented, as it focuses more on overcoming potential barriers. Along with overcoming barriers, this role also provides education and feedback to the staff. In 2002, a Certified Professional in Health Information Systems (CPHIMS) certification exam was created for this role. There are two different requirements to get into this position. The first one requires a bachelor’s degree and five years of information management experience, with two years being specifically in health care. The second one requires a graduate degree with three years of information management experience, with two years being specifically in health care (Hoyt & Yoshihasi, 2014).
