The story begins in a village near the marshes where a young boy named Pip lives. Because his parents are dead, he lives with his sister, Mrs. Joe Gargery and her husband Joe who’s a blacksmith and Pip’s trusted friend. Pip doesn’t have much of a future, he’s destined to become Joe’s apprentice and eventually a blacksmith. Then, Pip meets a convict out on the marshes. It seems like nothing important, despite it being frightening, but this meeting will change his life forever.
The convict asks him to bring some food. Pip, fearing for his life, steals some food from his house, brings them to the convict and doesn’t see him again.
Later, a stranger will show up in the Three Jolly Bargemen. He’ll scare Pip a little because he reminds him of the convict. Pip thinks he might be in danger, but instead, the stranger gives him two one-pound notes. At that time, not much connection is shown between the notes and the convict on the marshes, but later discoveries indicate that it was the convict that had sent the man with the notes.
Suddenly, there’s a twist of fate. Pip’s invited to play at Miss Havisham’s. Miss Havisham is a wealthy old lady who lives uptown in a large, gloomy house. Next to the house is an old, decrepit brewery and a garden overrun with weeds, both remnants of better times. The interior of the house isn’t much looked after either. The drapes are closed as to block as much sunlight as possible; the only light inside is that of candles, and cobwebs decorate the furniture.
Miss Havisham turns out to be an elderly woman in an old bridal dress that was once white, but has now faded to pale yellow. Most objects in the house were once white actually, but had also faded. And a remarkable fact was that all the clocks were stopped exactly at 8.40 A.M. Pip later finds out that Miss Havisham was abandoned by her fiancé at the altar at that time and straight after that, she had all the clocks stopped.
Miss Havisham was heartbroken and turned into a bitter, cold woman. She stayed indoors, stopping the clocks and leaving everything the way it was on the day she was to be married. She stayed in the darkness, not seeing any sun or anything outside her mansion called Satis House. Satis stood for "enough". As if to imply that any who resides in the house won’t need anything else.

When people hear country music, they think of “Rednecks” or “Hillbillies” out on the country side singing songs about losing their wife, dog, best friend or any other sad subject. This is not true and it showed by becoming one of the most popular music forms of the 20th century. Country music is one of the best-selling genres after rock and pop.
Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a two room house that was built by his dad, Vernon. Elvis loved his parents dearly and had a very close relationship with his mom, Gladys. He also had a profound faith in God. The family had little money, but Elvis’s parents did their best to provide for him. His childhood, the height of his fame, and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death made him the icon of the 1950’s that he is today.
According to The Nashville Sound, markers that include “rural origins, stylized sets, seemingly spontaneous performance, accessible performers, and heartfelt songs can characterize country music’s authenticity” (13). The foundations of what country music has originated from are incorporated within these markers and are used to separate the real from the fake. Early country music was a means of coping with a life of work and worries; it also brought communities of the impoverished together in fellowship. The establishment of these markers glimpses into the culture and realities of many country music artists before their fame. Take for instance a family sitting huddled together on a porch on a cool summer evening listening to a family member play the banjo while another sings along. Everyone is enjoying and living in that moment and all worries are far from mind. Country music made people feel at ease and comfortable, it brought people back to their memories of the good old days. This is the way country music sh...
‘Havisham’ is a poem about a woman (based on the character from Charles Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’ of the same name) who lives alone, often confining herself to one room and wallowing in self-pity because she was apparently jilted at the alter by her scheming fiancé. ‘Havisham’ has been unable to move on from this trauma and is trapped in the past. Her isolation has caused her to become slightly mad.
Decriminalizing prostitution tolerates an industry that destroys and abuses people, particularly women. Keeping prostitution illegal in America has created an environment in which sex workers are subjected to violence, illness, mockery, and discrimination. Prostitutes are people and they have lives too. Banning prostitution will continue the allowance of hard-working citizens to be cheated out of their money his/her money through taxes. Just because some people are uncomfortable with prostitution does not mean that they have to partake in it. Today it’s illegal to prostitute, tomorrow it may be illegal to sell your own ideas and inventions. It’s time to stand up and stop letting the government control us
Amy and her husband, Nick, appear to have a wonderful marriage. Right from the start, it is obvious that they both truly love each other. Life has a terribly way of testing this love, and working to see just how hard one will go to secure it. Regardless of falling upon hard times, they did not allow this to hinder their relationship. Both were unemployed due to the recession, but they still had each other. That was enough for the time being, but it would not always be sufficient. Amy’s started to form worry towards the relationship when she was forced to move from her home to Missouri. Nick’s mother had become ill with breast cancer, and they moved back to his home to be closer to the family. Watching a loved one die from a terminal illness is enough to hinder any relationship.
