Are you weird, smart or impatient? Nancy Lublin says these are the characteristics of an entrepreneur. As a child she was known for doing things differently. She was never good at following rules or focusing on one thing. Nancy is considered one of the most successful nonprofit leaders of the world. She says the key is the people she works with, they make her an extraordinary leader. (Lublin 1)
She sees something that needs to be done and makes it happen. (Lublin 1) She started law school and overnight had a successful nonprofit business. She has only continued to inspire and amaze everyone she crosses paths with. How does a story like that start?
The Beginning
Nancy Lublin always knew she was different. She grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a local lawyer. Growing up she always knew she wanted to become a lawyer also. She lived a sheltered life and even attended the same preschool her father did when he was a child. (McCulley, Nancy Lublin of Dress For Success: Change-maker, Woman Entrepreneur) Her first activist campaign was in preschool. A classmate decided purple was a “boy color” and demanded that he should have all the purple crayons. Purple was her favorite color and she believed they should be for everyone. She gathered all of the purple-ish colored crayons and ran around the room yelling “I’ve got the purple!” She said it was liberating and she has continued to speak up for what is right since. Education
She did well in school and got into Brown University where she studied political science which later turned into feminist theory. That was the starting point for Nancy’s career. She received a scholarship ...

... The advice Nancy would offer to someone going into a leadership position for the first time is to listen. “People have two ears and one mouth. That really should be a clue. They need to listen more.” (Lublin 1)
Leadership is the ability to influence employees to voluntarily pursue organizational goals. (Kinicki and Williams) Nancy has a proven record of successfully leading her not-for-profits by inspiring and influencing others to want to be involved and work passionately towards organizational objectives. According to Nancy, creativity, innovation, inspiration and unbridled passion can make a lot happen from a little. (Lublin 3) Nancy Lublin has fully embraced these positive leadership qualities and is a shining star who inspires and leads others to individually and collectively make significant, meaningful impacts towards positive social change.
she was the first person to go through university, and she smacked an insane dictator.
After graduating from Loyola University Chicago, she generated the idea of Jewelry Box and She gave a start to her career by opening her own business for the first time.
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
In 1991, she landed a job as a part-time legal commentator for Court TV. In 1992, she had a contract with the Today Show as their legal correspondent. She managed to land “hard-to-get” interviews with some of the most famous people in the world including Mike Tyson. Those interviews are what led to her getting national fame. She also gained respect for her reporting on such trials as O.J. Simpson and Lorena Bobbit.
A leader needs to rely on their gut feeling or as Bennis refers to this as “inner voices.” The leader needs to be confident in themselves. Bennis’ previous points suggest knowing oneself and their world to give them that confidence to make decisions. A true leader relies on everything they have learned to set their vision.
She was known to be a shy, but found her calling of helping others when her brother got into an accident when she was a little girl. Her family encouraged her she would be an excellent teacher because she was very patient. Following her families advice at fifteen years old she decided to open her own school that was free to all who attended. (McHugh, 2015, p. 3). She was very successful as the community saw her passion to make a difference and the increased in students attending and decided to provide four thousand dollars to build a new school and when it opened they replaced her with a man and paid him double the salary. She resigned as a teacher and continued her journey as she moved to D.C. where she became the first women to work in the U.S. patent office and to earn an equal amount as a man (Cooperstein, 2012, p.
Warren Bennis’s leadership theories from On Becoming a Leader serve as a guide to understanding the qualities and strategies that great leaders often exemplify. Classic leaders like Hillary Clinton have vision, passion, and integrity. These three things are the basic ingredients that Bennis proposes that most great leaders have in common. These are all aspects of leadership that allow people to better understand themselves and the world around them. In Hillary’s case, it is because of her determination to take the lead on different social issues around the world as a prominent figurehead that has allowed me to take a closer look into how she uses these basic leadership ingredients in her own practices....
The CIPD (2013) define leadership as “the capacity to influence people, by means of personal attributes and/or behaviours, to achieve a common goal”.
Catarina Fake had many of the qualities that great entrepreneurs possess. She started out with an idea, but it quickly turned a different direction than she and her business partners had expected. Immediately, she saw and opportunity and used this situation to start Flickr. Many people would get frustrated when their initial idea did not go as planned, but as an entrepreneur would, Catarina adapted to the situation. The ability to thrive in adversity is a trait that sets great entrepreneurs apart.
“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” — Douglas MacArthur (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kevinkruse/2012/10/16/quotes-on-leadership/)
Michelle worked very hard in high school and in college, to become a lawyer. She worked as an associate/assistant in Sidley, Austin that branches with the Chicago Firm. Michelle was very successful in everything position she worked in.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Leadership is a process of effective influence, which maximizes the efforts of the people, towards the achievement of a goal. Leaders might be of many different kinds and we can say that each field of our existence in a civil society demands specific leaders. It involves guiding the team towards the target and communicating it to the people. Then inspiring, motivating and empowering them to achieve organisational goals. According to James Macgregor Burns, Leadership is “the reciprocal process of mobilizing by persons with certain motives and values, various economic, political and other resources in a context of competition and conflict, in order to realize goals independently or mutually held by both leaders and followers” (James Macgregor Burns, Leadership. New York: Harper & Row, 1978, p. 425). Developing Leadership qualities requires anyone to know his/her positives and negatives and a continuous effort to develop his/her skills, attitude, and knowledge. Business leaders are required to possess a different qualities than those of political and community leaders. Successful business leaders have often demonstrated the following qualities;
Successful entrepreneurs have a clear image of what they want their future to be like. They hold a clear picture of the direction the company should take and have a clear plan of how they will make their vision a reality (9 essential traits of successful entrepreneurs, 2013)
We learned a lot of things in this course, but I think the most important lesson I learned is that it’s not easy to be an entrepreneur. I was surprised to hear in the first class that 80% of startups fail, but after reading The Art of Start and E-myth Revisited I understood why this happens more often than one might expects. Some people start their own businesses for the wrong reason and some start with wrong mindset. I’ve always thought that if someone has a brilliant business idea and hardworking they will succeed and grow their business. However, now I know that there are many things to consider before starting any business. In fact, there are many strategies that an entrepreneur could follow to achieve success, such as know your customers, work “on” the business, and how
