Throughout history, Georg Simmel and W.E.B. Du Bois have had a substantial influence on imperative theories and concepts developed in the area of social sciences. Two of the most significant and distinguished concepts fostered by both of these theorists are the concepts of “double consciousness” and “the stranger”. In this essay, I will be analyzing each of these works to draw upon differences and similarities concerning the two. The resemblances I will be expanding on are the usage of the paradoxical figure, which both theorists discuss in their theories, and the coexisting sensation of division from conventional society. The contrast between the two theories in which I will be exploring is the perception that conventional society holds on these paradoxical figures. In Simmel works of the stranger, is seen as a beneficial addition to our society. But on the other hand, in Du Bois work of the seventh son is viewed more as a liability on society. The idea of double consciousness was first conceptualized by W.E.B. Du Bois. In his writing “The Souls of Black Folk” Du Bois reflects on the subjective consequences of being black in America. On the concept, Du Bois says: “After the Egyptian and Indian, the Greek and Roman, the Teuton and Mongolian, the Negro is a sort of seventh son, born with a veil, and gifted with second-sight in this American world,--a world which yields him no true self-consciousness, but only lets him see himself through the revelation of the other world. It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One ever feels his twoness,--an America... ... middle of paper ... ...y. The stranger helps build a society, where the seventh son, or African American, is seen to devalue or hinder a society (Du Bois, 10; Simmel, 149). The influence that the behaviors of groups have is one of the most important factors that help shape and contribute to a functional society. With their works, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois and Georg Simmel use their theories to further examine many of the social issues that are still present in society today, such as inequalities. Simmel and Du Bois both discuss issues such as the feeling of a lack of belongingness felt by outsiders within a society where they may be tolerated, but not fully accepted. What Du Bois and Simmel do not share, however, is the idea of a level of appreciation. Perhaps the issue is deeper than just that of a stranger and a seventh son, but rather an issue of race or historical background.

Du Bois argues in this quote that “basic racial difference between human beings and had suffered not change,” meaning that racism is still a pressing issue. From slavery being legal, to its abolishment and the Civil Rights Movement, to where we are now in today’s integrated society, it would seem only obvious that this country has made big steps in the adoption of African Americans into American society. However, writers W.E.B. Du Bois and James Baldwin who have lived and documented in between this timeline of events bringing different perspectives to the surface. Du Bois first introduced an idea that Baldwin would later expand, but both authors’ works provide insight to the underlying problem: even though the law has made African Americans equal, the people still have not.
Chapter four talks about the differing views between Du Bois and Washington regarding African American advancement. Though a black man himself, Washington valued practices which ultimately kept African Americans oppressed, whereas Du Bois valued equality. Chapter five details the way in which Park contributed to the concealment of Du Bois’ importance and distinguishes that the reason for this power stems from Park’s racial privilege. In chapters six and seven, Morris explores the relationship between Du Bois and Weber. He shows how Weber took Du Bois seriously and was influenced by him. Morris exemplifies this by telling how Weber requested several publications, such as the one addressing race-to-caste relationships. Requesting these publications reflects Weber’s true feelings; that he trusts and respects Du Bois as a serious sociologist. Their collaboration is an example of a counterhegemonic intellectual network, which Morris explains to be a result of systematic racial exclusion and failure to be recognized (Morris, 2015, p. 187). In the concluding chapter 8, Morris makes his own contribution to sociology by creating a way in which scholars could critically analyze the concepts, evaluations, and contributions of intellectuals, especially those marginalized, to ensure they are not erased from

After slavery ended, many hoped for a changed America. However, this was not so easy, as slavery left an undeniable mark on the country. One problem ended, but new problems arose as blacks and whites put up “color lines” which led to interior identity struggles. These struggles perpetuated inequality further and led W. E. B. Du Bois to believe that the only way to lift “the Veil” would be through continuing to fight not only for freedom, but for liberty - for all. Others offered different proposals on societal race roles, but all recognized that “double consciousness” of both the individual and the nation was a problem that desperately needed to be solved.

In The Soul of Black Folk, W.E.B. Du Bois talks about the struggles that the African Americans faced in the twentieth century. Du Bois mentions the conflict that concepts such as the “double consciousness” (or duality), “the veil” and the “color-line” posed for Black Americans.
