Chief Bromden in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Chief Bromden is half American Indian. His father was a chief named Tee Ah Millatoona, which means The-pine-that-stands-tallest-on-the-mountain. That is why he is able to use the title chief. He took on his mother's last name of Bromden. He grew up in the Columbian gorge. The chief is massive and tall and would appear very intimidating and threatening to those who meet him. He was committed to the hospital and has been there for longer than anyone else, for over 15 years.
He was put in there after World War two. The chief was an electrician's assistant in a training camp before the army shipped him off to Germany. It is probably due to working with electronics and the added strain of going to war that has led the chief to have such an unhealthy preoccupation with electronics.
The chief has led everyone in the hospital, both staff and patients to believe he is deaf and dumb. As a young child he was always ignored, by fellow students and adults, this could have been because he was so strange looking, being half American Indian and appearing so big and menacing yet being quite shy. "I had to keep acting deaf if I wanted to hear at all." He felt rejected by his peers throughout life and so as an adult decided that as people acted like he was invisible he might as well disappear, "It wasn't me that started acting deaf, it was people that first started acting like I was too dumb to hear or see or say anything at all." So pretending to be deaf and dumb was probably a defence mechanism. For him, his silence is also extremely potent. As he is able to hear everything that went on in the meetings where the doctors and nurses discuss the future of the patients. The doctors and nurses don't hesitate to say anything in front of him because they think he can't hear. "They don't bother not talking out loud about their hate secrets when I'm nearby because they think I'm deaf and dumb."
The chief sees things in literal metaphors, he sees McMurphy as being really big in size because he is so brave (and big in spirit).
Chief Bromden is a six foot seven tall Native American (half) who feels very small and weak even though by physical description, he is very big and strong. Chief does not have enough self-confidence and he is not independent. That is what makes him so small and weak. When Randle McMurphy, the new inmate in the asylum comes in, Chief is reminded of what his father used to be: strong, independent, confident and big. "He talks a little the way papa used to, voice loud and full of hell " (16) McMurphy helps Chief gains back his self-confidence and teaches him to be independent.
McMurphy saw that in the men how they didn’t believe in themselves and they trusted that Nurse Ratched cared for their best intentions. Seeing how insecure the men on the ward were, he started to boost their confidence, “ ‘By God Chief,’ he said, ‘it appears to me you grown ten inches since that fishing trip. And load almighty, look at the size of that foot of yours; big as a flatcar!’ ” (Kesey 267). Chief after getting away from the ward for a day and having his freedom he ‘grew’. Furthermore the Chief grew in confidence because he didn’t have the Nurse controlling him, thus showing how McMurphy helped bring back the men’s confidence. Not only did McMurphy give the men self-confidence he gave them courage to stand up Nurse Ratched, “Harding read the paper, then tore it up and threw the pieces at her. She flinched and raised her hand to protect the bruised side of her face from the paper. ‘Lady, I think you're full of so much bullshit,’ Harding told her,” (Kesey 320). The Nurse used to have complete tyrannical authority over the men of the ward, but after McMurphy came she is weak and impotent. McMurphy showed the men how don’t just have to idly sit there and take the blows from Nurse Ratched. They are humans and they can stand up for
Fred Wright, Lauren's instructor for EN 132 (Life, Language, Literature), comments, "English 132 is an introduction to English studies, in which students learn about various areas in the discipline from linguistics to the study of popular culture. For the literature and literary criticism section of the course, students read a canonical work of literature and what scholars have said about the work over the years. This year, students read One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey, a classic of American literature which dates from the 1960s counterculture. Popularized in a film version starring Jack Nicholson, which the class also watched in order to discuss film studies and adaptation, the novel became notable for its sympathetic portrayal of the mentally ill. For an essay about the novel, students were asked to choose a critical approach (such as feminist, formalist, psychological, and so forth) and interpret the novel using that approach, while also considering how their interpretation fit into the ongoing scholarly dialogue about the work. Lauren chose the challenge of applying a Marxist approach to One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. Not only did she learn about critical approaches and how to apply one to a text, she wrote an excellent essay, which will help other readers understand the text better. In fact, if John Clark Pratt or another editor ever want to update the 1996 Viking Critical Library edition of the novel, then he or she might want to include Lauren's essay in the next edition!"

2. Mediation allow parties to be involved, they want them to see how everything will go. Some cons about mediation is it can cost a lot of money it is very expensive. A lot of people think maybe one day it will be mandatory. The concerns are that using arbitration will keep companies confidential and in cases like this it will be bad for the company and its business.
A hero is considered to be any man noted for courage or nobility of Purpose; especially, one who has risked or sacrificed his life. In Ken Kesey's novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the reader can see how McMurphy is a prime example of a hero. McMurphy's strength embodies a heroic devotion to the other acutes on the ward.
...ion. In Alternative dispute resolution: The litigator's handbook (p. 2). Chicago, IL: American Bar Association, Section of Litigation.
Arbitration is an alternative to litigation between two parties in dispute. This method of dispute resolution is used by opposing parties outside a court of law. In Arbitration, both parties agree to a neutral panel, called an arbitration, who hears their dispute and decide the outcome. Arbitration uses an adversarial system much like litigation and offers a binding decision from the partly of their choice. Organizations in a Collective Agreement benefit by using arbitration instead of litigation because of the greater degree of control it give the parties, the ability for the parties appoint their own arbiter(s) and is generally a cost-effective approach compared to litigation.

In the following rounds of mediation simulations enabled me to interchange my positon from mediators to disputants and put myself in others’ shoes. This exercise demanded another set of skills, such as neutrality and impartiality, and the mediator had to be physically and mentally equipped for the enduring processes of opening, private caucus meetings, conclusion, and follow-ups. One must be extremely cautious as you must strictly abide by the rules of confidentiality and no conflict of interests, as you are also not expected to act as a legal advisor for both sides.
Twigs surrounded the building with fragments of deceased worms embedded within them. The structure of a nest was dangling on a tree, on the verge of collapsing. Minute leaves glue the twigs together, allowing the fragile structure to remain intact. In the middle of this structure was to be found the smallest of schools. Inside was a defeated writer who had been forced to settle to teaching Creative Writing.
The Army Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process describes techniques to describe and encourage managers to develop and utilize innovative ways of resolving disputes. Techniques used in Alternative Dispute Resolution may be used to prevent dispute, resolve them at earlier stages, or settle them before a formal legal process is executed. The Army as organization understands that disputes will take place. This is not the problem. The ADR process helps determine how to deal with the problem. Should one engage in confrontation? That could result in a bitter dispute, thus damaging a relationship further. A favorable outcome would include the parties reaching an agreement to the dispute.
