A community is where a group of people live in the same place and at times share things in common. Today there are different types of communities such as traditional and modern. An example of a traditional community today is an Amish community. There are two types of communities which are discussed in the film The Village. The two types that are seen are Gemeinschaft which is similar to a traditional community and Gesellschaft is similar to a modern community. In a Gemeinschaft the community residences are close; therefore, the members have an intimate relationship with each other. Also in a Gemeinschaft, before doing any action instead of thinking how it will effect the member individually, they think on how their action will effect on the …show more content…
There are other characteristics of a Gemeinschaft community such as small and isolated. In the film it is seen that this aspect is seen with the few houses built plus the amount of civilians. The other example of isolation is seen in the type of location in which the village is created. The location of the village is in the woods; therefore, it is isolated from the “real world” which is the modern community. The clue of isolation was given when the members were not allowed to go into the woods and to travel to go into town. When one of the characters went into town, it was discovered that no one in the town knows about the existence of the village. Another characteristic of a Gemeinschaft community is that they have a homogenous culture, they share the same traditions, rituals, and beliefs. In The Village the aspect of a homogenous culture is seen through out the film when all the members believe in one idea that is the color red stands for evil or …show more content…
It is also based on a modern society like today. In the film The Village the aspects of Gesellschaft is seen at the end when one of the characters Ivy, travels to the town. No one other than the elders in the village had a true idea about the town. Near the end, Ivy traveled to the town and us, the viewers discovered that the town is modern because of the car. Also in the Gesellschaft community, there is a formal social control such as the authority of a sheriff seen in the film. Another aspect of a Gesellschaft community is the heterogeneous culture or idea and also on a rational will. Members of a Gesellschaft will not base their actions on how it may affect the group but on how it can affect the themselves. An example of the rational will is mentioned when the elders of the village recall their past while living in the town. They recalled the killing and violence how it affected the community therefore they decided to build their own
Community is defined as a group a people living in an area under the same conditions. Realistically, a community is so much more than this definition. It is people and their different beliefs that form a community. In the town of Milagro, Amarante Cordova, Ruby Archuleta, and a town coming together to rescue a fellow community member from jail exemplify the true spirit of what community is.
The emotional thriller, The Village, is about an isolated town that bases their lives around the 19th century, Amish country. The village has highly secured borders and outside the borders “those we don’t speak of” live and it’s an unspoken truce that the other won’t cross the borders. But the town soon turns upside down when Lucious Hunt breaches the borders to find medicine after the death of Edwards’s son. The writers and producers of this movie express symbolism of the fear of the unknown, the loss of innocence, and through the use of colors.
In The Village, I have found that all six of the common patterns of dystopian literature are present. For clarification, dystopia is an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or degraded society. It is the opposite of utopia which is an ideal place or state. The characteristics and patterns of dystopian literature are all shown in this movie. The movie shows, with help from the themes and characters in The Village, a town attempting to appear innocent to nature and humankind but failing. Or an attempt at a utopian society that turns to dystopia. The six themes of dystopian literature are as follows: First, an attempt at perfection. Second, rules and boundaries established to maintain the society’s

A community is the feeling of togetherness felt in a setting with a group of people who share similar characteristics. Living in Scott Hall my freshman year of college, shaped my view of community quickly. Going to organized events, socializing in common areas and interacting with my Resident Advisors gave me an ideal
The first basic issue confronting all societies is to define the nature of the relation between the individual and the group. This dimension is frequently labeled as individualism versus collectivism (Hofstede, 1980, 1991). In cultures at the Conservatism pole of the dimension, Schwartz (1994) noted that the person is viewed as embedded in a collectivity, finding meaning in life largely through social relationships, through identifying with the group and participating in its shared way of life. Schwartz (1999) noted that this value type emphasizes maintenance of the status quo, propriety, and restraint of actions or inclinations that might disrupt the solitary group or the traditional order. Exemplary specific values are social order, respect
Social institutions, like educational and religious groups, enhance rule obedience and contribute to the formation of identity and sense of belonging to certain groups. People possess a set of beliefs that condition their everyday behavior, like one can think that education is the most important four our future, while other people might believe that staying at home and raising their children is their reality. However, our beliefs are influenced by the groups that we interact. For instance, if we join a feminist movement, we might start reflecting a positive attitude towards gender equality. This illustrates how our social interaction can influence or beliefs related to race, and gender. Similarly, religious institutions and
A community is comprised of a group of goal oriented individuals with similar beliefs and expectations. Currently the term is used interchangeably with society, the town one lives in and even religion. A less shallow interpretation suggests that community embodies a lifestyle unique to its members. Similarities within the group establish bonds along with ideals, values, and strength in numbers unknown to an individual. Ideals and values ultimately impose the culture that the constituents abide by. By becoming part of a community, socialization...
At the Group level, individuals share similar characteristics with their counterparts in the same group. Different groups are identified by race, gender, class among others. Individuals within a collective group share similar beliefs, values, social practices, and rules.
Before taking this class, my understanding between each individual and the whole society is that every individuals as the gear are connected together to become a society like a machine. That is, human beings build the society. However, the class gave me bigger view of the relationship between the people and the society. Discussing about the relationship between me and the broader social world is based on how all human beings and the broader social world effect together. Thus, I am going to show my understanding from the class and reading about the interaction between each individual and the whole society.
How would someone define the word community? A community could be anything. If one were to listen to an everyday conservation, the word community, would probably be used very little. The word community has multiple meanings, ranging from communist or socialistic society (Emerson) to the quality of appertaining to or being held by all in common (Oxford).
A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived on a street or in an area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and grow up together, again sharing similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities.
The oldest social law of responsibility to oneself has made a comeback in modern times with a twist. Jean-Jacques Rousseau stated, “The oldest of all societies, and the only natural one, is that of the family; yet children remain tied to their father by nature only so long as they need him for their preservation.” (Rousseau). As of now that twist to be explained has expanded into a preservation bubble more so for the individual than one’s own family. The twist is not a new concept, but it is “Gesellschaft” that becomes the dominant cancer that erodes the very ideal of community.
Everyone has their own perception of an ideal community. For each person the factors of an ideal community will vary depending on their upbringing. My understanding of a community is a place where a group of people live, and socialize. Everyone is caring, thoughtful, and respectful. In my community people take care of each other they think before they act, and are respectful to one another keeping in mind equality.