Meanwhile, in Great Expectations, Miss Havisham's house is often made to sound depressing, old, and lonely. Many of the objects within the house had not been touched or moved in many years. Cobwebs were clearly visible as well as an abundance of dust, and even the wedding dress which Miss Havisham constantly wore had turned yellow with age.9
“The scars from mental cruelty can be as deep and long-lasting as the wounds from punches and slaps, but are often not as obvious,” (Bancroft, Why Does He Do That?) shows the poisonous and toxic relationship between Nick Dunne and wife Amy Elliot-Dunne. In the novel, Gone Girl, it soon becomes rather obvious that they both having a pernicious influence on each other, to the point, that they sought each other out no matter the condition. In the modern world, obsession has been an extremely common theme. Gone Girl shows Amy, who prides herself on being preeminent due to being Amazing Amy, and how her self-righteousness reveals more about the man Nick truly is, misogynist and violent. Therefore, though they are like a cat and mouse nipping at each other, they still need each other to live despite Amy’s manipulation and Nick’s abusiveness. They are a beautifully crafted cocktail of venom and deception.
Based on her impulsive actions, and sudden fear of being abandoned by someone, she shows signs of borderline personality disorder. She also experienced unstable relationships with people (spoiler alert) like the man she was friends with and eventually killing him, framing him as a rapist and emotional abuser. Amy Dunne also experienced symptoms of Munchausen Syndrome. This syndrome is a mental disorder where a person repeatedly acts as if he/she is physically/mentally ill. In Gone girl, this is an ongoing issue for Amy Dunne. (spoiler alert) Not only does she paint the image that she is dead to her husband and family, but creating a new identity, and causing harm to herself and others. I rate this film a 4 out of 4 stars. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and kept me guessing even after seeing the
Individuals who suffer from BPD have problems being able to regulate emotions and thoughts, are impulsive with their behaviors, and tend to carry unstable relationships with other people. Those who suffer from BPD may also experience suicidal behaviors and completed suicides. In the movie Amy had a calendar with sticky notes, two of which were marked “Kill self?” on different dates. And although she didn’t go through with either one, the possibility was very much in her realm of doing so. Another symptom of hers that ties in well with her BPD, is Narcissistic Personality Disorder. One of the symptoms from this disorder should be obvious, a need for admiration which has to be evident to the individual from their spouse. They tend to lack empathy for others and are often described as self-centered and manipulative. Amy over time developed a maladaptive style of functioning in the world that ultimately caused her to not only harm herself but also other people as well. Due to her NPD, she had a powerful sense of entitlement, meaning she was able to rationalize each action she made, even as misconstrued as it may be to the average person, and act as if it was perfectly normal. Amy’s deceitfulness was very apparent throughout the movie. From every calculated note left for the annual scavenger hunt, to the crime scene she orchestrated, down to every action she took to
In order to make more money Pip’s uncle sends Pip to a psychotic old lady’s house named Mrs. Havisham. Mrs. Havisham is a mean and nasty character who constantly bickers at Pip and tells him of his unimportance. Pip continues to be mild mannered and respectful to Mrs. Havisham yet he begins to see that he will never get ahead in life just being nice. Mrs. Havisham uses Pip as sort of a guinea pig to take out her passion of revenge against men. She does this by using her daughter, Estella to torment Pip.
In the sheltered, cut-off village, the young Pip has not experienced society; however, it still manages to reach him. The first experience is a chance encounter with an escaped convict, who scares Pip into stealing some food and drink (Hobsbaum 223). Pip has no way of knowing, but the convict will turn out to be one of the most im...
